Valuations of those players on current market values are:

King (fit one) £20 million
Woodgate (fit one) £20 million
Modric £16million
Bentley £15 million
Bale £15 million
Berbatov £30

We bought Woodgate for £7million, 6 months ago, so I don't know how you can come up that he is worth £20million "fit one" or not.

No club would pay £20million for King either - you are seriously deluded.

£30 for Berbatov sounds about right though...

Presuming Berbs is off and we play roughly 4231, I think that if we fail to get any one of

a top notch DM,
a much-better-than-dawson CB,
a first team attacking midfielder
and another striker at least as good as Bent

Then we have next to no chance because there simply wouldn't be enough quality in our squad, which if you exclude Rocha, Lee, Stalteri, Kaboul, Boateng and Ghaly is down to a very trim 21 players give or take a couple. Jenas would be in our first team. Dawson would be first back up CB. Either Lennon would be one of the AMs or we would be playing Zokora or Huddlestone. There would only be one line leading striker.

However,if, in a best case scenario many think is plausible, our first team ends up looking something like this:

________Gomes
Hutton King Woodgate Bale
_____Modric Veloso
Bently Arshavin Dos Santos
________Villa

Then it really is comparable, simply in terms of quality, to any of the top four.

But...

Clearly we don't have Villa, Veloso or the other reinforcements yet. Many of the players who would be in there are either very young or not premiership proven. We still wouldn't be able to count on our centre backs being fit. Only 6 players - Dawson, O Hara, Zokora, Huddlestone, Jenas, and Bent - have both been here longer than 7 months and played regularly last year. Many are also saying that our team would be too lightweight and defensively vulnerable, but i really don't know whether that's true or not.

Alltogether I reckon that if we don't get in the reinforcements we are hoping for then our squad as it stands is almost absolutely incapable of winning the league. But if our recruitment plans go as planned then the squad would be capable of winning the league, with a lot of luck and very few injuries.

Of course we can win the league.

We wont though.

And even if we did, the win would be slightly tarnished by the fact that every other team was killed in some tragic accident. I would still go to the parade though.

I suppose the thinking is that Woodgate is one of the best defenders in the country. And Ferdinand went to Man Utd for a good £28m a few years ago. And with the current market, especially with English players, a fully fit Woodgate with absolutely no question marks over injury proneness could have easily commanded a £20m transfer fee. He's better than Terry and Terry would likely have been linked with that kind of sum, had a team been linked with him.

Same thinking applies with King too.

No... no we won't win the league, not this year anyway (or next year for the sarcastically accurate amongst us).

Talent - think we have a first eleven 90% there
A togetherness and believe. Mmm, difficult. Historically not found or developed in one season. Yes we've achieved things the last three, but to win the league is a whole new level.
Luck. Especially considering the above we'd need a fair bit.

Top 4 (yes here we go again) though... yep, good chance!
Last season I just didn't buy Arsen*l would be as poor as many were predicting. This coming season however, both them and Liverpool may be lucky to reach 70 points. I think we're good for 70, so could be interesting.

Yes we can.

But...
my biggest concern this year is injuries. We're asking our squad to achieve levels of training and fitness that are pushing them to the limits. Add to that our players with recurring problems, and those that are coming back from long term layoffs, and we have a lot of potential crocks.

Ok say we can. How do you back up that claim? Lets say 85 points to win the league or can you honestly see Spurs losing no more than 5 or 6 games?

If we get a couple of strikers in; Manure loses Ronnie and drink and gambling consumes Rooney; Fat Frank leaves for Italy and Terry suffers a massive concussion; Fibreglass goes to Real Madrid and Keano improves upon his flapping but not his scoring skills, we will sweep the board.

Agree if the above, all happen we just might be in with a squeak. Time for a few more of these.

We wont win the league, unless we win every game, which we wont. Its more than just about the players, its the whole club. Spurs dont have a winning mentality right now, sure we win a few, draw a few and lose sum. Man utd have a winning mentality, maybe even chelsea, and thats what we need b4 we can start looking at challenging for the title.

If we can even give 4th spot and run for its money then ill be happy for now .

Lets not develop delusions of grandure just yet.

CL qualification is a difficult enough target to attain in itself, one that is likely to be beyond our reach this season, if we did finish in the top four that would be a remarkable season.

The fact that only 3 teams have won the league title since Blackburn (and the you'd have to go beyond the premierleagues conception to find another aside them) is testiment to how difficult it is to win the league.

I really hope we dont get too carried away by good results in pre season games, they mean nothing and I would happily lose them all if it meant getting all 3 points up at Middlesbourgh (as in I would trade all pre season games for that)

I just dont want another scenerio where Spurs fans are calling for the bosses head everytime we lose and suggesting we will win the CL after every victory.

We are (hopefully) progressivly getting better and if we get off to a good start we could go on to have a similar season to that we had with Carrick and Davids (only hopefully this time with a better ending) We do have a better squad now (although this is pending the resoultion of Berbatov/replacement situation and not to mention that most teams in the league have also strengthend dramactically)

Im sorry if this post was meant as some joke and my post seems retarded (I have not actually read a single post in this thread) but I feel to express my feelings regarding the mood swings of Spurs fans.

what are the current odds - about 66-1 - I'd say the realistic odds are 200-1

no i can't offer that in virtual cash betting cos I haven't got enough points

But that's the sort of odds I think it is

Basically it ain't gonna happen

I still see 5th as our best realistic position next season

might up it to 4th when I make my proper prediction after the window's closed and we've played a game with our 'new team ' - but I really can't see us getting into the top 2 let alone winning the thing

The top two are in a league of their own at the moment. They have some of the best players in the world playing for them so forget about the title.

But Liverpool and Arsenal are not completely out of our reach but we'd have to have a good season and one of them a bad one as was the case 3 seasons ago.

To me the aim is to get fifth on our own. I don't think the teams in the rest of the league have improved significantly so we need to be finishing 4 or 5 points ahead of them on around 65-70 points to show significant progress.

I think we also have to prioritise the cups. Bagging the Carling again alongside the UEFA would widen the transfer field for us. At the moment players will usually choose Liverpool or Arsenal above us but if we were only one place below them in the league and 'serial' cup winners we might start to look more attractive.

Winning mentality players :

Gomes
Woodgate
King
Modric
Bentley

If they all play in the same team, we'll win. But they won't, so we won't.
