If you could have one back...

Who would you take back now?

Non-see you next Tuesday Modric for me. Made us tick. Could last the full 90, too!

I <3 Rafa still though. Hate Luka. Little rat-faced ****!!!!!!

It's a bit like asking - "What would you rather have - £33M or £10M?"

Even given the current needs of the team it is clear that we miss Modric more than we miss VDV. With Ade unavailable for most of our season and the Defoe + VDV combination never really working then it is only fair to consider them as midfielders (replacing Huddlestone/Siggy/Dempsey in our current line up). Much as I loved Rafa that's a no brainer really.

Luka for me.

With Rafa, he could change a game in an instant with a piece of brilliance, but with Luka, the game didnt need changed because we were already in control.

Transer fees mean nothing.

Andy Carroll (£35m) or Andrea Pirlo (£0)?

VDV for me....Dembele being out of the side has made Modric's departure even more noticeable lately.

However, VDV playing off Adebayor in our current set up would of been fucking orgasmic. I think we are tougher away from home with that base of Sandro and Dembele, we've just lacked that guile and threat in the final third for two big reasons so far this season:

1) Adebayor has been out
2) VDV - his intelligence and ability in this area of the pitch combining with Adebayor is what we've truly been missing IMO

Don't get me wrong we have missed Modric and his ability to dictate games for us, particularly at home but we have Dembele now and although he's not a like for like per se, he makes us a more complete side IMO. There were plenty of games away from home we looked piss weak and Modric in midfield was a part of that, I think Dembele's more balanced set of attributes between attack and defence has/is going to serve us very well, providing we have the front end of the team functioning properly, which we havn't yet - so its VDV all day long for me albeit he's a bit older etc.

This side would of been great IMO:

Lloris

Walker
Kaboul
Vertonghen
Ekotto

Sandro
Dembele

Lennon
VDV
Bale

Adebayor

Is it?

And how many times was the Defoe/VdV combination given a chance to work?

See Mr Pink's post below, it's a 'nail on the head' scenario.

i went for Vdv he loved the club, and think he only left for 2 reasons 1, his wife and where she works, and 2, AVB's reputation with falling out with older players.

Modric only played because he had no choice, as we wouldnt sell him previous season. had we forced him to stay 1 more season his preformances would of dropped alittle again.

now if i could have a player back of any choice it would be a Gasgoinge or Hoddle. since they left we have never had a player that had an influence and real skill, and deliver a threat continuosly on free kicks in dangerous positions.

Rafa without a doubt. Absolute class, goals and assists and workrate. We have players who can play the Modric role to a lesser effect but we have nobody who can even get close to Rafa.

just as a matter of interest who currently do we have that you believe can play the Modric role?

I think we missed Modric last season let alone this season, in some games he didnt turn and VDV constantly was dropping deep to pin balls about to get things going

There's some missing context, as in would we be getting a happy Modric or an unhappy one, and it's a bit subjective depending on that and Rafa's personal situation.

But, having considered all the permutations and possibilities, it's Rafa every time. The better, more complete footballer who offers more assists, more goals and more passion.

"To a lesser effect" you mean...? Mousa Dembele. But I think he has areas where he is stronger than Modric was, but weaker in others. Tom Carroll can play it to a MUCH lesser effect, but he has time on his side.

I'm taking the cash and the 5% sell-on fee.

Personally, I wouldn't have either of them back. They've gone, it's over and we should get over it.
