I'm guessing these are the stats prior to his breakout season with Forest?
Im pretty sure Spurs scouted him when Mourinho was in charge as there were links at the time suggesting a buy and loan back. So he's been on the radar for a while. He had a good first season at Boro under Woodgate but then for some reason didn't get on with Warnock.

What was his potential like? Most youngsters on FM have very low stats that will suddenly bloom if they are played regularly and trained properly.

FM is handy for checking players out but it’s not the be all and end all.

I just checked his potential in the editor. Peak potential 125 and potential ability 145.

One thing I don’t really understand on this player is that @Trix has said he thinks there are better players available to us for the RWB position but (reading between the lines) essentially Spence is the one we are going for because he is homegrown and has the physical attributes for Conte in terms of pace and power.

I get that we need to balance the homegrown issue but I’m not sure I understand why we are looking to do that in WB position and take a punt on a player with 1 years Championship performance behind him and his own club don’t even want when we that role is so critical to how Conte’s system operates. I can only assume Conte is happy with it but I would have thought there were other areas of the squad we could make up the homegrown issue on that were less critical. Maybe I’ve got this all wrong.

Which positions though? We are not after home grown players just to make up the numbers. We want home grown players so we can have a 25 man squad for CL this season with rotation not affecting quality.

Probably CM (we’ve been linked to Maddison and JWP) or even CB (I’d have considered Tarkowski on a free to provide depth at CB). Maybe even Lingard wouldn’t be the worst replacement for Bergwijn or Moura if it is the West Ham version?

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Considering how the club have acted with chasing targets, spending money and generally having a plan, I’d guess Conte is right on board.
You’ve listed names like Tarkowski and Lingard, but they hardly do it either.
RWB, we’ve all struggled for reasonable names from abroad that wouldn’t also be a risk (don’t any twat say Hakimi), so maybe it’s the position where the different between best English and best foreign is smallest.

Great post and completely agree. We have to assume I suppose that Conte sees the puzzle / big picture and that he feels upgrading other areas will make a bigger difference and he must rate Doherty pretty highly.

I agree though, the wing back role is so so key in that system, on one side we have Perisic a world class LWB as well as Sessengon who is getting better and better in that role and is at a fairly good level in that position already, at RWB we have Doherty who is a specialist RWB and was on brilliant form for us before his injury, but surely he’s not Champions League standard RWB. We then have Emerson who is worse than Doherty in that position as it’s not his position and we will likely sell him and then our n.o1 target would as you say be a serious punt on a young kid with 1 good season in the championship.

We’ll take Robertson at Liverpool as a similar example and Bowen at West Ham, if you get it right these guys can explode but it’s a bit of a risk for such a key position.

My view is that whatever people's opinion of his ability the simple fact is that he does what our other two RWB options don't.
He is fast, will go past players will run beyond for the overlap and one two's and will get to the byline and get crosses in, for all their other attributes Doherty and Royal don't do that so I have no doubt why Conte want's him.
As for other targets I don't doubt we've investigated just in case but I don't think we have ever really wanted to give this one up.

If Spence signs I'd hope and expect Conte would bring him through gently. Impact sub to start off with whilst he works on his weaknesses on the training ground (especially his crossing).
I rate Doherty as first choice for now and I can just imagine him getting on the end of some of Peresic's crosses which the Irish man excels at.
