Our relationship with Real Madrid; what's in it for us?

They took Modric off our hands..

They are now remorselessly tapping up Bale, even to the extent of reportedly keeping the number 11 shirt free for him in anticipation.

We are desperate for a top quality striker, yet it looks as though they're selling Higuain to the Gooners!!!

So, honestly, what's in it for us?

A friendly every couple of years by way of consolation for taking our best players and ensuring we never get to play them for "real" in the CL?

Where's the upside for us, because I can't see one at all.

It gives all Real Madrid staff, people connected to them and ex-players the right to tap up our players.

I'd say it's working pretty well

What makes you think it's related to on-field activities? For all we know, we could be getting plenty of benefits from the partnership. The specific quote was "The partnership agreement will see the two Clubs working together in respect of players, coaching, best practices and commercial relationships." Nothing has happened player wise but nobody is in a position to know whether any of the rest have failed/succeeded.

I agree that there may be more 'off-field' related activity.

But can't help but feel RM are disrespecting any agreement with the Bale speculation

It looks to me like it's kind of like the UK-US "special relationship".

So yeah, we are their bitch, but we get to convince ourselves this is a good thing.

Please do not let reality get in the way of a good old bitch ;)

The whole thing is embarrassing. No idea why they even tried to spin it like this. Nobody is buying it.

We have this thread every month it seems.

It was always going to be more about sharing knowledge on off the field stuff. Maybe youth coaching, where they scout, marketing and brand image etc.

I actually said at the time, repeatedly, that people shouldn't expect this to be us regularly getting Madrid's cast offs. It was always going to be more about the commercial side of things, and having a good relationship with the club so that when there is business to be done any deals may be made easier.

Agree with you and raf18.

The bolded part seemed to have gone ****ybooby very quickly though. Not even a yr. With a club like RM, we'll always be the underling in terms of that side of things.

I just hope we're getting our share of the other stuff. Could our links maybe help get stadium funds from further afield than otherwise?

Frankly, these club partnerships/agreements/understandings or whatever seem like a waste of fucking time to me wrt football operations. Put our own things in place. No need to look over someone else's shoulder, when all they do anyway is to tap up players from clubs we couldn't afford to ourselves anyways.

...and now to make matters worse there are rumours of them gazumping us for Paulinho.

I think a polite reminder to the effect of:

"If you sell Higuain to Arsenal and/ or bid for any of our targets, the closest you will be getting to Bale will be El Classico...and that goes for Sandro, Vertonghen, Lloris etc".

To be fair, selling Higauin to Ar$enal has nothing to do with us. They can sell whoever they want to whatever club they choose - any 'special relationship' mentions anything like that.

Absolutely and we can sell Bale to anyone we like - including Barcelona!

However, if on the other hand, we do in fact have a genuine "special relationship", perhaps it would it make sense for both teams to help each out, insofar as is possible without compromising our own respective goals, and not strengthen one anothers direct rivals.

Before you tell me will sell to the highest bidder, maybe we will, but then we all know that Levy is more than happy to accept lower money from elsewhere if you put his nose out of joint - see Chelsea - Modric.

We all know that the "special relationship" is more to do with commercial gains and coaching methods etc, but Real Madrid's actions regarding Bale can in no context be considered the actions of a "partner".

You forget we also have a special relationship with Internacional and look how well that's worked out with Leandro :)
