Based on that scouting video that person is kramer.

Wouldn't mind losing out on Schneiderlin if we could get Kramer. Also like Xhaka at Borussia MG. Think we should be stoking a few other fires rather than wait to see if Schneiderlin's preferred options fall through. Maybe it's all paper talk anyway.

Other than the fact MS has played for Poch I really don't see what all the fuss is about so actually I don't think it should be that hard to find someone at least as good.

I understand what your saying but MS is already attuned to the PL and other equally good players may take half the season to get used to the speed and intensity,

I understand but sadly we don't have the luxury of paying up for PL proven players. We need to take risks and buy abroad. Hopefully Mitchell allows us to get more Modrics and fewer Paulinhos.

The funny thing is that it seems like Koeman thinks Clasie will be an adequate replacement for MS but we don't seem to have any interest. I'm not saying we should buy Clasie but just pointing out that there are better value alternatives out there. All will be riskier but risk is a 2 way street, it can deliver us somewhere better just as it can someone worse. Mitchell's job is to skew the odds in our favour.

In terms of alternatives to MS, I hope we take a look at Krychowiak from Sevilla. He is not quite as good as MS technically but boy can he defend and he has a buyout clause of around £20m if i'm not mistaken.

The thing that was so appealing about MS was he should be able to slot in pretty easily.

Already acclimatised to the league and has performed well for the manager previously. I don't think there are any other obtainable players available in his position at his quality.

The only other Prem player at the level we need I can think of is Alex Song. He'll be much cheaper but not sure we're looking at him.

Delph is too similar a level to Mason and Bentaleb for me. Guess we'll have to hope Stambouli has a big improvement in his 2nd season.

What about illarramendi from Madrid? Exercise our special relationship. The fee of £15 odd million Liverpool are supposedly trying to sign him for we should be all over it

A lot of talk about how we should have bought him last year, but didn't offer enough etc etc

Ever occurred to you that Soton might have thought him the hardest to replace out of all the players bid for (even Lallana)?

they obviously had to sell to get some cash in (I don't know the ins and outs) and they recruited well, but if MS had come to us that could have left the sort of hole in the squad that gets you in trouble

or it just could have been Levy being a tight bald little f**cker.

It's just the great unknown isn't it?

We had a new manager and many feel he should have been fully backed. With the new TV deals many clubs were spending higher than they normally would.

We spent around £13m on Fazio and Stambouli who some felt were not good enough and we might have been better off buying one player the manager really wants than 2 who are OK.

Would Southampton have sold? I'm sure they would for the right price but was that price £20m, £30m etc we just don't know.

Now we have seen Poch is happier playing hungry young talent over the midrange talent we have there is an argument that we should bid higher for our number one target rather than making several signings each summer in the hope that one comes off.

I feel it's time for the scattergun approach to end but if Schneiderlein was gettable last summer I just don't know. My feeling is if Utd want him and are willing to pay £25m then we are unlikely to get him.

For the record, and can we please stop this now, never said that Schneiderlin would join AFC. Only that he preferred that option. But also..

Philippe Auclair @PhilippeAuclair

...that difficulties between his representatives and AFC were making a transfer unlikely at the moment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Been following this guy on twitter for a while and whilst I won't pretend he is ITK he seems a genuine journo/sports writer..

I fucking hope to god that we've got backup when we don't get him, I honestly think that centre mid is the most pressing need as far as getting a leader in there, don't really have much faith in mason as I think he's a limited player, someone like Kramer but even that seems like a fucking fairytale to be honest!!

Correct. We won't be signing any new players in the DM position.

This just your opinion or have you heard something?
I've developed an algorithm that transposes our track record of transfer dealings on any given transfer rumour/desperate need to strengthen in a position/strengthen the first team/demonstrate some sort of coherent approach to recruitment /support the coaching staff etc. It's surprising how similar the results are every transfer window...

He is a guest on Guardian Football Weekly now and then. Seems like a respectable guy to me.
