What's new

Should we now adopt Spalletti's 4-6-0 strikerless formation?

I think Balague knows more than you M. That said he is a bit of a name dropper, but he knows his stuff-just prefer Graham Hunter viz. La Liga on SS. The presenter is mildly annoying.

He may know more than me as far as La Liga goes, or what goes on behind the scenes. But he certainly doesn't have a clue on how Barca will line up if he thinks Messi will play in the middle most of this season.

He was the best player in the world on the right. Villa has been one of the best La Liga strikers through the middle. Sure they'll switch roles at times, but there is no doubt in my mind as a Barca fan, as someone who watches every single match, that they will largely play in their best positions.

Not to mention that Pedro is as good as a left attacker as he is anywhere else. Also, Iniesta is better on the left than he is on the right (although much better in the middle), and even Adriano is better on the left than the right. So why play Villa there?

It would be like moving Bale to centre forward and Defoe to right wing.

I don't get why people think we need height in our team. Just keep the ball and break teams down. Barca isn't a big team by any means and they are probably the best in the world.

Different League. Although I agree we can play that way in certain games though. But in Spain, they don't have teams like Stoke. Even the lesser teams play along the ground, or play on the counter. In those type of games, especially away from home, we need the added height.

I would go as far to say that Balague is one of the worst journos around and probably doesn't know more than a box of toenail clippings.

Goals from strikers 2009-10

Chelsea 46

Man U 41

Arsenal 19 (or 29 if you count Arshavin as a striker)

Spurs 37

City 50

Liverpool 36

Ours are 'terrible'? I think not.

Forget your stats ss57,look at the four forwards we have if we all put them up for sale how many big clubs in the CL would want to buy them? With the expection of Pav probably none. Are four forwards are alright against midtable premiership clubs but at the top level they clearly don't cut it. We have spent the whole summer chasing Fabiano to play for us in the CL so i leave it to you to judge how good are four forwards are.

Whilst I don't think we have any world class strikers, and everyone is entitles to their opinions I am starting to not respect Dans opinion as it sounds like bollocks 90% of the time

If there's a positive forum and you don't know what to do...

If you need someone to post something negative...

If you can find him (tip...he's off watching videos of Arda Turan)...

It's Dan Ashcroft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though. We got top four last season without Lennon, Modric and Bale playing a large part of the season. Yet, remarkably, we scored goals in that time. This suggests that our strikers can't really be that bad can they?

And with those three all playing, plus the addition of Van der Vaart I don't think we'll struggle for goals.

Yes our strikeforce could be upgraded but to say they're 'dreadful' is ridiculous and I suspect an attempt to exaggerate the situation as you often do.

I think the biggest problem our strikers have had is the link between them and the midfield - something that VDV should address. We have become a bit too reliant on width and although we are blessed in that aspect we are a bit too reliant on knocking it in from wide. VDV may allow us to play it into feet and through the middle a bit more which is something all our strikers could benefit from but particularly JD and Pav. JD is as lethal as anyone when the ball is being tapped about on the edge of the box, an inch of space and he can turn and score.

Look who's missed the point entirely.

Our strikers have been scoring 35-40 goals a season between them since 2004-2005. In my book, that makes them collectively pretty decent, not 'terrible'. We don't have a 'world class' striker (whatever that is), but what we do have is four who are all capable of getting comfortably into double figures.

Fabiano was cup-tied for the CL.

Look who's talking rubbish:roll: i expect better from a senoir statesman from this forum!

1.Peter Crouch has only got into double figures twice since 2004-2005! And he is our first choice CF!

2. A world class striker is a Torres or a villa or even Fabiano. If you can't tell the difference between an average player and a world class player then thank God you are not a spurs scout!

3. Whether Fabiano was cup tied or not we still wanted him because he is miles better than what we currently have. None of our forwards have scored 20gls in a season which is what world class strikers do therefore with the exception of Pav on a good day they can't cut it at the top level e.g CL or games against the other big clubs.

Please reply to my message for more footballing education.:hello:

To be fair, he didn't say we do have a world class player. Just that they're all decent.

At the end of the day, it's the team that scores goals. We fell short of that at times last season. I'm confident that Bale will score a number of goals this season, and VDV will too. Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea get a lot of goals from Fabregas, Gerrard and Lampard. None of our midfielders have been close to scoring as many goals as those. I believe we have that now.

The 4-6-0 formation is interesting. UNfortunately the OP tried to get his view over by going way too far when trying to back it up. Say what you want about our strikers but their clearly not dreadful.

Everton played well with it last season and sometimes when Utd play 4-5-1 with Rooney up front it is basically without an out and out striker.

We played 4-4-2 successfully last season for large parts of the season but it wasn't a strict 4-4-2, sometimes it change into a 3-5-2 and other formations and I think it was Steve earlier who wrote about the fluidity of teams nowadays so different formations are certainly possible.

I'm just not sure we should change our entire system right now. We've got a lot of important games and a lot of pressure to succeed in different competitions.

I think if anything the articles highlight that its not necessary for us to sign the traditional target man type striker to have a successful team. We could just as easily bring in a "playmaker forward" like Forlan to play the lone striker role and do well.

We will always have the option of putting the ball high into the box against teams that sit deep with a Crouch and we will also be able to put it in behind the defence against teams that push high up with Defoe and Lennon.

Thats what Ive takenfrom the OP. To say our strikers are dreadful is incorrect and to say they are of world class ability is equally incorrect. I would say Defoe, Crouch and Pav are all of Continental class (if there is such a thing)

Possibly a right back and a centre forward away from being a title winning team?

Centre forward, yes. Right back though? I can't imagine there is a right back better suited to linking up on the right wing anywhere near as well as Corluka does with Lennon. I don't think we can improve on Corluka for that reason.

Also we currently have about 412 right backs on our books so I'm not sure there are any left to buy.
