As far as I know, Veloso is a DM--never seen him play as a CB, but others would know better than I. I think its redundant to buy him and Diarra--why not just buy an actual CB and Veloso? (I doubt Diarra--either of them--would come).

Got to keep Gil, he's on the other side of his career, so to speak, but he's still got some quality. In terms of Zoko, Juande clearly rates him--plays him everywhere and in nearly every match.

Same as most: desperately need a defensive midfield anchor who will go straight into the starting 11 to add some steel to a fairly lightweight if skillful midfield. Need centre-back cover as I'm not convinced King will be regularly fit. We conceded a lot of goals last season because of these two positions and as yet haven't strengthened. It's the factor that's holding me back getting overly excited about the new season. Aside from that, we need another striker, two if Berbatov goes.

Let's follow other clubs at this point. Liverpool just signed young french striker N'Gog for nothing from PSG.

Lassana Diarra wnas signed from Le Havre for a bargain by our former Director, Frank Arnesen. Diarra is now a France International.

We need to be on the alert, and we do not need to sign players for overprice all the time. Wenger is good at buying young talented players, and it is a shame to see him doing the right things, and we just pay overprice. They even got transfer money when we signed Bentley, and for that amount they got there, Wenger can buy a new future International player. We have to learn, if we are to become a big club playing in the Champions League.

Liverpool payed 20 million pounds for Robbie Keane and Chelsea usually stays well clear of(f?) the bargain bin when shopping for new players. Arsenal is playing a dangerous game and might end up paying for it. To me Ramsey, Bischoff and Nasri is not enough for a squad that thin - looking forward to see if the old geezer makes it.

I am happy that we shelled out the money Rovers wanted for Bentley because we needed someone with his delivery now - today. Not in 3 or 4 years. What you seem to disregard is the fact that we have a recent history of doing what you are talking about, buying prospect. That might even have been the problem at times, Kaboul as Kings stand-in for example. The way we are buying now seems healthier to me, it also allows us to utilize our "hidden" players like Gunter, Bostock, Pekhart and so on... when appropriate without having to rely solely on them.

IMO we don't need a lm, we have Bale, Gio and Modric. Plenty. We need a striker when Berbatov is off (I want Arsjavin, I really do.), we need a 2nd choice keeper and a cb. Shame we didn't get Dunne but someone like him would be cool beans.

The dortmund CM Sahim looked bright in a poor team. Nice flick to release a striker and some good tracking.

I'd like to see us sign Appiah or some real leader on the pitch. We have enough youth. Now we need a little steel and experience.

What we actually need is some dirty b-stardo to back up all our fancy boys. Said player would never step on the field at WHL but would be used on our trips to the cold harsh north. He might not actually get on the field in away games either but would serve pretty much in the same vein as having a big brother you can introduce or threaten to bring round to bash people up. The rarety of said player ever getting time on the field opens up the possible field to few slightly older blokes as well......Trevor Hockey, Terry Yorath, Billy Bremner and Graham Souness all come into the reckoning....virtual representations being used where said player has departed this world.
All jokes aside West Hams Parker could do a job as could Vinny Grella.

We need another CB, the amount of times Huddlestone got caught the wrong side yesterday was scary, he is not a natural CB.

Zokora isn't good enough to play in central midfield but shone for me right back, desperately need that defensive central midfielder. Come on Veloso sign for us, you know it makes sense, don't worry I think Berbatov is staying now.

Hoddle, Waddle, Gascoigne, Ginola, Greaves, McKay, Lineker, Klinsmann, Blanchflower, Jennings and a time machine.

While we're at it, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Puskas and Zidane too.

We need Gattusso.

Is he not living a bit on his past though? He didn't have a very impressive domestic season and went to Euro 2008, with a lot to prove and didn't do it. He looked average throughout the tournament. Players with his aggressive style, often decline earlier, as the way they play the game is more demanding and it takes it's toll.

