Just watching the dipper game now, if Levy doesn’t provide AC with funds in Jan to buy a top quality CB, then we have absolutely no chance of playing CL football next season. It has been a problem position for several seasons now and taking punts on loan signings and younger players with potential has proven pointless. We need to pay whatever it takes to get in whoever Conte wants whether that be Skriniar / Gvardiol / De Vrij. We are pretty much in a similar situation now as to Liverpool when they signed Van Dijk and Becker. Getting good value signings can no longer be our holy grail in the transfer market.

Since Toby & Jan departed, only Romero has been signed that is of good enough quality and we are still playing Dier, Davies, Sanchez and Tanganga. It needs fucking sorted already.

The fault is with Dier. Mbuemo is on their left flank where Tanganga is picking him up so Toney is Dier’s man but when the ball is kicked forward Dier drops off him instead of challenging for the ball. Because of this Tanganga (naively) comes over to challenge Toney which when he loses out leave Mbuemo free in space and able to pick a pass into the box . If Dier does his job he prevents Toney flicking in and even if he fails Mbuemo is being marked by Tanganga.

1. Son gives the ball away cheaply before this clip starts
2. Tanganga commits, and loses the header, which,
3. Leaves Dier with no choice but to pick up the ball on the outside, which is then crossed, to
4. Where Bissouma left his man open on the far side, who then shoots, which leads to:
5. Hojbjerg's man running free in the middle.

I'd say Dier is the least culpable here, on this particular goal. If Tanganga simply drops off, and Toney wins the header, which he does anyway, then Spurs are still goal-side of the ball and can recover. Son giving the ball away - led to this quick attack, and then Tanganga left the defense exposed going for a header he could not win.

Need two centre backs in January. Absolute priority. No more waiting for your Bastonis or Gvardiols. If an Ndicka or Hincapie is available, then get them in. We can’t afford to wait.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. All your points are valid but if Dier does his job and marks Toney Mbuemo is not given the opportunity to put his cross in.

Yeah Tanganga annoyed me here even in real time, thought he completely commited himself with zero chance of recovery to a ball he was never ever gonna have a chance of winning. Took himself out of the picture naively.

I was wrong. Thought Dav shouldn’t start. Didnt occur to me that Tanganga would be bullied and bloodied by Brentford’s forwards. Despite Dav‘s limitations, he would have been the right player to start, as he wouldn’t have been so easily bullied off the ball.

Was Skippy still sick? If not, he should have come one to match their midfield. As it took PEH about 60 mins to get going.

Sonny is terrible. It has to be said. The difference in ability, commitment, and skill to Deki is night and day. Sonny rarely able to hold on to the ball. Manufacture opportunities. Apply pressure via any type of press. He seems to just saunter around the field.

F*** zonal marking.
Agree. It’s lazy defending. It allows players to escape responsibility. Zones don’t score goals players do so make defenders mark opposition players.
Modern defending is unintuitive.
At corners zonal marking allows attackers to get a run at the ball, no men in the post, everyone back defending leaves no one up pitch for an out ball makes no sense.
It’s no better in open play where CBs don’t actually mark forwards. How many times do you see a ball come into the box and the opposition’s top scorer is in acres of space not necessarily because of good movement from him but just because nobody thought it worthwhile to mark him. Madness.

Nice comeback but so disappointing to have the same shitty pattern of only starting to play when we're already 2 down. I wish playing 3 centre halves had the obvious benefit of making us difficult to score against, but it doesn't.

I wonder what Conte is doing to address this. It's been going on all season, surely he's working on some plan to be much stronger at the start of games, instead of strolling around aimlessly.

If he insists on 3 at the back, he's gotta sort the wingbacks and it remains a mystery why Spence isnt given a go. You can say Conte sees him in training, but he can't be worse than what we've been seeing in his position all year. Wing back is so pivotal to this formation, you may as well go 433 if you're not gonna sort it.

Its tiresome that the conversation turns to transfers all the time. Same perpetual argument that we're just 2 or 3 players away. Or the new variant, 2 or 3 windows away! We need to do better against mid table teams with what we gave, instead of scrambling for comebacks

After taking a month off football and loving life, I was wondering if I'd enjoy it but despite the result, I really enjoyed it to be honest. I took a lot of positives from the game, notably Doherty/Kulusevki but also Kane impressed me in the second half with his fortitude. I don't think there's too many concerns I take from the game knowing we will have Lloris, Romero and Bentancur back real soon.

Will like this because I agree. Once Kane's header went in we took total control of the game. And our ability to come back is impressive.

It's just so frustrating that we can never just take control of a game - just one - before falling behind.

We need to seriously sort out the shite first half displays, its getting ridiculous, we could be putting teams to bed by HT. Wasn't there a rumour a while back that spurs were conserving their energy in first halves until after the world cup lol

Completely agree. Tanganga constantly went to challenge late for headers he had no chance of winning. It was so naive. Don’t worry about the first header, just drop off and pick up the second ball. I lost count of the number of times he needlessly committed himself and left us short.

I thought son looked pretty decent today actually. He was direct, got involved. Took Kulu ages to get into the game at all. Was excellent once he did though.

Tanganga was horribly bad. He has all of the attributes to be a decent defender but he completely lacks the composure.

Terrible today.

You could make an argument that with this being the first game back at a tough away ground without vital players such as Romero, Lloris and Bentancur, it wasn't an easy game to play. Kane looked rusty first half too.

We will have to see how we get on in other games before that theory is proven and we'll know that the preWC performances were not just down to reserving energy.
