He wanted to go, nothing we could do about it, like Berbatov if rumours are to be believed.

Berbatov is a class act, and replacing him like for like, will be hard. But we can find another goalscorer, all we need to do is find a creative midfielder to supply the assists.

Carrick, was a different kettle of fish.

Or, Comolli persuaded Levy that he had a better player than Carrick lined up, and it was therefore OK to turn down his request for a pay rise to bring him into line with King and Keane and flog him for a stonking profit.

Carrick went to a Champions league club and his limitations where shown up IMO because of a greater expectation. He personally hasn't progressed internationally (although he has domestic medals) and players such has G Barry effectively playing at a level of football below him have gone onto progress.

The point is - going up a level can make or break a player and IMO I don't think Carrick has become a better player at United whereas Vidic has.

Presumably this explains why he got a standing ovation from the OT crowd when he came off last week, and also why he's made more appearances and spent more time on the pitch than any other United CM. Have you actually watched any United games lately?

Thank you.

Carrick is possibly the most under-rated midfielder this country possesses. Take Fat Frank out and put Carrick in the centre with Gerrard for England to see a 100% improvement in distribution and ball retention.

According to one front page poster Carrick is only a squad player for united and a poor one at that and he the front to claim that I am one who struggles to understand things that a 5 year old would find easy.

But that's kind of the point, he is. He is Top 4 and we are not. If we had spent wisely in the last close season and kicked on and mounted a Top 4 challenge we could probably have kept him. In the event this season has been an embarrassing shambles, and winning the League Cup has not wiped that out. Footballers have short careers and he is not going to hang around indefinitely waiting for the club to come up to his standard.

We will not be able to replace him, and I am afraid we will not be better a side without him, even if we do get a pot load of money to spend from the sale; Carrick demonstrated that. It is the players of real quality who are the difference between the Top 4 and the chasing pack. The squad players at united or Arsenal are no better than at Spurs, perhaps worse. But they have enough genuine stars to lift them to another level. We have Berbatov, and if he is fit, King. Even Keane and Woodgate are arguably no more than very good squad players. Lose Berbatov and mediocrity beckons.

Good points as normal, Eddie.

But we were a better 'team' before Berbatov arrived, with our first fifth placed finish and have failed to replicate a top-4 push since.
I would be gutted if he left, but it wouldn't be the end of the world . . . and we might not find a player as skillful, but we could find a more-hard working and less tempremental player that ends up scoring just as many, and contributing just as much to the team.

I don't think we'll miss Berbatov as much as Carrick. We need a good midfield to make the team tick, so let's use the sale money to really strengthen the midfield, Keane and Bent up front, and find another lesser known striker as number 3.
We might even be challenging for fifth spot again!

If the situation is going to be compared to Carrick surely the point should be how the money is used to replace Berbs. With regards to the former it has to be admitted zokora wasn't of the same standard and we suffered as a result. And lets remember in MJs first season when he took over from Santini his points per game total would have had us in 4th if he had been in charge the whole season. And none of us had ever even heard of Berbatov then

I think he will go abroad simply due to the fact that a Euro team is more likely to meet the asking price - Man utd are unlikely to spend £30m on him but a foriegn team would as players from England currently represent good value for money for foreign teams due to current exchange rate.

I'd be sorry to see him leave as he's a great player and a 'Tottenham' player but he's also an inconsistent one. I've seen too many games where he has had no influence at all & it seems that if the team are not playing well neither will he. When he's good he's outstanding but that doesnt happen every week & if we get big money for him we could use it to buy a midfield & become a much better team. That said i'd still rather see him stay!

He seems to me to be the one thing that is currently disrupting all that is good at Spurs at the moment and he plain and simple needs to go. I'm even getting to a point where I don't really like the bloke anymore. As a player he has his moments but is starting to become extremely over rates in my eyes. 40m or Berbatov? No decision even to be made. I could argue that our results are maybe even more consistent than his performances.

And all this talk of him being a WHL legend? Does he look like he has ever loved this club like Ginola did? If we're not legends to him then he will never be to us. And to the people who say he's better than us, he's not, he might be better than our league position but he's never as good as THFC.

