No. As optimistic as I am and as much as I'd love it, we simply can't. Maybe in a couple of years we'll be contenders, but I don't think there's any chance we'll win it this year.

Lets not develop delusions of grandure just yet.

CL qualification is a difficult enough target to attain in itself, one that is likely to be beyond our reach this season, if we did finish in the top four that would be a remarkable season.

The fact that only 3 teams have won the league title since Blackburn (and the you'd have to go beyond the premierleagues conception to find another aside them) is testiment to how difficult it is to win the league.

I really hope we dont get too carried away by good results in pre season games, they mean nothing and I would happily lose them all if it meant getting all 3 points up at Middlesbourgh (as in I would trade all pre season games for that)

I just dont want another scenerio where Spurs fans are calling for the bosses head everytime we lose and suggesting we will win the CL after every victory.

We are (hopefully) progressivly getting better and if we get off to a good start we could go on to have a similar season to that we had with Carrick and Davids (only hopefully this time with a better ending) We do have a better squad now (although this is pending the resoultion of Berbatov/replacement situation and not to mention that most teams in the league have also strengthend dramactically)

Im sorry if this post was meant as some joke and my post seems retarded (I have not actually read a single post in this thread) but I feel to express my feelings regarding the mood swings of Spurs fans.
AngerManagement's concerns are well founded. Not sure how much rope the same fans that talk up the expectations will give Ramos before trying to string him up for not achieving the high expectations. Judging by his management CV, Ramos doesn't appear to be the type to hang around in the face of abuse

Any chance of bringing back your old signature. Used to love that lopezian threadmill.

I'm not sure about that. Last year they mostly did a very good job, but so far this summer I don't feel too threatened by their transfer activity. There was a poll on quite a big football forum where 47% (admittedly of 23 people) said they thought we'd done best in the transfer market so far. Also we have Bale, Assou Ekotto and King who may be 'like new signings' for us having hardly played last year.

Everton have done nothing, and Moyes apparently said this:
“We can’t hide the fact that we need new players. Everybody knows it. We have to get five or six players in before the season starts.” When asked if he could see any imminent movement in the transfer market - Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Moutinho tops the wanted list - Moyes replied: “Not at the moment, no. We are in a poor, poor situation regarding going forward.”

At Arsenal, noone's sure whether Nasri will improve on Hleb's performance last year, and they have a hole at DM where Flamini, Diarra and Gilberto Silva used to be. I don't see any way to realistically say they've pulled away from us further, but they are the scum, therefore ramsey is worrying.

Blackeye have effectively replaced Friedel and Bentley with Robinson and Villanueva, neither of which is a definite upgrade.

Villa forums have threads called things like: 'Who (else) is beginning to panic,' 'Other fans have noticed MON's weakness' and 'Frustration.' Which threads contain sentiments like: "our squad if anything is even smaller than how it finished last season, its a disgrace, call me negative..." and "Why has no RB been brought in? Why don't we have a first team RM? (i know we have Routledge but..."

Citeh have only signed Jo and Ben Haim. Although Jo is a great player, so is Modric, and if those two cancel each other out then the tally reads: Ben Haim vs Dos Santos, Gomes, Bentley and Bostock.

So there's five rivals who we've made up a lot of ground on.

No, not a chance in hell.

I'm afraid we all know the answer is no..

We should be aiming high however, how high is the question?

Top 4 is high enough and then we could expect 5-6 place.

As someone said below.......

a top notch DM, (Veloso)
a much-better-than-dawson CB, (!!!!!)
a first team attacking midfielder (Arshavin)
and another striker at least as good as Bent (Payelchenko)

Even if we got the above I feel we would only be 5th.

its not impossible as some of you make out and saying we could do it in 3/4/5 years is as hopeful as saying we could win it next year.

we're practically a brand new team, with much more quality than last year, fully fit and psyched up and ready to go. get a good start for once, and why couldnt it happen, one game at a time. its only football, the top 4 arent super human, we're just used to losing to them and the tough away matches up north on a cold night. a new bunch of players with new mentalities will improve us alone. it isnt physically impossible, maybe just psychologically

no chance whatsoever deserves locking. Mabye in a few years time we might have a slight chance but as for this season, there is more chance of Sol Campbell comeing back to the lane to partner leadly King in defence who will also stay fit all season!

