I'm guessing most of the forums of similar sized clubs are all being linked with the same players and getting paranoid when the player goes to one of the other clubs. But that's just my theory.

I have the distinct impression that whenever we get 'linked' with a player, then somewhere in the background there's the dreaded Arsenal mentioned too, every time like a fuc*king fart in a space-suit.

I also think it's fairly common knowledge that the big-money clubs like City and Chelsea do actually buy players for no reason other than to stop them going to other clubs who may become rivals. I suppose if I thought about it, I could come up with a few names to support my view, but the only ones which spring to mind immediately are Adam Johnson and Sean Wright-Philips.

I do wonder what formation Chelsea are going to play next year seeing as they seem to be purchasing players who all play in the same sort of position.

They have recently bought Mata, Marin, Hazard and Oscar and already have Sturridge, Kalou and Malouda. On top of that they have been heavily linked with Victor Moses.

Are they planning to play the shortest, positionally bizarre team in the world? The bastards.

only comfort is that Chelsea must have spent most of their dosh now so Spurs should face less competition for any targets they have

Of course you could twist it around and say are Spurs deliberately flushing Chelsea out to overspend on players that we would like but know we wouldn't get and thus force Chelsea's hand into buying them early and overpriced so that we can pursue our real targets with more ease?!

No?

Oh, shame...

I agree with the sentiment that top clubs do buy players purely to prevent them playing a larger and more important role for their opponents. This shows a flaw in the contract wage system. If it was more based on performance and appearances with a lower base salary (or dare I say a capped base salary) then players would think twice about which clubs they join.

E.g.
Base = 25k
Appearance bonus = x per game and Y per 20 games but higher than it usually is today
Other bonuses (team result, golas or cleans sheets etc...)

With more emphasis on all but the base. The base being (more than) enough to sustain the payer should they not be able to play through injury or poor performance.

I guess the issue could be abuse from penny pinching chairmen asking manager to not pick certain players to avoid certain costs, but hey.

Paying someone 150k a week to sit on a bench and play 10 games a season, just to prevent said player joining a rival??

I thought Kalou signed elsewhere and isn't Malouda on the next flight to PSG?...

Kalou got released...

I think the thing to consider here is "Money Talks, Bullshit Walks". Chavs have money to burn and we don't!

The curious case of Duncan Shearer. Bought by Blackburn because they were a bit miffed he was scoring a lot of goals for Swindon while they were trying to get promotion to the Premiership at the start of the Jack Walker Golden era. Played six games and binned. They then got in his namesake Alan.To be fair, as upgrades go...

Are Chelsea buying our targets?
What a laugh.
They are only buying them because we can't afford them.

Of course they're not going for the same players we are as some kind of strategy to piss us off. There's a limited pool of players with sufficient quality to improve teams like our's and Chelsea's so we will usually be targetting the same kind of players. It's a measure of how far we have come in the last few years that these are the kinds of players we now have to go for in order to improve.

Yeah and then we say that we are offering £60,000 a week and they choke on their cornflakes and fall on the floor laughing.

Yep, they're richer than us, and if they offer more money for the same player then they will get him. I think that's the point Stemark... :)
