Should we now adopt Spalletti's 4-6-0 strikerless formation?

You know this is SpursCommunity not the tactics section on a Football Manager forum yeah?

We don't have a dreadful set of forwards at all, true it is probably the weakest part of our team but they are more than capable, and all offer different qualities that we will need to call upon this season.

The article is interesting, and we are definitely seeing a shift in how the top teams set up on the pitch, but the key issue here is fluidity, and it doesn't matter where you write players down on paper because if they are dynamic and fluid then you create problems for teams. That's what we lacked against Wigan because we were Modric-less, but VDV is another player that should be cut out for the modern game and will enhance the way in which we play.

No strikers or 3 strikers, it's about fluidity and dynamism, and we're getting there step by step.

Good post SS18, pretty much the same conclusions as in the other thread on how to break down teams at WHL, it all comes down to fluidity, intelligence and movement. If you have that in the front 6 the formation is pretty irrelevant.

Did you forget that Crouch scored a hat-trick against Young Boys?

I honestly think our forwards will do well in Europe because a lot of teams won't have come up against them before. I know that seems odd because the players we'll be up against will be of the highest quality, but Premier League teams have seen Crouch and Defoe in particular every week for the last 5, 6, 7 years?

Sure, teams in the CL will do their research but someone like Crouch is pretty unique and I genuinely think he will cause some teams problems in the CL. Why do you think Crouch has such a good goalscoring record for England? I think it's because teams aren't used to playing against a 6'7" striker and I think that will be important to us this year.

my memory isn't that bad, yeh he scored two and a spot kick all thanks to Bale

its not as though he is a regular goal scorer

I am disappointed we didn't get a striker because we desperately need better than what we have to take us to a higher level imo.

As mush as I love Harry I think he had the blinkers on in this window, it was Fab or no one and we got no one. I bet I know what he will focus on in January, especially if we manage to get second in our CL group.

I posted this way before this thread in ITK today. Maybe you can see what I was getting at now that he's made it so apparent.

VDV is shit. I'd much rather we would have chased after Nemanja Milisavljević from SC Vaslui. Bigger upside and can play in a 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 3-2-3-2, 3-1-3-3 and a 4-1-1-1-2-1

barca play with 1 striker, good shape, i like it and they are quality, we have very good players also, i would like to see more intelligent play, like palacios winning and passing the ball short to hudd or mod, just like the davids/ronald partnership a few years ago.
rather than prescribing to the idea of no forwards i would jut like to see some sensible intelligent play from our lot.
i cite the 5-0 drubbing of roma preseason a few years ago, there was some awesome footy between dos santos, modric and lennon in that game.

I'd be happy with that formation if we were playing an oompah loompah select
Seriously, Defoe as a lone striker??

In response to Dan's original post, dreadful isn't quite the adjective I'd have chosen, but agree with the basic sentiment

I could see a 4-6-0 working but not on a consistent basis unless other teams adopted the same formation.

It's interesting that Tottenham had 19 different goalscorers last season and a squad like that with goals in all departments should do very well at 4-6-0

How about a 4-5-1 with Gio as the false nine?

zonalmarking cream themselves over false nines.

I think there are two different types of 'lone striker'. Teams that are set up to play defensively and counterattack. They need the big brute who holds up play when they hoof it up to him and then can either go on and score or bring his attacking mids into play. Adebayor, Drogba, etc.

But if you plan to mostly on the attack - i.e. play possesion 'barca' style which Harry has been so impressed by then you just need an instinctive goal scorer to be poaching in and around the 6 yard box, making runs beyond the defence for your playmakers to put you in. Defoe and Pav can both do this. A midfield of

Lennon/Bentley/Gio (RW)
Huddlestone/Modric/Jenas/VdV? (Playmaker)
Sandro/Wilson/Huddlestone (Destroyer)
Modric/VdV/Kranky/Gio (AM)
Bale/Modric/VdV/Kranky (LW)

Should surely provide either with enough chances to score - and probably score themselves. Even Crouch would work if the AM and the wingers were really pushing foward. As a defence the threat would be coming from everywhere which is bound to mean space in the box is created.

Defoe - flat track bully who is only good for a 10 game spell once every two years.

Crouch - very poor hold up player considering his size and who ruins our play (not his fault but he does).

Keane - a great player once, but who has been unable to adapt to his loss of pace.

Pav - best of a bad lot but again poor hold up play for his size and inconsistent.

They are such a disappointment compared to our amazing midfield and defence and all need upgrading upon urgently. Maybe not dreadful, but mediocre none the less.

Dear oh dear ...
i guess almost every other team has better forwards ?
I think you have a case of - never-sasisfied-itus.
You should get that looked at , before it seeps into your love life!

Yeah, the same Crouch that just scored a hat trick in his first CL game for us...

Whilst I'm a little dissappointed we didn't get a new 'striker', I'm happy with 3 of the 4 we have. I expect keane will go on loan, as I really cannot see him happy to pla a bit part. But you are forgetting Gio, who had a pretty impressive world cup playing up front.

He still could do a job, provided he is given a chance.

We have enough trouble keeping 4 strikers happy when we keep 2 on the bench. God knows how we're to keep 4 strikers happy if they're all on the bench

I'm not totally adverse to this idea, but suggesting our forwards are crap is a bit harsh. I'd be tempted to try something like

----------------Gomes-----------------
Corluka----Gallas-------King-----BAE/Bale
---------Hudd-------Modric------------
Lennon-----Gio--------Pav------Bale/Niko

With Instructins to press up in defence and in attack leave 1 by the centre circle and the 2 WBs to press up to beyond the halfway line. The front 6 should not stand still by keep swapping positions and drifting off defenders to open the defense.