I don't think it deserves locking; through the last few pages of discussion some interesting points have been raised.

As for the question at hand, I doubt we'll win the league this year. Infact I'm not at all sure how we'll do. We've got some great players on paper, but it depends how the squad blends.

Luck with injuries and suspensions is also key, as are easy draws in the cups.

I think we've got a small chance. We've paid a top manager top wages and backed him to the hilt in the transfer market. The manager expects big things for the team, The chairman expects big things from the team, so it's only right we do as well. We look as fit as I've seen a Spurs team.If we can add the 2-3 signings that's been well touted who knows. it's exciting times thuogh

It all boils down to the the fitness of Ledley King -especially IMO, Woodgate, Gomes forefilling his ability.

No chance in hell, with the personal we have now, I'd certainly expect us to be top contenders for fifth place. Add Arshavin, and add two quality Dm's maybe Capel and at least one CB, then we have a great chance of fourth place. I don't expect Arsenal or Liverpool to roll over and let us take their CL place though.

Clearly we're not going to win the league unless a miracle happens. However, we're probably not as far away from 4th as people think and then it's only a little more needed to win the league. 4th requires consistency, something that we've lacked. We've bought some good players, but we've always had good players, we need players who'll perform even if they're average. When we're 2-0 down at Stoke, will Dos Santos or Modric bust their asses to get us back in the game? Sometimes that's what you need.

To win the league you pretty much have to be able to take a large share of points off the top 4. If you can get 70 points, then 12 off of the top 4, that's 82 which is near enough what you'll need to win the league.

two seasons time, Ramos still in charge, a world class DM, king and woody staying fit, all our players developing like they should and more vitally staying, a world class finisher up front then yes maybe, but i think its still gonna be a long shot

Personally i think our seasson will depend on how we start the campaign. If we can win say our first 5 matches(in cluding Chelsea away), and not lose any key players for big periods of the seasson then i beleive we COULD have a very very good year.

Hmm, careful there! You're really sticking your neck out...

I'll go further and say if we win our first 5 games and don't lose any of our key players for big periods of the season, then we'll finish top 4!
Sod that, we'll win the league, cup and next European Championships too!

They won't roll over but if they struggle they'll get twitchy because they're skint.

ScumII may be interesting, if scolari has trouble with the prima-donnas or if abramovich gets moody they could be there for the taking...

...but in all seriousness unless we sign a top class DM and either keep Berbatov or sign a GREAT replacement then we will not finish in the top 4, let alone win the league.

We should always aim for the top, even if our chances of reaching it are slim.

We should aim to play better than Man Utd, we should aim to win every game, as it will push us to perform at the top of our game every time. Didnt Bill Nic say that we set our targets so high at Spurs that even Glory is tinged with failure?

Of course if I was Ramos I wouldnt tell anyone outside the team that this is the target.

I am slightly disgusted to hear 'some' of the people, who's reading of the game, I respected come out with a DEFEATIST attitude to our chances this season. Ofcourse we are not going to be favorites to WIN the Title this year....BUT we are 'dark horses' at the VERY least. I would certainly QUESTION any manager who does not set his teams GOAL as winning....forget Top 4 qualification, WINNING the LEAGUE. I fully agree that we badly need a DM, of some standing, but.....who knows what Ramos has decided to do this year?
There is no substitute for hindsight but, as we all know, NOBODY wins a major league with a DEFEATIST attitude....Would the Thief/Scumbag of OT ever contemplate sending one of his teams out with an attitude like some that I have seen here today. I hold a fear that we are, maybe, still an unproven article....BUT there is NO WAY in HELL that Ramos will countenance that type of talk from his squad....
I would consider Top 4 as being a genuine target...and an achievable target, at that. My only doubt lies in our recent history of making a mess from a position of victory....but, I keep telling myself, that was the OLD THFC...of yesterday....I prefer to remember the better days of the 60's,70's + 80's (and a few weeks in the 90's perhaps).
So....my message to the squad is.....ANYTHING is possible as long as you remember that we are no worse than ANY of the other teams in the Top 5 (if they can all keep pace with us lol)....but it will soon be more CLEAR....to all.....COYS!
