Next Captain?

Son for me.

He is fire when he feels responsibility for the team and performance.

Besides having to find the next captain, who I think will be Son, we also need to find the next penalty taker!

I did not expect such a gap in penalties scored but after Kane, we have Richy, Son and Maddison as the most likely candidates to take over penalty duty.

Penalties scored all competitions.

Kane - 64
Richy - 7
Son - 7
Maddison - 6

I like Son, a lot. Heart and soul guy.
But I don’t think he’s robust enough to be captain.
There is a fragility with his confidence at times, which would only be exasperated if we should go on a run of defeats.
I think his captaincy would impact his performances and his performances impact his captaincy.
Great for when things are going well, and terrible for when things aren’t going well.
I think he judges himself too harshly…and if he’s missing opportunities in front of goal, I think his captaincy would suffer too.

Just my point of view.

I expect it to be Son, but he wouldn’t be my pick. I love the fella but he’s not the obvious leader type and his place in the team shouldn’t be assured of his form doesn’t return.

If it weren’t for the injury I’d go with Bentancur, but looking beyond Bentancur my pick would probably be Maddison. He speaks quite well, embodies the style of play Ange wants and is the sort of character I can imagine thriving on that responsibility.

If it’s Dier then I’ll be annoyed, underwhelmed and confused - I don’t expect Dier to start much for us under Ange.

Son needs to get his form back. Doesn't need the extra burden or responsibility of Captaincy imo. Wouldn't mind him being club captain, but not matchday.

I would love that, would be a bold statement from Ange, but I just have this feeling it's going to be given to Son.

I think @Trix mafe a point earlier that rang true. I hadn't appreciated prior to his arrival how articulate, confident and sharp Maddison is with his communication skills. Very impressive young man and given that he will be a key cog to ange's machine this would make sense to me. But there are another 2-3 candidates too I suppose such as Cuti, Son and perhaps Lolo.

Ange has talked, as most managers do, about wanting leaders on the field whoever they are. About young players being leaders even in the presser today. And multiple lieutenants.

I can't see past Son as club captain, because he has done more than earned it in terms of performance and the respect that he very clearly has within the squad. He's now the major face of the club worldwide, and that counts for something as a club captain. I'd look for Son to be the captain for the next couple of years, and appoint 4-5 vice captains in whatever order. Bissouma, Bentancur, Maddison, Skipp, Dier.
