So is this the vaunted 4-3-3 everyone's been saying Mase plays?

4231 is the most flexible system in football...however it requires specialist skill sets so like with all systems theres pros and cons.

Any formation can be as flexible as any other if your players have the skill set to do it. As I've been saying for more than a couple of years now, to play 2 in CM they need to be absolute beasts, and we haven't had that. They need to incredibly athletic to cover the ground, very good on the ball to not lose possession, very competent passers and very aware and effective defensively too. Dembele was the prime example and since we lost him we've never had a player with his all round ability. We lost the midfield battle regular as clockwork under Mourinho because we were always outnumbered or outfought and the 'extra' player further forward that a CM2 afforded us was pretty much redundant.

In my opinion, we played our bestfootball under Poch when Dier would drop between Toby and Verts and our fullbacks became wingbacks. That was the prime flexible formation for me.

Life was so much simpler when we all played 442. You knew where you were with that. I honestly couldn't tell you what some of our midfielders/attackers are supposed to be doing, and I am not sure they know either

4-3-3 just doesnt work for us and being honest doesnt work with the personnel we have 4-2-3-1 actually better suit us with the players we have, although having said that it still need the manger to setup it correctly and tactically , unfortunately oohno has been failing with this and formations in general

but it can revert to 2 banks of 4 when defending and end up 442 or 4411. It aint rocket science for the players... surely.

The thing is with any formation that you need buy in and the players to get used to playing with it. I did wonder after the game last Sunday whether actually he would persist because he knows it would take time but perhaps he realises that he doesn't have the personnel.
There has been recent wonderful 4-3-3 like Messi's second Barca side and that great Juve side with Pogo in it and likely endless other examples.

You’ve got your wish, twan! We are now 343/352/3412. Probably best suited to 3 at the back anyway having 7 CB’s
