Are you feeling optimistic?

Are you optimistic about Spurs right now?

Does anyone on here actually remember the 1990s?

I’m pretty hazy on a lot of the detail and 1995 has just upped and gone but from what I recall, being a spurs supporter was dire. We were awful, consistently drivel and consistently buying the most underwhelming dross and very occasional maverick star in the flair positions to cover up the fact that we were astonishingly weak. It got so bad that I’d be praying for an ageing and injury ravaged Anderton to play in Central Midfield.

We were always praying that we’d have one lucky season, where despite being crap we’d somehow sneak into the CL or win a cup…

If you look at most of the other threads here you would imagine that nothing has changed. We don’t score enough. We keep selling our best talents. We’re boring to watch. The manager is clueless.

For me, every time I go to the lane or tune in I do so with an expectance that we’re going to win or draw against anyone we play against. I watch an extraordinarily well drilled defence playing, in many cases, well above their natural defensive abilities. I see the most physical options at central midfield anywhere in the prem who can also play. I see a striker brought in at great cost, not to inject flair but to score goals. I see a huge array of attacking flair and talent across the AM 3. The only thing I don’t see is the fluidity that comes from players who know each other and the system well.

I’m starting to see encouraging signs in the way we play but, frankly even if I didn’t I’d still be optimistic. We have time; we’ve been waiting for over 20 years to have a team worth getting genuinely excited about so I for one am going to give this team a little more time and am going to enjoy every tortuous second of watching them develop into that team.

But what about you? Do you remember the 90’s or were you not even born then?

I suspect your last sentence holds true for several on here, and that is why there are so many with such high expectations now. They are not used to seeing dross any more.

I think this is the most solid i have ever seen us defensively and believe it will be a solid base to build on. Optimistic for the future.

Started supporting Spurs in1990, so yeah I remember the dark times well.

For me that's part of the concerns some have right now. We had so many false dawns, then finally looked like we were on the brink of something great. Now some are nervous that having lost King, Modric, VDV, and Bale, in the last two years, along with the dull and fairly negative football we've played too often under AVB, we'll undo all that good work and start slipping away from the top again.

I'm less optimistic than I was at the start of the season, but at least we're still keeping pace.

I don't remember anything after 1991 as I went into a spurs induced coma until 2004 when I was awoken by a large jolly Dutchman bearing footballing gifts.

This is more-or-less what I was going to say.

This season is typically very Spurs like, like the last few have been. All the ingredients are there but just aren't stirring the pot right.

Spurs.

Re-inventing the roller-coaster every few years since 1966 (when I started going).

Been a fan since 1980 and the first game I really remember is the 84 UEFA Cup final. I think we are definitely moving in the right direction. We are not gonna win each game 4 0 so the sooner people realise this, the less their knees will be jerking into their coffee tables.

Anyone who lived through the wilderness of the mid 90's to the mid zeros will know just how good we now are.

I went to Spurs away at Slavia Prague in 2006. I went to that game as I wondered if it would be our last game for a while in Europe as it was a first round qualifier. It was our first foray into Europe for many years. Now we take Europe as granted. Of course we are on the right track.

By the way we won 0-1 in Prague with a Jenas goal but most of the Spurs fans missed the goal as we were too busy watching the Prague girl with the large chest who gave us a running display of her charms during the match - anyone remember that? :)
