anyone know what matches Kaboul will miss? Does the UEFA game count as one?

I think Bassong's main problem is that he doesnt read the game very well, apart from that he is not far off Kaboul, strong quick and can head a ball (although not as good with the ball at his feet)

The problem is he can only improve on this by experience and playing more games, which doesnt look likely to happen with us.

I think Dawson's aerial ability is a bit over-rated personally, I think Bassong and Kaboul are better than him in this respect.

Bassong did well, but he was absolutely horrendous against PAOK.

He is a good player, not quite top class, I'd say he is fifth choice. No doubt his general performance would improve if he was playing regularly, but I think he switches off too easily and has done from the moment I first saw him play for us, and he is slow on the turn. I also think he could be quicker if someone sorted out his sprinting technique.

Ultimately I dont think he has the mental skills to be a 5th choice centre back, coming in from the cold and being expected to perform, and he isnt quite good enough to be a first XI player.

I don't think Cahill is an ideal replacement for him either, I've yet to be convinced he has the mental discipline to fill Bassong's current role, I'd rather get someone cheaper with more experience

I think I agree on the first bit in bold. It takes a certain type of individual to step in and put in a high quality performance when they haven't played in a while. It is also more difficult when the lineup is so different to what we normally put out. If we had played Parker against PAOK giving the defence the same protection they are used to we might have seen a more assured performance from Bassong and Gallas.

I believe Bassong's performances in his first season for us when he was playing almost every game shows he is good enough for us. First choice might be King and Kaboul but I wouldn't have a problem if Bassong found himself starting regularly. It's the only way we are going to see high quality performances from him.

The reality is that we are solid at the back as long as King plays. It can be Ledley plus any one from Kaboul, Bassong,, Gallas or Dawson. When he plays with any of them we look solid but take any 2 from the rest and we don't look convincing at the back. Bassong may have had a good 45 minutes partly because Stoke were on the back foot in the second half but had he played in the first half I doubt whether it would have made any difference. We need another high class defender to replace King because he is our only one. If we have a starting line up where either King or Adebayor doesn't play we do not have options good enough to keep us where we are in the table. If we don't address those 2 issues in January all we can do is pray that those 2 stay fit. Otherwise to be honest I see another 5th place.

I don't. Because obviously it's Bassong & Gallas in the next match if King is out. We're not going to play Modric there are we? We don't have any other options.

you are wrong, i meant for the next match. And I would rather play Bassong and Kaboul more often as they're the future.

Must say if he gets a run of games i prefer to see bassong in our team long term than dawson. I mean i love Dawson but hes very limited, the game is becoming a lot more about pace and i just feel that while 20 years ago dawson would have been a top top defender, he lacks enough pace at the top level on the current climate.

Was it just me or was Bassong excellent in the second half?

Fighting for a future, or is there such a thing?

Any player who has not played consistently will under-perform, and Bassong is no exception.

We should never slag the man off since he has already proven his worth by being an essential part of the team that qualified for the CL two seasons ago.

Sorry, Bassong needs to go. Been at the heart of our defence when we've shipped buckets of goals - Young Boys, Inter, Fulham (and last week against PAOK was awful). Nervous on the ball, distribution poor, lacks bottle, positioning poor. I'd rather have Ramon Vega in the team. Sell in january. I think the club will agree with me.

He has started 7 games this season, 6 of those were in the Europa league when he was getting irregular games, no consistent partner and often no defensive midfielder to cover which has helped King and Kaboul no end since Parker's arrival. Look how vulnerable Kaboul looked in our opening 2 games when there was little midfield protection.

He started 28 of our games when we finished 4th. If he was half as bad as you're making out we wouldn't have got 4th or bothered playing him to begin with.

I understand people thinking he is wrong for us as backup but to say he's worse than Vega is beyond pathetic.
