Whilst never a Chimbo hater I am still struggling to understand why we are getting another RB, (unless of course Hutton is either on his way or the injury is more serious than we have been told) when we are crying out for a LB. Could someone intelligent please explain.

I've sort of indicated why in the post above. Ish... :)

Chimbona can also play at CB remember and would also be able to be registered for the UEFA cup, so he could provide us with good cover and lets be honest he's not that bad a RB! Worked quite well with Lennon and can score the odd goal.

where's Jones gonna fit? Defoe has just been brought back so I see him being one of our main strikers & Pavlyuchenko wasn't exactly cheap & he ouzes class imho. Cudicini, I understand & think he will be a good understudy for Gomes. Chimbonda, is a good player, can play across the right, left or center & scores afew goals a season, but he's a mercinary & thats not going to help in a relegation fight. Hunt is probably the best 4 named out of 5 transfer targets, a strong battling left sided midfielder, but I think O'Hara is better than him

Surely can't be true can it... :shifty:

....and if true, why the hell do we want him?? What's next, Andy Sinton

Gunter is better than Chimbonda, FACT.

Plus, Chimbonda's a knob.

Not fact, opinion. Gunter may well have the potential to be better but does not yet have the experience. I still don't understand the Chimbo thing when we have Gunter and Hutton (albeit injured) with Charlie and Zok also able to cover RB, but only BAE and Bale at LB. BAE is doing much better now but Bale is a total disaster which effectively leaves no cover if BAE picks up an injury or another suspension. Just cannot get my head round the priorities here.

There is no way we will get dispensation for both him and Defoe. Zokora can play there. Gunter, Corluka, Hutton is not dead or dying and will be back. We have options. It is not an area that needs strengthening vitally now.

Chances are we will muddle through this season and buy Johnson from Pompey.

Have to say I was a little confused by this when I first heard this especially considering we have Gunter, Corluka and Hutton. Having read the comments of Harry though it starts to make a little more sense. On Gunter:

'He is a good lad and cover for Corluka at RB, but he needs to go out on loan and get regular playing time'

On Corluka:

'He wants to play at centre half'

That seems to suggest that he likes Gunter but that he doesn't think he is ready yet and doesn't want to rush him along. I'd tend to agree, I think Gunter looks an excellent prospect defensively, but going forward he is weak and he just needs to play more. Who knows whether he can play to a good level consistently.

Corluka does well at RB, but is clearly a CB, his defensive positioning and calmness on the ball is far better suited to playing in the centre. He gets beaten too easily at RB and doesn't get up enough.

My take on this Chimbonda move is that Harry really wants to get players who can get about and offer serious pace and power. We are so laboured at times it is quite alarming. Even when we defend well, we can't break on the counter at all, we don't have the runners. We have so little pace and movement. If we are planning to keep Modric and build around him I would get in lots of pace as soon as possible.

What Chimbonda does offer us is a guarenteed extra outlet on the right and he in Lennon can hopefully pose a consistent threat to the opposition. If you look at the full backs Harry had at Portsmouth in Johnson and Belhadj, they were such a threat going forward. Looks likes he wants to create something similar at Spurs and if that is his gameplan then fair enough.

I'm not opposed to having attacking fullbacks and although I would hope for someone better than Chimbonda at this stage we have to take what we can get. We know what to expect.

Chimbo is ok I guess, there were times when he played fantastically well but he still lacks a good final ball and started to defend very poorly towards the end of his spurs career (points to the 4-4 draw with Chelsea where he was arguably at fault for 3 of the goals)

Personally I would have preferred us to go in for Finnan.

I would be delighted if we get Chimbonda back, he's one of the best RB's in this country. Never should've let him go in the first place and signed Alan "I'm always injured" Hutton to replace him.

Do we all just think the grass is greener elsewhere and there are better (available) defenders?
Chimbonda is (it seems) available and can play all across the back line - who else is there that can do that?
We’ve also heard plenty of talk in the media about the time it takes for players to settle in to a new club - surely Chimbonda would settle quicker than most.
Maybe Chimbonda was just like us and thought the grass would be greener in Sunderland?
Personally, I would have probably preferred Finnan but apparently he failed a medical at Hull - or is that just me presuming the grass is greener and an ex Liverpool defender must be better than an ex Spurs defender??
Though it may be sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere.

I'd forgotton that Chimbo played for us a few times at left back. I also can't remember how good he was there, either.

We'll be gettin Chimbonda to play rightback. Forget that he can play left and centre as well, that was half of the problem last time he was here. If he can consistently offer an attacking fullback option from the right like he did when he first came that is what we need. If he plays centre back or left back for us I'll be annoyed.

Chimbonda played well at times at left back, he played there in the carling cup final last year and we won. If we do sign him, he will play at RB, Gunter needs experience and might even get loaned out to Sunderland.

this club is dying. Not in a terminal way, more in a Dr Who way.

Chimbonda is another nail.