A sympathetic part of me wants to say 'but if he stays next year blah, blah, blah my feelings might change', but that'd be untrue. The way he has acted on the pitch lately and the way his agent is conducting himself through the media makes me think we'd just be better off without him period.

And it's fecking horrible feeling this way about our most talented player. :-|

Let him go. It is not healthy for the team.

Wouldn't you all prefer someone that actually wants to play for the team?

I know I would!

I have no idea why i am about to say this but maybe Berabtov leaving could be good?!?!

latley the team seems to be getting more and mroe like Berabtov, Lennon and Keane being prime exapmles of when things go wrong they throw there arms in the air and striop instead of going back after the ball (though they did this anyway it just seems liek they are doing it more because Berbatov seems to get away with it). Now i am not saying Berabtov going is the best of moves, as he is clearly our best player and has goten us out of scrapes in the past to win or get back into games! but i was just thinking if we atchaly had 11 players who worked as a team and worked for the ball, would we be as bad off as we are now? yes we wouldnt have the flair Berabtov gives us (when he tries) but we would have a team that would be working together and not looking to 1 man to turn the magic on, might be a kick up the arse some players need to start doing what they need to do isntead of hoping Berabatov does it!

Hope he stays and we get a midfield that will create something and a defence that wont stand of players and do stupid mistakes!

Yid-Ol you may be right. Especially as Juande has made a point of saying in recent interviews that its about the team and not any one individual

I think he has been bringing down the team for months now (not entirely his fault) for whatever reason (agent, media etc.) he has had what Henry had every year for about 4 years with Barca, condensed into about 6 months.

lets face it if you getting asked "are you leaving?" every day for nearly 18 months years, it's going to cross your mind.

i think it will be better for the team if he leaves (abroad) we cannot let him have half a season in spain/italy and come back to england (cluases and/or sell on %'age should stop that)

If juande wants Berba-esque striker they are around; Vucinic  but unlikely, Ibrahimovic (as before) Santa Cruz?

or we could go for one of the Sevilla boys or Kenwyne Jones, just hope it is all done before pre-season starts, and IF berba has made his (agent's) desire clear, we should not play him for the rest of the season and invest these games in seeing what Bent/Pekhart can offer us next season.

am i boffered (slightly yes but I'll live )

Berbatov is not bigger than the club. I do concede his better than the players surrounding him at the moment. When he leaves for a champions league club IMO he'll become just an average player just like Carrick.

The opposite might happen: with better players around him he will get more space and really show case his talent and prove he's a world class player on the biggest stage, i.e. the CL.

Assuming the dragon1 ITK is true:

The bottom line is that losing Berba is losing our best (fully fit) player, and the heartbeat of the team as most of our play goes through him. In this sense, the loss of Berba is very similar to the loss of Carrick.

The mistake Jol made after we lost Carrick was to try to play the same system with a far inferior passer of the ball (Zokora cannot dictate the tempo of a game in the way Carrick does).
The only upside I can see of losing Berba is that Ramos is a bold enough coach to make radical changes to our formation if he deems it necessary to compete at the top of the EPL and in Europe.

So, if, by August, we don't have a Berba (or Kanoute) creative fulcrum type player, then it wouldn't surprize me to see Ramos switch to a 4-2-3-1: two holding CMs, two attacking wide midfielders and a creative ACM behind a lone striker.

I also think Ramos' recent comments about our needing to sign top players are probably a warning shot to the board that if we sell Berba, we need to sign several players of that quality if we are to become a Top Four/CL club. In other words, the board need to match Ramos' ambition.

Look at this point, whatever. Go. He's not bigger than the club and that's a boatload of dosh. Yes, it will be virtually impossible to replace him. But that doesn't mean we can't be a better team without him.

So let him go and take this circus that has become his staying/going with him. It's distracting.

I think people definitely need to realize that CL is as valuable as cups. CL is what the great players want and we have to get that to keep them. Hopefully then having those players will make cups a regular occurrence.

My sentiments exactly.

Let him go if he wants to go. Just make sure we get the right price for him. Players come and go. If I was him I would probably leave.
