Hello fellow yidsters!

Following on from Harry's latest quotes where he has said we might try and use a diamond formation with Gudjohnsen, I was wondering what our line-up would be to play this formation? Do we have the right players?

Harry said: "We've lost Aaron Lennon

[to injury] so we haven't got a great deal of width. We can play a diamond formation if we want to and he can be a big player in that system."

This?
Gomes

Hutton .... Dawson .... King ....... Bale

Palacios

Thudd .................. Modric

Gudjohnsen

Defoe ..... Crouch

Seems a little too attacking minded if you ask me...

I think you'd be looking at Jenas as opposed to Hudd to provide a bit more pace. That left side with Modric, Bale and Gudjohnsen linking could be killer.

I think you have Thudd and Wilson in the wrong places to be honest.

Don't know why though.

Its a tough one.. I did think of having Jenas in there instead of Huddlestone, but hes just been so off form. If he stards playing like he was towards the end of last season, then yes, Jenas should play instead of Huddlestone in this formation.

I've often thought, and posted in matchday threads, that I'd like to see a diamond formation this season when Lennons been out with:

Gomes
Righty Centre Centre Lefty
Huddlestone
Palacios Modric
Kranjcar
Defoe Crouch

so put in Gudjohnsen, a tall creative type, in for Kranjcar, a tall creative type, and you have something pretty similar.

Obviously with a fit Lennon I wouldn't even dream of considering this.

For what it's worth, I think it's a myth that Corluka isn't attacking enough to play right back in that system, and I think some of his runs the other day were superb. He just doesn't need to do it when Lennon is there.

I dont doubt his ability to attack down the right, but I do doubt his ability to get back to defend a counter-attack.

If that's your concern for him (I don't have that concern, but I understand why you do) then surely we need to just sign someone new, because Hutton has not shown himself particularly adept or disciplined when it comes to getting back into position when he's bombed down the right to no avail. Even against Liverpool, where I thought he had a good game, this was all too abundant when we were pressing late on.

Im still reserving judgment on Hutton though. He's been out for so long and before he came to spurs he was a very very good player. With a regular run in the side i think he could come good. But again, thats just me putting faith in him, and id agree with you that he has been below par for us.

This is mouth watering though :) :

Gomes

Corluka .... Daws ..... King ....... Bale

Palacios .... Thuddle

Kranjcar ... Gudjohnsen .... Modric

Defoe

I worry about suddenly switching to a new system in the middle of a season. And then what happens when Lennon's fit again? Do we switch back? Does Eidur go back to bench-warming duties?

I'd rather Harry picked a system, stuck with it, got the best players in each role and appropriate cover were they to get injured. It was always highly likely that Lennon was going to be unavailable for at least a period. I just wish we had got a more coherent contingency plan in place.

Maybe, seeing as we're likely getting Kaboul back, he meant a diamond defence:

------------Gomes------------
------------Dawson-----------
Corluka------------------Bale
----------Huddlestone-------
---Lennon--Palacios---Modric
--------Crouch---Defoe-----
------------Kaboul----------

I don't like the diamond, it's too narrow imo, even with Bale and Hutton bombing on.

I don't mind it, then again... anything without Jenas appeals to me!!

I'd play a 1-8-1 system as long as he's not part of the team!

i diagree mate,we often critisise harry for being a one trick poney...4-4-2 ,and "hit crouchy "jokes.well he finally shows hes more than that and we pick bones with that.he has realised he cant replace lennon ,so he comes up with a plan b,and thats wrong?he didnt say ,thats it ,we are changing our system to a diamond.hes saying he has that option now.whats wrong with the opposition guessing our system?maybe if we had a plan b earlier, the likes of stoke ,hull and wolves wouldnt have left the lane with points!!i applaud harry.

That's what i expect he is thinking. Based on how he went against Chelsea and Arsenal, with Hudd in the hole and Palacios infield on the left (although with Modric instead of Jenas it would be the other way around). But i really dont like this formation. We have often struggled with this sort of thing. Not only the Arsenal and Chelsea games, but didn't Harry try something similar away to Wigan last season? It seems everytime we change the formation we struggle.

I think now is the time to give Bentley a run in the team. Even though he isn't at the top of his game, and lacks pace. He still gives us natural width on the right, and that allows more space for Huddlestone to string passes together, and Modric to come infield more.

I think he is just saying it is an option. I have my doubts he would start with a diamond formation but he may rather change to it at some point in the match depending on circumstances.

A Diamond formation IMO does not suit Lennon. But it suits our current fit squad.

Didn't we play the diamond formation in the away FA cup tie against Chelsea a few years ago with Lennon at the tip?

From memory they couldn't cope and we really didn't deserve to only draw that game. Probably the point that Jol gave up ever trying to win a game against the top four.

I actually agree....have been saying for a while that we needed a plan B without Lennon. My issue was that it looks like it's all being cobbled together at the last minute. Can be difficult for players to adapt and sometimes pre-season is a better time to experiement.
