Madrid and Tottenham open talks on Dani Ceballos

The Real Madrid midfielder, who is surplus to Zinedine Zidane's requirments, has been a persisitent request of Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Real Madrid have opened negotiations with Tottenham, however not to discuss the transfer of Danish striker Christian Eriksen, but rather that of Dani Ceballos.

Eriksen is currently not a priority for Los Blancos, whose main objective is Paul Pogba, followed by young Ajax midfielder Donny Van de Beek. Ceballos, on the other hand, is a major priority for Spurs and has been a persistent request of coach Mauricio Pochettino.

After having returned to Madrid following Spain's U21 European Championship triumph, the 22-year-old midfielder said on Monday that he wants more game time than he had last season.

"I've always said that I have a four-year contract with Madrid, but it's true that I'm happiest playing football,” he explained. “That's when I feel important; it’s on the pitch and playing with confidence when everything is much easier. I want to play 40 games a season and aspire to win.”

Spurs to take Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid

Zidane has already told Ceballos that playing 40 games at Madrid was not going to be easy and has encouraged him to leave. However, the club does not want to sell him and Tottenham are happy to take him on loan.

The Spurs board know the club has the financial muscle to seek his permanent transfer within a year if Madrid still have no space for him, although his price tag would never be less than 60 million euros.

Interesting article - certainly fits in with the loan + option to buy that some on here have mentioned.

The price or the 40 games? A deal of up to £53m is hardly bad if Poch liked him enough in the loan season to want to keep him

With the news about Lo Celso, I actually think we might break our rule about loans. I could see us wanting Ceballos long-term but wanting to spread our big payments out considering we're spending big this summer and next summer will likely be quieter.

Also, unless he's fucking incredible for us Real Madrid aren't going to want him back. They do this loan shit all the time with players like James Rodriguez, Kovacic, Coentrao, Sahin, etc. None of them every end up coming back and playing.

This also makes a lot of sense with the Eriksen negotiations. Madrid don’t want to pay the huge fee Levy wants straight up so we ask Madrid for a lesser fee and they let us loan Ceballos for a year before having to pay the fee at a reasonable number. Boom all parties are happy.

Our massive valuation of Eriksen - which has virtually 0 chance of being met (130m or somewhere near there) makes sense for negotiating a buy option for Ceballos. If Madrid offer 60m Euros, but we value Eriksen at 130, then their quoting of Ceballos for 60m + their offer would come close to our valuation.

That we'd take him on loan. Doesn't even say there'd been an option, just that if we liked him we could negotiate a permanent transfer next summer.

It’s not really us but it seems to pretty popular these days. We’ve had ITK say in the past that as long as there’s an option Poch wouldn’t mind

I'm imagining in my head how quick and sharp our passing is going to be in midfield next season, if we got this lad in as well as Lo Celso the quality and options would be insane.

I wouldn't believe Spanish publications reporting that a loan deal wouldn't include a purchase option (IMO it could be likely they are failing to mention this detail to satisfy their local readers).

I can't imagine Levy taking a player on loan without any options to purchase. Not only is it a perceived club policy but I feel like it is rarely done anymore between clubs of comparable stature. Loans between CL clubs such as Mbappe, Kovacic, Morata, James, Higuain, Hakimi, Costa, Cuadrado, Coman, etc. have all included purchase options for obvious reasons. Of course I'm not denying there are still loans purely for development, but this would be unlikely between two top European clubs.

I think Ceballos on loan would be a lovely purchase as a creative midfielder to rotate with either CE/GLC and would greatly strengthen the depth of our squad this window (while offsetting the cost till next summer). I think signing him and having either CE/GLC on the books is also indicative of us potentially switching to a 4-3-3 or more likely our 4-1-2-1-2 midfield diamond where CE/GLC/Ceballos can play on the left side of midfield.

We've of course had ITK from Val to suggest that should a L (loan) happen, an O (option) to B (buy) would be likely.
Maybe an L with an O to B at the right predetermined price.

It was also commonly reported (or failed to be mentioned) that Kovacic's loan to Chelsea didn't include an option to buy, however with Chelsea having signed him despite their transfer ban, evidently this was false.

If Eriksen were to leave money + Ceballos on loan so we have options ranging from Winks, Sissoko, Ndombele, Ceballos, Lo Celso, Dele, Lucas, Lamela and Son would be fantastic to see. Very doable if we get Lo Celso and push for Ceballos in the Eriksen dealio

The joy of not having to think our game changing options on the bench are Skipp and Janssen.

Is he worth keeping for say 50m for 1 season when he knows he is gone come the end of the year? The guy doesn’t get stuck in much as it is so I can’t see him wanting to if he get a bosman. I say sell him and get locelso and cebellos on loan.

Two words, Fraizer Campbell.
