I’m not saying Lloris wasn’t to blame for their second goal but he was not the reason he was lost. I blame Conte first and foremost for blindly sticking with 3-4-3 against a team who dominant possession after we looked excellent in a 3-5-2 vs Leicester. Then Emerson for stupidly leaving a stud in Martinelli.
We looked excellent against Leicester because they left gaps in behind and the change in system threw them off.

If we'd have started with a 3-5-2 today it wouldn't have been the same and we WERE getting into good spaces and Arsenal were creating very little.

Imagine for a minute Lloris does not make that mistake. Were you concerned? Because I was growing in confidence and it felt like one of those games where we were going to catch them out.

They were not on top as people think. Possession, yes but we were finding the spaces in between the defensive lines well and looked threatening.

Lloris, and then Emerson, completely nulified any chance we had

Arsenal were an entirely different side last season. They’ve moved on, we haven’t
Well it was also the same tactics and set up which got us past Man City and Liverpool without so much of a bloodied nose. It works and people are happy with it. Oh but no as soon as we lose (we were never going the season unbeaten) people start getting all pissy about things.

I don't really enjoy watching our games any more. I enjoy moments in games, but we're not an exciting watch any more. Contes a great manager and I'm sure we'll improve when he can add to the squad, but I very much see this as a transition period for us.
well we had been in "transition period" for the last 10 years...

Didn't really come out for the second half and learn. We've heard a lot about locking down the penalty area and amazing stats and percentages about our defensive work, but defending deep does give up space around the edge and Arsenal were prepared to pepper the goal and had a plan to drag us out of shape and work very decent shooting options from the edge of the box. They got two goals from this ultimately.

There were three key moments though second half, obviously.

1. Big game Hugo arrived, yet again....

2. The red card really made things difficult.

3. But the few mins between red card and then the game sealing 3rd goal were absolutely pathetic from us. How hard was it to get into an organised shape with clear instructions as to who was where, batten down the hatches and readjust and try and get a foothold? Instead we just left the right side vacant, had numerous players just swivelling about wondering what they were meant to be doing, players then arguing with each other as to what they were meant to be doing, pure chaos. It was no surprise the killer goal then came as what remained of our panicked confused chaotic defensive lines just got completely turned inside out. These few mins are on the manager tbh, it needed leadership, direction, instruction, etc, to get through those few mins, readjust, re-equip, hold out, and then go from there. We didn't get it, and the fatal damage was done.

Also has to be said, yet another game, that to sit deep and springboard from there requires effective efficient attacking play. It will always be a struggle with us barbecuing the chances we get. Yet again today, two or three massive opportunities awfully wasted by being able to play ultra simple passes. We don't get that efficiency of the end of last season back then it will always be a bit torturous to watch/win.

We should fucking forget Zaniolo and Bastoni, we still don’t have two top class wingbacks and we won’t be challenging for anything until we do

Don't know who to blame first for that.
Conte's decision not to play Bissouma and give up the midfield again was a huge mistake. We can not sit off against good opposition, and hope they don't do something special. First goal prime example.

Again - Bissouma not being on the pitch isn't the reason Hugo gave them a goal and Emerson got sent off.

The problem with demanding a formation change is that up until those two moments we were in a really good position in the game. As much as I prefer 3 in midfield this game isn't proof its better for us. In fact the opposite

Personally I thought we were incredibly poor for the first 30 mins, better for 20 and started to take control but still suffered from some awful passing then started the second half like we started the first. The moment we let in that second goal we looked completely deflated and lost fight. After the red it was finished.

We lost the game primarily because of two mistakes but Arsenal were the better team for most of the game, excluding 10 v 11, and I don’t think we ever really looked confident or convincing. Overall a poor performance imo but not worth dwelling on. I mentioned a few weeks ago we would continue to blow hot and cold and I’m sure that will continue.

I do think there are some balance issues tho that are aren’t going to get fixed by game time. Royal at RWB, no creativity in our front three when Kulu isn’t fit and 2 Vs 3 in midfield are the main concerns for me.

We’ve been poor on the ball most of the season. Not making the most of counter attack situations that a Conte team thrives on with sloppy play.

It’s even more of a worry to me than the standard brain fart moments ( probably because as deflating as it is I’m just used to us doing that by now).

Never good to lose to them but strangely not overly gutted. Considering we were away from home, thought the first half was relatively well controlled. Yes, periods where we were deep and camped in but never got the feeling it was all last ditch and that we conceded chance after chance and were lucky to go in level. We looked a threat on the counter and as that half went on thought Arsenal were becoming bit more tentative in possession as were worried about our threat.

Definitely an argument that we should have setup with a 3 in midfield (something I wanted before the game) and look to have more control of the ball much more but as far as today goes, not sure that decision cost us the game. Was more down to Individual mistakes that cost you massively in games like this and unfortunately both Lloris and Royal have cost the team today. If we had kept it tight first 20 minutes, really fancied Arsenal to get edgy as signs were there in the first half.

People always say this about Lloris.
yes he does make saves but in big games his kicking always puts us under so much pressure. And he has a howler in him more than every other top keeper
I don’t think these things cancel themselves out.
To be honest if he didn’t make occasional howlers he’d have been snapped up by Barca or Madrid 10 years ago. He’s still a great keeper and has been a massive net positive for us over the years but we do need to look for a replacement soon who can compete with the very best.

Exactly how I feel.

The plan is there, and it works with some small risks.

But if certain players arent firing and you throw up the stupid errors you are always up against it.

But its also why im not worried.

When Conte gets the team right, and players start firing, its like a machine.

It’s not pissy, it was entirely preventable.

Your examples of playing other teams and in other seasons is not as clever as you think it is. You play the team ahead of you, with the right approach for that game. If you stick to the same tactics in all games, well… I dunno what you’re being paid for tbh

Yep. We had a hugely underwhelming transfer window that people massively overrated because of the phantom cash injection and how quickly we did business. Richarlison and Bissouma aside, we look no stronger than last season.

Don't agree.

At HT i thought we looked the much more dangerous team.

What we lacked was composure with that final ball ..we had numerous opportunities to cut the open.

But it was there
