I was actually there when that happened. I was waiting outside the Palace end waiting for my Palace mates to make their way out. I did chuckle but can see why some would consider it offensive. He seemed to take it in good spirit and there were a few Koreans around after the game.

For what its worth there were a lot of Koreans at the game with Son shirts it looks a really good bit of marketing by the club! (And he's a great playing acquisition)

If you were on holiday and attended a big league match in South Korea, wearing the home shirt with the new star player from Europe's name on your back, would you be offended if they started chanting your name etc??

I was going to say this on the Amnesty thread but damn it I'll say it here.
I think there will be many more incidents like this and some more serious with our supporters and away supporters. I think racism to East Asians and South East Asians is more accepted than racism against black people.

As with the Adebayor song which was racist, there are always those who will see it as harmless fun. I think that it's damaging to the club and it's reputation.

There is a massive difference between the Adebayor Song and this. Celebrating a player with a fan in a Son shirt is hardly racist FFS. If the guy was just walking on the street in no colours and no name on the back I could see the issue. Fact is the they could of just lifted the shirt up on its own and chanted as they were celebrating our goal scoring hero.

Maybe if they'd given him a kicking after a bad performance I could get on board with your opinion but its far from it. As I said I was there and about 20 yards up the street in the Park lane and the fan took in good spirits and was laughing with his mates as he walked past me.

Racism can be very subtle or blatant. Why didn't they pick up a non Asian in a Son shirt and start celebrating instead? There are some people who don't have a problem with calling East Asians chinks just like with some people who sang the Adebayor and this incident they see it as harmless but it has cumulative effect.

Once certain people take an inch they start taking a mile.

Remember when funny things happened that weren't dissected, skewed, distorted and frowned upon?

No, me neither :(

Don't question my memory, humour is subjective, don't get stuck in the past, especially with science and people are free to discuss what they want.

Don't answer your own questions.

Hilarious? Must say your sense of humour is at loggerheads with mine.
Fucking hell, some of you have read too much into the OP. While I thought it was good harmless banter, I was just disagreeing with the OP that it was actually hilarious. Funny yes but not hilarious.

Are people going out of their way to try and get offended by this?

I can't believe I'm reading posts about derogatory language to Asians when all this video was was just some people having some harmless fun with someone they thought looked like Son.

I can't believe it's actually getting twisted in to something it isn't!

Luckily Son has started very well so fans will love him.. but I thought YP Lee always got more pelters than he deserved and nicknames like 'DVD' etc. I felt with Lee there was an innate assumption that Asians couldn't play football as well, maybe not overtly malicious but under the surface. Tbh I also agree with the post regarding 'dog eating' - would anyone dare substitute that with other players for bananas say? I know the connotations behind it are less offensive but I agree it just sits a little wrong for me.

And those complaining everything has to be dissected these days, in the past, 'bantz' wasn't uploaded anywhere and everywhere and left as a historical record. So it is a little unsurprising more people will be exposed to these things and not everyone thinks it is entirely harmless, although I have no doubt it was done without malice.

Did I just go full Amo?

The Ade song and the word chink is clearly meant in a derogatory way and indeed are racist, but how was what they did to this guy racist. There was no hate, no malace, no intent to cause harm, the guy was Asian, he was wearing a Spurs shirt with Son on the back it was seen as fun by the clearly overly joyous Spurs fans in question. Its maybe inappropriate but certainly I don't see it as racist, but hey we dont know as we dont know what the guy in question thought of the whole incident.

Even if the guy in question doesn't think it is racist it doesn't mean that it's not.

For years people argued that the gollywog is not racist, just a cuddly toy for children that isn't doing any harm. It's banned in this country now but in many other countries it is not.

You say that the Adebayor song and chink is racist but there are plenty that would disagree.

Some people use coloured to describe black people in many instances the people saying it don't mean to be racist but it is a racist term.

Every case is different and must be judged on it's merits in all these examples there is a common theme, ignorance and that by and large is what racism is.

There doesn't have to be hate, intent or malace involved by the perps for it to be racist and harmful.

So how was this incident racist?

Would it be racist against white people if an English guy was approached the same way by Koreans after an English player scored for their team in the Korean league?
