That’s just madness. And it would never work.
How are you defining "work" here?

I think all three parties want this deal to happen. I think Bayern really want Kane, I think Kane wants Bayern, and I think Levy, reluctantly, wants to sell.

Everyone has something to lose in this deal if it never happens. So, if you put pressure on Bayern - perhaps they find a few more pounds, or maybe Kane agrees to a lower contract to facilitate the deal, or maybe Levy agrees to put more money in the add-ons instead of the guarantees.

But, Spurs have a vested interest in concluding this deal - one way or the other. This deal impacts the transfer budget, and we need to be getting our deals done - before selling teams tell us its too late to make deals.

If you set a deadline you are prepared to walk away from the money. The plus side, you get to prepare for the season properly with a world class player and you have less teams Fucking you about in future.

We will never be prepared to walk away from the money. We will always compromise the football side before the money side, and you end up in situations like this 2 weeks before the start of the season.
I think for smaller transfers we would happily walk away and have done.

I'm not sure we can afford to do that for Kane, much as I sympathise with your general view of the way our club is run, that I feel I would probably solidly agree with!

Could we have afforded to walk away from the Bale or Berbatov deals at the time?

Of course this is about the money. You think anybody would bugger about when there’s possibly £100m up for grabs now or zero in 12 months?

I bet you he'll spend money (not as much as we'd like, but some) once he knows how much he has to spend.

It's infuriating, we miss player opportunities who get snapped up elsewhere, we lose our preseason prep, and we often end up with third or fourth choices if we get anyone at all...all while undermining a succession of managers...but the reason it doesn't improve is exactly because he's not trolling...he thinks he's doing the right thing.

That's why it's time for him to go. Not because he's evil, but because he's wrong.

Bayern will have their own deadline - they need a striker, and will need to move on to plan B, if Kane is a no-go.

So, its not dragging out to deadline day.

Its in everyone's best interest to either agree to a deal - tomorrow (at least the parameters of a deal) - or everyone goes their own way.

Bayern probably don't want to lose Kane. Levy probably does not want to lose the ability to sell Kane. And, Kane probably want the ability to move on now. (And, I am sure Ange would like to get on with the business of preparing the players who will be here).

I don’t disagree with the broad strokes of your post. But the idea that this would be wrapped up quickly is for the birds. As you yourself have now highlighted, there are lots of things that could be negotiated - all of which take time.

Must all come down to how badly you want to succeed and how prepared you are to loosing some money.

If you think you can take the money and build yourself a better team, then set a deadline with a realistic price. Gives you a chance to get the players in with some preseason.

If you don’t want to sell said player, put a price on it that you would be stupid to turn down.

This obviously can’t happen every time for every transfer, but it surely can stop some of this messing about for weeks with pathetic offers, designed to destabilise the club.

Would like to have known how BM would have reacted if we said £100m by the start of our preseason or no deal.

I know many people will be disappointed when Kane leaves, but this has had an air of inevitability about it all summer.

Given that - it's better to just get this over with, and move forward. Letting it linger just makes things worse.

Onward and upward.

But not this situation, which has a pretty unique set of variables.
There's no unique set of variables.

We own Kane as a player, he's in contract for another year. So it's the choice of the club whether or not he gets sold. Not Kane or his idiot brother.

As others have said, actually say the price you'll accept, set a deadline, it's actually very simple and is done very often.

Instead we've had the constant loop of media "Bayern set to offer another amount Spurs obviously won't accept."

It only benefits the buying team as they will likely end up at the price we ask for only it'll get done 4 weeks later than it should have meaning we have to scamper around last minute to get our shit done.

Absolute circus.

The real question is have Bayern stumped up the necessary readies or have we capitulated on the fee?

Either way, it would appear we are close to a resolution to this saga.

Love H and I'm so thankful for the service he's given us.

But we're Tottenham Hotspur, not Harry Hotspur - and I'm looking forward to seeing us being moulded into a more well-rounded team.

Onwards and upwards!
