Our relationship with Real Madrid; what's in it for us?

Was there actual any confirmation from anyone at the club of this partnership or is it just from paper talk/ITK's?

There is literally zero benefit for us seemingly, disgusting if we have... It's a glammed up way of calling us their feeder club.

I don't think it has anything to do with player transfers.

They wanted Modric, Modric wanted to go to Madrid. We said no when we didn't like their offer but accepted one when it was as high as we could get. Whether we had a partnership or not I'm certain Modric would have signed for Madrid.

Anyone thinking Madrid won't deal with Arsenal because of our partnership is removed from reality.

We'll train with them, have behind closed doors training matches and let each other use the others' facilities when needed. Maybe get a loan player off them if there was ever a right deal.

Nothing to do with player transfers though considering our partnership I think they should refrain a little from the blatant tapping up they've been doing.

From the OS:

CLUB ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH REAL MADRID AND TRANSFER OF LUKA MODRIC
The Club can announce that it has signed a partnership agreement with Real Madrid FC and reached agreement for the transfer of Luka Modric, subject to medical, to the Spanish club.
The partnership agreement will see the two Clubs working together in respect of players, coaching, best practices and commercial relationships.
Real Madrid FC President, Florentino Perez Rodriguez, said, "The strong relationship and affinity between our two clubs has resulted in the cementing of a longer-term partnership and the successful transfer of Luka Modric. We are delighted to welcome Luka and look forward to working closely with Tottenham in the coming years."
Daniel Levy, Chairman, Tottenham Hotspur, commented, "Luka has been a terrific player for us and, whilst we preferred not to part with him, we are pleased that it is to Real Madrid, a club with which we now look forward to sharing a long and productive partnership."
Luka made 160 appearances for the Club, scoring 17 goals after joining from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008.
We wish him well for the future.

In what context is the word respect used here? They've hardly been respectful in their tapping up of Bale.

Here's what I wrote a few weeks ago when the question arose about this partnership:

Contrary to what fans and the press assume, the partnerships with other clubs are not primarily to do with player transfers. There's never the slightest reference to that from the actual clubs, when one of them is completed. They mainly deal with mutual promotion of the club brand in each other's national markets. There are shared youth development exchanges and mutual charitable endeavours.

As far as I can tell, these partnerships have fuck-all to do with player transfers. But the rest of it doesn't interest the press. Nor the fans. So they judge the partnerships based on criteria that the partnerships do not contain. Makes sense.

Rather sell Modric,Bale etc to them than to Man.U or Chelsea etc so we don't strengthen our rivals whilst weakening ourselves.
And occasionally they will sell us a half-decent slightly injury-prone not needed player on the cheap i.e Van Der Vaart.

The question is what were people expecting from this deal with Real Madrid?

It's obvious that a lot of people expected this to be about players for us, it isn't (although it may be the conduit for a nice deal one day, a la VDV). Of course Real will be sniffing around our best players, this would have been the case anyway with Modric / Bale etc, it says more about us that we have reached a point whereby Real want to be associated with us.

This partnership should be viewed as one where the benefits lie in the exchange of information, training methods, scouting, club building, marketing strategy etc etc etc. It's not about us having first dibs on Benzema or whoever!

What's in it for us? No one can really tell at the moment, we may never know, but I bet we have got something out of it already, and will get something out of it in the future. If not, Levy would pull the plug.

To echo what Shelfside and DM are saying, the fact is we don't know what the deal pertains to, it seems to be more on the commercial side of thing, and the sharing of best practice etc. but how can we really know...? Then it comes down to whatever your expectations are/were... if you thought that this deal was somehow going to mean Real Madrid would nolonger pursue our best players and let rivals have them instead, if you thought it meant they'd suddenly be selling us all their players surplus to requirements at knock-down prices just because it was us, then your going to start threads like this one... but if you'd thought about it for even a minute you'd hae of course realise that it was never going to be about that, and that you'd have to be insane to think that it might be, rather whatever the deal is it must be about stuff unrelated to that except when mutual interests converge, for instance when Real match the best price on offer, we're happy with the price offered then we might chose to sell to them rather than a rival!.

For all the negativity on these 'special relationships' we did manage to get VdV on the cheap and we got a fair fee for Modric IMO - a player who was going to leave to someone, so hey might as well have been Real. I don't have any stats to hand but £33m must be close to a record fee for a premier league non-attacking midfield player.

Even with Inter we managed to get Sandro for a cheap price.

We must be on the front page of Marca more often than Madrid themselves.

Last summer I was in Madrid and a Spurs shirt (modric) was on the front cover of every football and local sports paper every other day.

Doesnt really have any link to the OP....

We got 24 million for Modric not 33 million the rest is add-ons like winning the champions league. The partnership was a face saving measure on Levy's part. We signed VDV before the partnership ever existed. Real Madrid do not believe any of the rules apply to them so the partnership will only benefit them in the long run.