For me we need another centreback-Thiago Silva, Vincent Kompany would be solid options, but would love us to go for Gonzalo Rodriguez at Villarreal he is a wonderful player.

We definately need a central midfielder with an emphasis on defensive duties. Anatoliy Tmoyschuk and Miguel Veloso are two top class players. I also really rate Julian De Guzman of Deportivo. Doesn't get the attention he should but is an outstanding defensive midfielder. We don't really need him, but I'm not a fan of Jenas, so would love us to get Igor Denisov from Zenit. He is one of the best all round midfielders you are likely to see.

For the left sided option it has to be Diego Capel or an interesting option would be Thiago Neves.

If Berba stays then we are sorted!

If that's what is required, bring the ex-gooner Peter Storey back from the grave. Or Norman "bite yer leg" Hunter.

I want to see more "hidden signings" behind the scenes.... All the top Clubs do this, and we have to do it aswell. What I mean is young players signed for the academy or reserve squad knocking on the door to get a sub appearance. N'Gog is the new "hidden" player Liverpool have signed, and he has already managed to score for the first team. Baros was their hidden player a few years ago. Fabregas was Arsenal's hidden player along with Clichy, Diaby, Eboue, Toure, etc....

We need to learn!!

So what are then Ranieri (from Perugia), Parrett (QPR), Bostock (Crystal P), Butcher (Arse), Jansson (Karlsund), Berchiche (Athletic Bilbao), Dervite (Lille), Mills (Swindon), Rose (Leeds), Pekhart (Slavia Prague) and Olsen (Lynn) just to name some talented youngster who we have signed for our academy or reserves during the last couple of years?

And definitely Bostock, Dervite, Rose and Pekhart are already knocking on the door!

So IMO we are very much doing it already.

When talking about our 1st team squad, I think we still need to sign one CB and ST, especially if Berba leaves.

good, consistent players to play alongside our few players that have outstanding ability, ie Modric, Berbatov, Dos Santos, Woodgate, Gomes. (add Bale & King to that when they're fit)

Either that or we stick with some of the players we have and just try to bring their levels up, ie Lennon, Bent, Bentley, Hutton, JJ, Hudd, (plus a few others) can all improve even further if we just stick with them and allow them time to gel.

In the past 5 years, we havn't stuck with the group of players we had and allow them to gel and imrpove together as a team. I think we were right to dip into the transfer market over those last 5 years, but I'd like to see us soon (maybe next year) go out and only buy 1 or 2 players and just try and stick with what we have. (Though I'm sure there's only about 5% chance of this happening as Tottenham don't do quiet transfer windows!)

Bold statement but I don't think we need anyone for the starting XI unless Berba leaves.

Assuming Berbatov stays all we need is cover for RB, CB and ST, in my opinion.

All this talk about NEEDING a defensive midfielder is wide of the mark. I think JJ will do a great job in the Carrick role this season and we can easily save ourselves £10m+.

Berbatov and Bent should be starting up front if we're playing a 4-4-2. This is Bent's big opportunity and he's taken it so far pre-season, give the lad a chance and just bring in a striker who's happy to sit on the bench and make sub appearances and play in some of the less important games.

As it stands, our side against Boro could well be:

Gomes
Gunter - King - Woodgate - Bale
Lennon - Jenas - Modric - Dos Santos
Berbatov - Bent

Subs: Forecast, Dawson, Huddlestone, Zokora, Bentley
Then two of BAE, Gilberto, Rocha, O'Hara, Taarabt.
With Hutton to come back from injury.

Add to that a RB, CB and ST I think we're alright.

I have been saying myself that the most important position for us to fill is the holding midfielder ala Carrick to play alongside Modric but I have also started to think about what you say here. Maybe Jenas could actually fill that position? Maybe Ramos sees this and isnt looking for a new holding midfielder at all? Well I guess the next few weeks will show us.
