I think if people looked at what the duty of a winger, in modern day football is they'd be so much more excited.

Defensively -:

The biggest problem defensively that I saw was our lack of recovery pace when attempting to nullify a counter attack. Our defence usually had to engage the direct, aggressive opposition as players didn't get back fast enough to effectively contain the attack. The quicker you get men behind the ball the easier it is to force the opposition wide and into less dangerous areas.

Offensively -:

Pace offers you variety, it allows you to come deep and receive the ball, attacking the space that others make for you, or it allows you to get into pockets that other just simply cannot. Defenders find it hard to defend fast players usually as they do not have a clue whether to press or to contain. If for example, N'Jie has as bad of a touch as suggested, defenders will aim to press quickly, use him as a decoy and space behind will be created for our full backs to exploit.

Pace is unpredictable, it is the greatest asset you can have in sport.

Us having patience is very unlikely. Look how Bentaleb has been slaughtered after the Man U game.

Yep, it's very frustrating. I've made a promise to myself to try and not moan about any of the youngsters this season at games. They just need our support not groans when a difficult pass doesn't come off etc (you know the ones the crowd make, they really frustrate me).

And too be honest what do the "supporters" think this reaction will do? It does nothing but heighten the nerves and make the player look for the easier pass from then on. It's not just us its football in gereral, players, young ones are going to make errors, the last thing they need is a hostile environment to grow. I remember being at the Lane a good few years ago and the guy behind me done nothing but slabber and shout abuse at Keane, Irish this, Irish that, fuck off back to Ireland etc (I'm Irish so found it amusing). But seriously what is all that about, why pay all that money to go to a game to just sit there and be a ****, I simply don't understand that mentality in "supporters".

Meh we are overpaying for a French version of Townsend. Poor touch, plays with his head down, loses the ball frequently and his finishing is by no means great...all this in a technically inferior league....Aulas is getting his revenge on Levy after the LLoris deal...even the Lyon fans can't believe how much they're getting for him ...and replaced him with Valbuena for a third of the price!

If I am talking just physically, what is?

I mean, if you are talking about pace as in the speed a player runs at (rather than of mind or in decision making for eg) then in my opinion that is not the greatest asset in sport (unless you're an Olympic sprinter..obviously...)

From what I've seen of him he certainly doesn't play with his head down, that's pretty obvious. He seems to be always looking for a pass. His 7 or so assists last season would also confirm that. And FFS Valbuena will be 31 in a month... Do you think that might have something to do with his price?

Like I said his first touch sux... and will give ball away easily, this is what I think he must quickly change. Skills wise.... I thought the Kiev guy is much better.;)
I get that, and I wasn't really being negative towards you personally. But we, collectively, always moan about transfer fees. "Levy doesn't spend enough", "he should just pay what club wants", "we pay too much", "he is so expensive", "net zero", "transfer profit" "$$$", "€€€", "you don't understand how a negotiation works", "We aren't City". We are just never happy no matter what when it comes to correct or incorrect pricing.

Trying to zoom in on a middle ground between all the various opinions about transfer fees, I struggle to see how 10M pounds is too much for a bet on a young player.

the stats in that backpagefootball link further up this page are interesting. His performances don't always match up with the stats, but they do show someone who keeps trying and gets it right eventually. We may have to have patience and overlook the odd mistake, but will be rewarded with moments of brilliance.

Similar to kanoute in that respect, some moments of shambles and others of brilliance.

So you've watched the player loads then and know exactly what he is like. Also valbuena is not even the same type of player but you know good try. Do you write for the Sun perhaps with that kind of insight

You need to reread the player thread again. He got slaughtered by many and his MotM performances from last season were completely forgotten or ignored by them.

Well i believe you but if you read through as well i never gave him shit over it even though it was costly.
Like all young players coming to spurs we welcome and support them.

This guy coming in has obviously been looked at (Mitchell and his magic box?) but he's not going to be the finished article. If he was we wouldn't be able to afford him, that seems to be our catch 22.

He could turn out amazing, or not, or just somewhere in the middle.

I would like to think that we as fans would give him time to develop without demanding instant gratification. I remember when Modric first played I was told by loads of pub experts that he was too small and wouldn't work out in the Prem, that we had wasted a big chunk of money again etc etc.

most of them were Spurs fans
