Rose???? You must be having a laugh. He was dreadful. Not only for their goal but he was all over the place. Christ. We’re we watching the same game?

Eriksen MOTM - he changes how we play and dictates where his own teammates go to play our best football..

Have to give it to Eriksen. Not for a spectacular performance, but for being the well needed catalyst when it looked hopeless.

Lloris - Nothing to do. Not too much he could have done on the goal in all honesty.

KWP - 7.5 - Very solid and full of energy.
Toby - 7 - Good, maybe could have been more ambitious in the passing.
Sanchez - 5.5 - Had good moments but also a bit at fault on the goal and in a large chunk of Villa's offensive actions.
Rose - 6 - Always an outlet and had so many touches, but very suspect defensively at times today.

Winks - 7 - Solid, but this wasn't the game to go 3 CMs.
Sissoko - 5.5 - Better when he went out wide, feel like we're trying to carve out a role for him right now and haven't found it yet. We know he's capable of more, also a bit of a culprit of the formation today.
Ndombele - 7.5 - Beast. He's a cheat code.

Lamela - 5.5 - See Sissoko...less involvement but probably more important involvements. Like Sissoko, looked a bit lost first half.
Lucas - 4 - Didn't really offer anything, don't think that Poch really defined his role in the 2h, looked a bit lost and not involved at all.
Kane - 8 - Got the job done.

Eriksen - 7 - Changed the game, but I would say it was 1/3 him and 2/3 just switching the formation. Should probably be starting though.N
N'Koudou / Skipp - Not enough time, but deep down I kind of hope both get some regular playing time this year. I still think there is a player in GKN (good preseason too), and Skipp is exciting in regards to having another Winks-esque player come through.

Poch - 4 - Love the fella but the whole "completely set up incorrectly in the 1st half and have to fix it at HT" spiel is just going to cost us so many points this season. Don't get how it happens so often.

Feel a lot of the poor performances today from the players were more culprits of Poch's setup, as I mentioned.

? He was skin-tight with a second runner, he couldnt run with McGinn as well. CMs and Toby nowhere to be seen.

You are complaining that Rose didn't do a better job storming in from LB and defending the right CB position for their goal?

ffs we don;t need a scapegoat

Ndombele my MOTM.

While he looked a little nervous in the first half, he still seemed to be the player most likely to open things up for us. That chipped ball to Kane was one of many times he came up with a pass that the villa midfield/back line didn't see coming.

Second half, specifically after Eriksen came on, he was a class above every other player on the pitch (apart from Eriksen). He's special.

Honorable mentions to KWP Kane and Eriksen

Ndombele came to life when Eriksen came on, needs to play with a quality no 10. Eriksen changed the game KWP was tidy.

I’ve watched the match in the dying hours of my honeymoon on the most broken, hard to follow feed imaginable for most of it, so if anything I type seems completely bizarre (as opposed to my usual moderate banality), that’s why.

Lloris: little to do, goal not his fault.

KWP: MOTM, he was quick and intelligent offensively, linking well and and playing some clever passes, generally good in transitions and defensively he dealt with everything very comfortably.

Alderweireld: ok, again barely tested. Not at fault for the goal.

Sanchez: likewise not tested really, perhaps could’ve been better on the goal but I think that’s be harsh considering he was marking their centre forward who would’ve been free to receive a pass had he been left.

Rose: good showing overall, lots of commitment and energy but also skill, and hit a few good balls too. Like Sanchez, not completely blameless on the goal but a slip is unlucky more than poor.

Winks: very good defensively, win whatever he needed to and showed robustness. Offensively he was quick and clever with his passing, albeit unspectacular, but his job is to be aware, decisive and intelligent with his ball use and he was all of those things.

Ndombele: lots of skill and imagination, sometimes tried passes that just weren’t on but so refreshing to see a central midfield want to create. Slight deflection on the goal but a lovely hit and we deserved something to go our way. I feel he’d prefer being on the right rather than the left. On the negative side, he watched rather than tracked back a lot, particularly first half, which I imagine Pochettino will be addressing in training.

Sissoko: improves as the game went on, particularly after we took the lead and he then did brilliantly to drive on and lay off for Harry’s second, and of course all the usual grit and endeavour. On the negative side, he seemed back to his old self in terms of poor decisions (especially high up the pitch) and his delivery in promising situations, especially from our wide, was dreadful. Additionally, he lost McGinn for the Villa goal and so early in the match that’s just not on.

Lamela: dispossessed Grealish for the winner, played the pass of the match to an offside Kane, and was both industrious and willing as you’d expect. However, he also ran into blind alleys a lot and never really created (though against a 10 man defence and with no width in the side, it’s not ALL his fault).

