I don't mind "the Spurs" when it's in that song, my logic being that the "the" comes from the original song lyrics (i.e. Oh when the saints go marching in) but I hate it when people say "the Spurs" in the way like "How did the Spurs play this weekend". Seems t be almost exclusively the yanks who do that though because they think it's The Spurs in the way that it's The Patriots or The Rams etc.
You've never heard anyone shout "Up the Spurs"?
It was in common usage not that long ago, it's not an Americanism.
