I'm not sold on Maddison as captain - but another thing to consider this season with the crackdown on non-captains speaking with the officials - it probably is ideal to have a CM who is likely to be near enough to the play at any point on the pitch to get in the official's ear.

He’s also a great communicator. More than Bissouma or Romero could be.

Has to be a team of leaders

It’s good to know that we have the following players to call upon

club role - someone like son or madders who will be good boys & ambassadors that sponsors and corporates love

pitch role - someone vocal to influence the referees and players but more importantly rallies and gets us going so Yves or Cuti or Lolo (once he’s back)

tactical role - someone who can transfer and translate manager’s plans into action and I’d say Royal or Perisic or Skipp here… watching the pre season live, they seem to be the ones moving others around and getting them into positions

case in point was skippy, who just returned from England duty, and Royal was constantly telling him where to go, and Skipp’s 2 goals at Barca was testimony to him understanding his position finally.

Maddison for me with Bentancur as vice. Son’s form worries me too much to have him as captain but I see the reasons some would choose him.

Surprised so many have suggested Romero. The captain needs to be someone who can keep a cool head - Romero has a lot of qualities but I’m not sure I trust him to stay calm and composed in a fiery encounter. He’d be the one Spurs player I’d now expect to escalate that sort of thing!

If it’s any of the ‘old guard’ barring Son I’ll be quite disappointed.

I don’t think it’ll be Sonny, based on nothing substantial beyond the time Hugo lost his shit at him for not being fully on it… I think it has to be a fluent English speaker for communication with the ref in the heat of the game, and someone well liked. So it’s a short list of Dier, Madders, Biss… and I think Maddison’s new found maturity after becoming a dad of twins has been mentioned a few times, and referencing him being a joy and breath of fresh air, so my 50p bet is going to be in him.

No way can it be Dier. He should be nowhere near the starting 11 let alone captain. The current mood is poor enough post Kane, without compounding the situation by making Dier captain. That would be a real kick in the bollocks.

Hence, Maddison being my guess. I do think it’s a short list though. And Madders is probably the guaranteed starter.

Maddison is a good shout I hadn’t really considered.

I think I still prefer Bissouma though.
Everything about him in the pitch sits right. Position, attitude and general style of play. Without knowing him, the captaincy could even elevate his game if he’s the type who would feel a greater responsibility to lead by example with effort and energy. He certainly can’t go missing in the middle of the park.

what swings it though is how he seems to be integrated across the squad. It Might seem trivial, but Social media of him being a big hit with the Spanish speaking contingent really struck me. It’s very easy for cliques to form in sports teams especially ones with a shared language. But he was right in the middle, singing their Spanish songs. In other content, he’s with different groups.

he just seems to have the strongest character in the squad. reminds me of what Mourinho said about Sissoko and what an important figure he was even if that wasn’t seen from the outside.

it might come down to whether we go with different club captains and team captains. Nobody really wants to be the club captain and Not team captain though.

I'm just going to point out Roy Keane was the most successful captain in Man United history as far as trophies is concerned. 9 major honours under his leadership.

Fair point, and similar could be said of Vieira at them lot. But I think there were several other leaders in that group even when Keane was first given the armband - they’d won the double the year before he was made captain - which possibly diluted the significance and risk of him being captain on the field. In our case we’re all struggling to see a single outstanding candidate, so I’d be more cautious about giving it to the player most likely to miss a few games through suspension.

If Bentancur was fit and ready to go tomorrow I’d choose him. However I think it could be what Son needs to spruce some more energy into his performances

Considering that Ange likes to sub his wingers and forwards out quite a lot, I don’t see the point of it being Son. I would think it will be Bissouma, but I can see a case for Maddison, and a captains band does look good on a #10 shirt. Plus, he’s English, start of a new era etc. could happen. Having said all that, it’ll be Son.

Maybe that’s what he needs. If he has the captain’s badge it might lessen his irrational tackles and make him stay in his feet.

I said above I think it will be Maddison but would love it to be Romero. 'step up lad. You're the man now.'

They have released a post from Ange on the main website, saying how impressed he is with Maddison. From what I can tell, it’s just what he said in the press conference yesterday. So seems an odd thing to post. Right before the away kit unveil too. Maybe it’s a hint at our new captain and direction?

I think the fact that the club has yet to name the new captain & do promotion around it just another misstep in a whole line of them. It lets the sour taste & infuriated anger toward them linger. It’s been 6 hours. What are you doing? Granted the anger isnt going to go away soon but like at least release something to give the fans something to be a little cheery over? Deathly afraid to promote the new kit on socials so they quietly release it. And now just letting this anger foment more.

Looking at the official website, there is an article with Ange praising Maddison so my guess is it will be him.

Also if you watching the training video why do all the players have a plaster on their right arm
