you didnt include chimbs in that!!

Or Zokora.

I respect them both for stepping forward when they did but usually shoot outs are over in the 1st 5 penalties and these are the players who usually volunteer to put their arse's on the line.

Agreed with above. It takes a certain mentality to take pens in that tension. I expected both Woody and Steed tostep up. But Benty did - so give him some credit.

Maybe ....just maybe.... if 36000 fans in the stadium get on his side and OFF his back we will see a far more positive Darren Bent who WILL score goals.

Firstlty the following the 5 players showed that they have something about them...

Berbatov
O'Hara
Huddlestone
Bent
Jenas

It takes balls to stick your hand up and step forward to take a penalty in such a situation. Now I'm sure darren Bent isn't stupid and he reads the negativity in the papers about him, he must feel that sections of our support are not that happy with him and he must have known that had he missed he would have been slaughtered. Under those circumstances Bent showed even more balls than the others to step forward for us last night, to me it confirmed his character and increased my respect for him.

As for his performance I thought he done well, he forced Gomes into making 2 decent saves, should have been selfish when he tried to square for Keane and hit a decent 1st time volley a yard wide. To me that points to the fact that Darren Bent offered us a genuine threat on their goal, he also held the ball up pretty well, was willing to run the channels and won a few balls in the air. Overall I think Bent done well last night and we didn't look to be carrying enough threat until he came on.

I do think that he is a little 1 dimensional in his play, however I also believe that we need a player that offers that dimension.

Personally I'm pretty happy with Bent when I think about the injuries, the early season loss of confidence and the fact that he is clearly behind Keane & Berbs in the pecking order.

 Compleatly agree with this
You forget to mention Zokora, a palyer who has never scored for the club, missed a sitter in the CC final, stepping up. That showed balls.

Bent certainly banged in his penalty which was good to see. I still don't think he is the striker we need but am hoping he gets the opportunity between now and the end of the season to play in the side and prove me wrong. And I'm more than happy to be proved wrong if it means we end up with 3 top strikers, scoring goals for fun, so we don't have to go out and spend squillions on a new striker in the summer.

i still cant believe how well zokora took his pen. Probably one of the best pens I have seen in a while. I know we are all wise after the event but i'm sure robbo would have smashed his pen in if he took it instead of chimbonda

I was waiting for Robbo as well, he's probably the best striker of a ball that we have.

No SS57, your smarter than everyone else objectivity fuellled sarcasm does not detract from the glaringly obvious. The guy is pants. Sooner we get rid the better.

Eh?

As soon as the guy gets any sort of string of minutes together, I'll make a proper judgment.

Can anyone tell me what he actually did wrong yesterday?

Or is it that pride swallowing is proving too difficult. Apt that Chimbonda has signed his own transfer out of the club with a pretty appalling performance off the field in the last couple of months, capitalised by a terrible penalty last night. If we're looking for scapegoats, I'd look right and back. But that's a tad harsh - we did win away after all. We just had the curse of the English Team Penalties. Cracking save from Gomes too.

As for Bent - he'll be in the shirt longer than Berbatov will, so I reckon people should get over their attitude towards him for his price-tag - which I expect is all it is.

Over and over again, people mistakenly attribute this to him - when all is said and done, it has fuck all to do with him as a person and player wearing our colours. Get over it.

We've had a lot worse.

:duh::duh::duh:

What game we're you watching Stoof. Chimbo was our main attacking threat down the right flank and run up and down that wing giving it everything for 120 mins. He was, along with Berba, Zoko and Woodgate, our shining light last night. Yes he missed a penalty but that can happen to anyone of any ability and i'm not including that when judging his performance last night.

Question is, does having "a lot worse", make him good enough?

OK. I will concede that on reflection and in light of everyone's comments in this thread, there were some positives in his play last night. However as a striker he needs to be ruthless/arrogant, call it what you will. The attempted square ball to Keane (not the first time he has taken a "safe" option this season) seemed to show that he is somehow playing in awe of his team mates, or maybe even afraid to take on responsibility, which if that is the case then it is wrong.

Fact is, i have yet to see what he brings to the team that makes us better? Ultimately any new signing has to improve your squad and because it either hasn't worked for Bent so far, or because he may be playing within himself or even that he just doesn't have the ability to step up, he is not improving the side when he plays.

