I don't think Referees have gotten worse at all. Just decisions are reviewed and analysed so many times than used to be the case. Players cheating and actively trying to con the ref doesn't help.

Also it is a bit cringeworthy when people claim there is a conspiracy against their teams with certain refs and how it is crooked against them.

I agree. The reason we see so many mistakes by refs these days is because we get to see so much football on TV now.

And as for biased refs that would never happen....

I always thought more video replay was the answer. However, I think the officiating as gotten much worse in the NFL because they will so often not make a decision knowing that it can be reviewed.

Also I disagree with the comment on linesman. They're really fucking good. I don't think many people on here could get 50% on the AR test that Premier League refs need to get 95% on.

Got to disagree with this.

My ST at WHL is in the west stand lower, right behind the linesman and most of the linesman I've seen during my 10 years+ of going to the lane are simply not up to the job.

They might score high in tests, but in practice so many of them fail in the basics.

Meh...it's fine.

TV replays would ruin the game, so you have to accept that humans make mistakes and that will apply to refs as much as it applies to players (who I notice the managers never criticise).

If they want to improve the quality of refs then put some more money into it, and also (and this is so simple it's ridiculous) penalise players for surrounding the ref after a decision is made against them. It's pathetic how little the authorities do to protect their refs.

Not for all decisions. Take the Man City v Everton cup semi the other week, Sterling clearly ran the ball out of play before cutting it back for De Bruyne to score, yet none of the officials saw it. In that instance, whatever the outcome the ball went dead - either a goal for Man City or a goal kick for Everton. A TV match official could have watched a replay and corrected the decision before the players returned for the game to kick off again. Of course any introduction would have to be very clear on what decisions can and can't be adjudicated on, but there would definitely be some which could be within slowing the game down.

Technology, especially instant video playback pitch-side is needed. People say it slows the game down but it would be no worse than time-wasting protests from players. I couldn't agree more that there are some truly dreadful decisions and they are ruining the game.
All goals should be reviewed from last phase of play.. it would take the same time as players celebrating.. Coach can challenge a red card once per-game.. the amount of time players argue over it would be no different than time lost arguing with ref.. leave it at that for the really important decisions... wrongly given free-kicks & the such have to be left to the referee.. they have to maintain some authority in the game..

But this is exactly the problem. How far back do you go in a move? And which decisions do you look at? Who makes the decision whether to go back or not?

I reckon a very high proportion of goals have something controversial somewhere in the build up, so at what point do you stop looking for them?

The Sterling example is all well and good, but what if it was the same situation but with a potential offside rather than it going off the pitch? How often do we see that?

I just think that it opens up a huge can of worms as to what you can and can't look at in terms of replays, and eventually it would get ridiculous.

Some more atrocious decisions again this weekend. Mariner today the latest, how does he not even give a free kick let alone a red card for Gabriel's tackle today, when he is 5 yards from the incident. Referees need to be brought to face the cameras at the end of a game to explain their decisions.

How many times this season have we seen teams come to WHL and time waste constantly yet never even get so much as a warning? But Pantilimon gets booked in the first half...

How would that even be possible? FIFA as an organisation is completely and utterly corrupt, frankly I wouldn't be surprised if some mafiso bosses look at them and think, 'I know we're corrupt, but we're no FIFA.'

Ref at Stoke was awful too (Mason?).

Clear penalty not given to Southampton, and Mane's red card was ludicrous.
