If we're expecting Hojbjerg to be our creative spark next season, then we're fucked

Who said he was going to be our creative spark? You said he does not pass the ball forward, rarely create chances and doesn’t go forward. In the Euros he was second on the assist list, with 3 assists in 6 games. He was always going forward with the ball.

cabinessence:
Nuno has identified him and a select group of others as needing to improve their fitness to another level (or maybe from another level) and they're on a different regime away from the main squad.

Seems like a sensible approach. Let’s hope it works, because if it doesn’t I don’t know that the Premier League will ever work out for him

Im not getting carried away by the Euros. Personally don’t think summer international tournaments are a good gauge when looking at the premier league. The pace and intensity is definitely slower. When Hojbjergs got time he’s a fairly decent passer. Does he have the agility and balance to shift the ball under pressure and get away from people and give himself that in the premier league, not convinced. Last season he was quite sideways and back when we were pressed high up. I don’t think he’s turned into a different player over the summer.

I mean that kind of exactly is what the ITK is saying; that Tanguy and I guess the others we've not yet seen this pre-season are not up to the desired fitness level.

My guess this is also for some based on their position and what Nuno expects from them, hence why all the full backs have not been seen in pre-season ie Régi, Sess, Doherty. Which probably hints at a back four, as he needs them to have the stamina to be constantly supporting the attack

Haha keeping him as far away from the canteen as they can

Improving someone's fitness doesn't necessarily mean that he is in a bad shape. Only means he can do better
Yeah to be generous to him, even if he turned up in the absolute best shape he’s ever been in, we could (probably would) have determined that he needs to improve more. CMs for Nuno will be moving and pressing a lot. Hopefully the new administration’s more modern approach to fitness will help him.

Not surprised that two players who contracted COVID ( Doherty and Ndombele) are having to do some specific work to get their fitness up. We really don't know the long term effects contracting COVID will have on individuals ( whether it will impact VO2 Max and Lung capacity etc )and assuming that Ndombele showed up to pre-season out of shape reads like pure bias to me.

these “fitness issues” are a complete joke. 2years on and it’s still a topic of conversation.

he should be docked his wage until he is in an acceptable physical condition.

I think the issue with Ndombeles absence in pre-season is that he clearly has had issues with fitness before and many are not willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I have to say I agree with them, he clearly has fitness issues and needs to improve dramatically this season, there are 90 minutes in a match not 70.

This fitness conversation will never go away, and that has very little to do with Tanguy’s actual fitness levels.

His detractors love to claim that he is perennially out of shape and overweight. They always fail to take into consideration or just enjoy forgetting that he came from a less intense league. He had some initial injuries his 1st season and then contracted COVID in August 2020 and still, somehow managed to feature for us 46 times and rack up a decent 2800 minutes this past season ( would have probably been 3000 minutes if Mason liked him ). We've seen his numbers and performances improve season after season. It's as if he's adapting and getting to grips with the toughest league in the world. Go figure.

Im not a detractor I think he has the ability to be our best player and probably the best cm in the league. However what I don't understand is the opposite to you people who just wont take any criticism of him. He at times has clearly looked like he is either knackered or cant be bothered I would rather think he is unfit and mourinho's old school dinosaur approach to player fitness hasn't helped that than believe he just cant be arsed. There was a stat from the wolves game 18 months ago where he played a whole half of football without sprinting once. He has to absolutely sort out either his fitness or desire whichever one it is as at the moment he does let games drift by him at times and we all know its absolutely not his talent.... its desire or fitness and tbh both of those should be the minimum expectation for anyone who puts our shirt on.