Thus far, his movement, hold up play, attacking momentum and link up play has not been that good. Last night was a bit better, but generally he has not been getting into the positions he needs to in order to pose a threat in front of goal. Once he starts to show that he will bring something to the team, he will be supported far far better than he is presently.

At the moment he looks a poor acquisition to the squad in my opinion, and that is why i would prefer a better alternative, which means he would need to be sold.

If that makes me clueless as one apparently wise gentleman called me in this thread, then so be it!

Evolution - I think he is talking about his overall behaviours eg Cup final, trying in Jan to get a transfer out and speaking out in the press.

I think he did ok, could/should have done better with his chance right after the break, and the volley was shinned i think, good header as well.
I think Darren needs a run of games, unfortunatly of course while Berbie and Keane are fit it aint gonna happen.

Ahh Eek

In that respect, fair enough. Chimbo's attitude is poor and you'll get no argument here on that point

I can't believe there are still plenty of people who just think he's crap and want him out immediately. I'm not even gonna bother trying to convince the haters to at least give him more time because in my opinion you're deluded if your mind is already made up about him. It does seem that there are more people at least willing to give him more of a chance now though, which is good.

Sorry, I read that back and thought that would get picked up on. As Northernspurs says, it's been a terrible couple of months for Chimbonda. Whether we believe the press/ITKs or not, the photos of him giving the finger and claims that he wants out make it apt that he is the one fallen from grace.

It's quite clear we have his replacement in Hutton who I believe will prove to be better. I don't honestly see a future at the club for Chimbonda, I really don't.

Question is, does having "a lot worse", make him good enough?

I knew you would pick up on that, which made me question putting it in originally. No, comparison to shit does not make mud, gold.

But it seems that having a better squad means that allowances on judgments of player's abilities have been dramatically shortened. We gave Postiga a season, and most were traumatised to see him go. He scored 2 goals; missed more chances than Andy Cole ever has. Yet he was given the time.

Rebrov given the time too - unfairly hounded out of the club according to some. I just think it was shown that he was the poorer half of a fantastic club and International partnership with Shevchenko. Not that I didn't love the little Ukranian.

My slowly evaporating point is that both of these guys were given the time to show what they can do. And I compare their task to win us over with Bent's. I don't think it helped we paid a steep price for him, because [stereotype alert] a notoriously 'tight' set of fans won't wish to spend their hard-earned on a whim (spending that I'd say 90% of fans previously declared they would love). However, in his injury filled, behind-the-scenes role this season he's demonstrated more than enough to me to say that he's got more than one-dimension that B-C and others trumpet almost daily [which I put down to ShiftAndShootBitterness - Defoe being the most one-dimensional striker we've had in recent times].

So I say lay off him, give him a chance. Let his boots do the talking, not his price-tag.

His holding up play is 20 times Defoe's. His heading ability about the same. He may not be as rapid, but he showed at Boro that he can "shift and shoot" as well as the other little man could. He's shown he can get in the right positions, score with either foot and his head.

I really think some fans want him to fail, just so they can chant and crow that he was a waste of money. Or maybe it's an outside-of-Spurs issue? Maybe it's mates claiming that we've wasted a load of money, and our pride is hurt and is wont to agree with them. But this is speculation.

If you can say that as a third striker he doesn't bring more to the table than Defoe did than I'm shocked because for me, aside from rattling in a few more goals which he will certainly do, he's everything and more.

If it's all the same to you, I'll stick with objectivity-fuelled sarcasm.

Use it while you can, SS57 - the Chancellor's increasing the duty on objectivity by 10p a litre in october.

----------------------------

And Stoof - I thought Chimbonda was godd last night - especially chasing after and retrieving a ball that less-spirited players might have let run out after 80-odd mins, and crossing it for Berba's wonder-volley of a goal.

He's Mr Chimbonda to me. Respect.

Still dont rate him much and deffinatly not worth the money, but thought he did ok last night. Think that goal against west ham has gave him confidence. He is strong, very fast and good in the air. he deffintaly gives ramos an option.

I meant 'good' in the above post - not 'God'.

Although perhaps the typo was freudian.
