Button; Smith, Walker, Caulker, Bale; Townsend, Sandro, Livermore, Rose; Giovanni; Obika.

Subs: Jannson, Butcher, Parrett, Bostock, Mason, M'Poku, Kane.

All except Kane have senior experience, in most cases at Championship level or above.

I know it is a tradition on her to compare the present squad to those of the past and with the benefit of hindsight and a lack of foresight, to say how much stronger we are now, but I am struggling to think of a time when we had so many genuine contenders.

However the fact that of our current starting line-up only Bale is under 21 does emphasise how hard it is for young players to break through. It will be fascinating to see who in a couple of years time has made the cut.

I agree. Very exciting. And all the more so when you look at the calibre of the experience that they will all be learning from. Think what a better player Livermore can be training alongside Modders and Wilson, Same goes for Caulker and Walker from Ledders and Billy G and Rose, Andros T-bag and Gio from Rafa. Terrific.

I'll resist the temptation to suggest that Rose would be better at left back with Bale in front of him as otherwise we might be here some time...

Perhaps, but they do not really play the same position, Kane is an attacking midfield player, not a striker.

The thought had occurred to me. Rose likes to get stuck in and lacks exceptional pace, so I could easily see him ending up at left back. As for Bale...

It's probably a drawback of having such a large squad.

I'm not 100% sure what position he is actually, quite a difficult one to call

He's too good a footballer to play as a centre forward, and doesn't have searing pace, but he's bloody handy in front of goal, and has good strength and physical presence

I'd imagine he'll end up as a Van der Vaart type