Lucas: not overly involved any point, anything he tried didn’t come off and he wasted a great opportunity with his head which should have been buried. Once again, I’ll allow him the caveat of being in the wrong position and the formation contesting our space. As a lone striker, great, freedom to go where he wants. On the right, great, he stretches the game and equally he ends up ghosting unmarked into dangerous positions centrally (basically all his goals for us). Down the middle as one of two he just gets eaten by the opposition centre backs.

Kane: not involved, looked rusty even with a wasted chance with his head and a mishit when offside, hold up play was hit and miss and while he played the odd nice pass when dropping deep, too few and far between. However, one opportunity presents himself after defensive confusion, he thinks and moves fastest, we win the game. Then he gets space for the first time all match, albeit from outside the area, and he passes into the net as if there was no goalkeeper. That’s why he’s a world class striker,

Eriksen: he played with purpose and zip, hopefully he was trying to impress Pochettino rather than Zidane. Also allowed us to move to 4231, shock horror- we started turning dominance into penetration and won the game.

Nkoudou/ Skipp - NET

The first half was mike AVBs worst; slow, unimaginative, lots of play in the wrong areas. The second half improved, but not overly until Eriksen entered the match and we switched formation. The diamond can only work if the fullbacks are supported by the central midfielders, defensively and offensively, otherwise the number ten is left with barely any options to create anything, the fullbacks are left exposed and the deep midfielder has a very congested pitch to aim for. As long as I can remember, without width, creativity is stifled. Lo Celso might be the answer, but I suspect that even on his correct foot he’ll be inclined to attack through the middle. 4231 or 433 for me, this diamond just leaves us predictable (and thank fuck Pochettino remedied it early enough to impact the game).

Soooo did you watch the game. The ball was played centrally and not dealt with by Sanchez. Rose stormed over from the left to help out and slipped.

Let's not turn on our players.. Especially the 1st game and after a win. Great fightback by the TEAM.

Overall: 6 - very poor defending for their goal and poor first half all round which we have a habit of doing. Great comeback and win in the end.

Lloris 6 nothing much to do

KWP 7 did very well, much prefer him to Trippier. He’s waited 3 seasons for a chance and I’d say he’s taking it. If he starts vs city let’s see how he does vs Sterling! Not many bigger tests than that!

Toby 7 solid as usual / always

Sanchez 6 did ok but bit at fault for their goal

Rose 7 love him

Winks 6 not his best game

Ndombele 7 for a home debut 1st season very impressive and good goal

Sissoko 6 not bad

Lamela 6 so so, expect a bit more from him in that position though

Kane 8 got the job done

Lucas 6 worked hard
Subs:
Eriksen 8 changed/won us the game
Others too little time

Poch 6 - does the diamond work, do we need more time with it? At end of the day we got the win and 2nd half played some lovely stuff.

Kane MOTM for me. Great to see our best player looking sharp in August. Even the two crosses he swung in from the right were our two best.

A few other thoughts:

1. V interesting to me that Poch took Winks off, rather than Sissoko or Ndombele, even though he (Winks) was playing well. Suggests he maybe sees those as the midfield 2 when we revert to 3 behind HK. Lot of power in that combo.

2. KWP was good, but we know he can be good in games like this. City & Arsenal away will tell us far more about whether he’s up to it.

3. We’re now seeing Jan get same treatment as Eriksen and as Toby has had previously. All 3 with a year to go and clear message from Poch - sign a new contract and you can be fully part of this. (No other explanation for why not on bench - when all of Dier, Skipp and Wanyama are). That’s message until window in Europe closes at least. Don’t be surprised now to see JV transfer rumours either.

Dear Poch, stop playing the diamond. Please practice crossing, and tell our players no one will die if they try and cross first time once in a while, instead of wasting time with three touches. Please practice set pieces, especially corners not hitting the first man or short ones. Please tell our forwards to move more in the final third - it's so bloody obvious we struggle in the final third when everyone is so static.

I don't know why the most obvious of problems, most of which are easy to improve on, for several seasons are being continually ignored by the coaching staff.

I’ve said this before, as have others, but if we keep CE we have one of the best midfield/ attack in Europe.

It would mean every week we’d be able to rotate with absolute quality on the bench (like today) that could come on and really hurt a team in the final third of a game.

KWP was excellent- MOTM for me

This is when the term game changer works having quality players coming off the bench. There are going to be more game changers in games to come whether it be Eriksen, Lo Celso, Ali, Lamela, Son or Ndombele. Last season we would have had an unfit Wanyama or an inexperience Skipp coming on to change the game to no effect. Having a big quality squad results in having a quality bench, resulting in quality game changers coming on.

I think it's down to the athleticism, strength and stamina that they possess (Ndombele less so on stamina just yet) because Villa were tiring we needed more power and energy. As great as Winks can be, he's not someone who will penetrate their defence with a run or create space. Sissoko can do that with his runs and Ndombele is cuter in tight spaces. We couldn't keep trying to dictate from deep, we needed more directness.
