As a CB he tends to be too careful and backs off too much, but as an RB he's shown time and time again what an incredible player he could become. I seriously hope we won't loan him out this season, and while Tomiyasu seems promising, the funds towards him could probably go somewhere more pressing this window.

Never understood why people think he’s a CB. He’s a perfect fit at RB. Always looks great there and off at CB.

Kind of thought Nuno’s praise of him was lukewarm on the NBC Sports interview, but that’s probably just my PTSD from Mourinho rearing it’s head. Think we should still get Tomiyasu and let him and Tanganga battle it out and get rid of Doherty and Aurier any way possible.

Nuno seems like a humble and level-headed guy. I don't think we'll see him heap praise on a single player too often in interviews.

Yeah, I think that was even mentioned previously. He’s about the collective, which he then turned the question to how it was a group effort, etc.

Don't know who it was with, but plenty of quotes of Nuno saying he was amazing, and praising his one on one defending

I think it's just a case of not wanting to have the focus on one player, positive or negative.

He has repeated it himself a lot - it's a carbon copy of the Dier situation tbh. Hopefully he listens and invests a bit more in the advice.

I want to hold my hands up and apologise. I said a couple of weeks back that I didn't think he was ready. To be fair I was referring more towards Japhet playing at CB. I still stick to that as I don't feel he will ever be a top Prem CB, but RB is a different story. He won't face much more difficult tasks this season and he was unplayable! If he can carry today's performance forward, we have a seriously good RB on out hands.

Well done Japhet ??
I agree that he’s making the case for playing RB full time but saying he’ll never be a top Prem CB is a bold take considering he’s barely had any chances there… and has been solid when he has.

Japh starring on the right in a back 3 feels very possible to me.

If he was a new signing, we’d all be thrilled on how the future looks with him on the rb slot for seasons to come.

well played Japhet ????

100% same mate I couldn’t really seem him as a CB but my god he was phenomenal today at RB. Some talent!

Instead of having to make these “I’ll hold me hands up!!” posts, how about trying something a little different, like... I dunno, not writing off 22 year olds as soon as possible?

As Gary Neville explained, that was a fucking special performance from Japhet up against Sterling and Grealish at points.

Sigh. He's played ALL his youth football there. We don't think he's a CB he is. He's so good that he can play RB too and has now pocketed Sterling twice in a row

Japh’s the man!!
Not sure why anyone doubting him. He hasn’t played much, but whenever he has he’s been arguably our best player on the pitch.
Yeah I've been impressed from day one. Didn't like how he kept getting played left , right and middle under Jose. Not fair on him imo but he still did ok.
Fantastic tlday.
