Hopefully it helps Romero calm down a bit too with the added responsibility of being a leader in the group.
I am guessing this was in Ange's thoughts - put a little responsibility in someone and it tends to tone down the recklessness.

But, aside from that - Romero has been a guy on the pitch since he got here that has tried to make things happen, and get the team moving - exactly what you want out of a leader. He is going to love the attacking philosophy of Ange.

Love Son so really happy with this.
So impressed with how Madders speaks since he came in, and Romero properly needs the responsibility he’s the senior def of the club now, he’s needs to step up this season.

Feels like a good balanced decision. I like that we might have official vice-captains named. Some outside shouts on here for Romero to be captain, and naming him as an official vc feels like good forward planning.

Not sure Ange has put a foot wrong really since he started. Dread to think what the past few weeks could have been like with some of our other recent managers...

An actual sensible decision from the club?

Wildlife gif. A white owl turns his head to look straight at us and has an expression of pure shock. Its eyes are wide and its mouth is open as if gasping.

Made up for him.

Need to sort the elephant in the room out though. Lloris.

Surely you’d think announcement of Son as captain would come after the news of Hugo going? Such a weird situation.
I do wonder if Lloris would stay on as non playing staff, but the lack of anything to suggest this makes me think that whatever happened at Newcastle is not easily forgotten.

Fair play, wasn't my first choice but far from the worst choice we could have made. Hope he thrives under the pressure and gets back to form.

One part of this that concerns me is the “& club” reference. Surely the decision should be that of the manager and the manager alone. Intimates meddling from above in football matters.

I’m not against the decision at all, just very strange that it’s mentioned.

We all knew he was leaving before the tour. He just hasn't found a new club yet.

What if lloris doesn't move until after the game tomorrow? How would we announce Son as captain then 😂

Hope so does well as captain, not my first pick but hopefully he's more vocal on the pitch now.

Yup, Son was probably the right decision, but we don't have many natural leaders at the club.

I imagine Son would have been the boards choice as well. Marketing opportunity and all that

Romero and Maddison interesting choices.

I wouldn’t read much into it - probably just the case that Ange makes the club aware of his decision to make sure that they’re happy with Son as the senior club representative among the players and them approving is something of a formality. Like when a new Prime Minister gets permission from the King to form a government after an election.

Just my take on it.

I’m happy for Son. He’s a lovely bloke who cares for the club and he’s also a top professional. If he can get his form back then he’s also a world class player.

but, and I may be old fashioned, I don’t see him as a captain.

then again, we don’t have much leadership in our squad at the moment. So good luck to him and I hope he does us proud.

Romero’s a surprise to me.

Delighted neither Davies nor Dier got the VC roles. Shows we’re actually looking to the future.

Omission of Hojbjerg presumably suggests he’s leaving.
