These are human beings, for a cup final to be tense and cagey is to be expected more often than not, the heat might lead to it being played at a slightly slower pace, but you cant use excuses. Last night was very disappointing and we froze on the big stage unfortunately.

I've given my take in a couple of threads already, but the opening moments of the game are for me extremely disappointing and just not what teams who win things do. They must have talked about starting the game well, being switched on, winning your first few duels and laying a marker etc etc. But what we got was like five players consecutively making a little error/second best for their first action and it ends up in our penalty area and then a handball. Sport is often separated by the finest margins, you've got to be at it from the first whistle. You've got to better than that, I don't see that happening to other teams. And we need to get a grip on it in future and set some better standards.

After that the game settled into a pattern that lasted for basically the whole 90 minutes. Liverpool, though I'm not sure Klopp wanted them to, decided to sit on this 1-0 lead and preserve it. Formed a medium-low block in their half and played ultra-cautiously, often just clearing their lines and hitting the ball long for us to start again. We had plenty of possession, but often in deep areas and ended up going nowhere and very rarely building any impetus to our play.

Both tactically and individually there just seemed to be a lack of ideas and clarity as to what we were trying to do. Our back four and centre mid's were often deep recycling the ball trying to play out, whilst our attackers were high up field half hidden in amongst their defence, and so the play was very disjointed. Our attackers were all usually very narrow too, you could have thrown a blanket on them, and didn't work hard enough to find space. You cant always just look for the long diagonal over the top.....

And it went on and on and on. And on. And on. Attackers largely stumbled around and wasted it if the play did reach the final third. We had a few half openings but no glorious chances. And all the while you just waited for us to find a bit of spark and have a go, but it didn't really happen.

Eventually they killed the game. Didn't think we defended this one particularly well either. Had about three attempts to clear the ball, Dier's header is rubbish, Vertonghen looked like he bottled it a bit, Origi has so much space, good finish but still - opportunity was there to clear the ball.

There are ways to lose, that wasn't a great way. I'm sure the players will be disappointed and have regrets. Well its up to them to learn and regroup next season. We've got to get better.

Lloris - Did ok, but I look at the likes of Allison and Ederson etc. and remember he used to play like that and command anything within 30 yards of his goal...

Trippier - Switched off a little in minute one, which did open the door for Mane, but apart from that had a solid game.

Alderweireld - Very solid performance.

Vertonghen - Didn't always look comfortable but did alright.

Rose - Was also pretty solid. Gave away the corner pretty needlessly but seemed fairly clear he didn't get a call.

Sissoko - Thought he had a fairly bad game. Penalty decision seemed to affect him and he never settled down and just went ultra safe in everything he did.

Winks - Did ok. Nothing spectacular but no way he should have been sacrificed compared to what others were doing.

Eriksen - Probably the most competent of our attacking quartet, but that isn't saying much.

Alli/Son/Kane - Bar the most sporadic of moments, a total let down.

Subs:
Moura - Had a couple of involvements but didn't really offer much.

Dier - Ok.

Llorente - Won a couple of headers.

You keep saying he wasn't match fit but he played the whole game and Moura was used along with Son Kane and even Llorente at on point. I
Sissoko flagged out Winks and Alli struggled so to Eriksen. Blaming Kane is the new thing, either way he started or came on as a substitute people will still find a way to blame his fitness
I'm sorry but I'm struggling to find the logic in your argument. Just because Kane was on the pitch for 90 mins does not equate to him being match fit.

Again, at what point have I blamed Harry Kane, I haven't. I am simply saying that it was the wrong decision to select Kane from the start, that is not blaming the player himself. The manager makes the decision to select the players to start, and on that point that responsibility is on Poch's head not Kane's. Poch made the wrong call on that one in my humble opinion. I have also repeatedly said that it's not that he didn't have a place in any part of the game,I'm simply saying that the start of the match was not that point. Where the stakes are high, it would have been worth introducing Kane on 60 mins if the original selection hadn't paid dividends and we were looking at options from the bench to get back into the game. Hoddle was pretty much saying the same thing before the game, and at the time Hoddle made the statement in the days leading up to the game I agree with what he said.

Lloris 7 Did ok but ffs get it up the pitch when we are a goal down with 10min left. We wasted more time than Liverpool.
Trippier 6 Not his worst game but didnt cross it qhen he could/should have and I'm pissed off with seeing the ball go wide for someone to shoot in acres of space and our fbs are on the fking penalty spot!
Toby & Verts 6 Played well but too much sideways passing between the 2. They must have had more possesion than anyone else on the pitch.
Rose 8 I hope to christ he stays. Our best player. Should have had a freekick late on. Shit decision from Ref.
Winks 7 Played really well. Surprised he was taken off.
Sissoko 5 Played well but that brain fart, however unintentional and ridiculous a decision it was, cost us dearly.
Eriksen 5 Poor
Dele 5 Poor
Son 6 Had a few chances but didnt take them. Wasnt at his best either.
Kane 5 Didnt offer much but to be fair wasnt given much to work with.

Moura 7 Should have started.

You know what you do have a valid point and may be I was wrong everyone I’ve spoken to knowledgeable Spurs and non Spurs supporters and very single one has said we should not have started Harry Kane ie he wasn’t fit and that Moura got us to the final. Personally I would of started all three up front and played 433. Anyway it’s all done and dusted we lost so let’s move on.

Gave it to Winks (7+)
busy and competent.
No idea why he was taken off.
Rose(7) good again despite silly mistakes.
Trippier (5) so wasteful when well placed.
Dele, Son, Harry K, out of touch and form.
Eriksen (6+) the only other contender but couldn't find THE pass.
Toby and Vert OK (6) but they didn't press us.
Lloris didn't do much (6) because he didn't have much to do.
Sissoko (5+) Recovered after initial error but din't achieve much

Venue too hot and very concrete. Good views though and its own metro
Police well hard but fans pretty well behaved.
20 second penalty: you know what they used to call that.
(Begins with an S and ends with a y.)

Contentious penalty at the best of times but 20 seconds in the CL Final.
Can't say the ref. bottled it.

Poor game. too much at stake and too hot.
Should have equalised long before they got the second.
Madrid lovely as always. Metro fast and cheap and clean.
Enjoyed the experience if not the game and the result.

Let's not panic

Eriksen hid. Dele was off colour.

Andre Pirlo said that neither wanted the ball. Funny that and he should know. Thats what my mates and I thought as well watching the game.

How many semi finals etc has the Dane gone missing in? I think we need new blood. Someone with cojones and not limp as lettuce.
