When Tottenham agreed to loan Harry Winks to Sampdoria last summer, the hope was for him to play regularly with the Serie A side. The English midfielder wasn’t a part of Antonio Conte’s plans, and therefore needed minutes elsewhere, but an ankle injury killed off his first half of the campaign.

However, after recovering from surgery and returning to the pitch, the Tottenham man has become the big success story of Sampdoria’s poor season, as explained by Samp News 24.

They immediately stated Winks has been ‘the best signing of the season’ for the Italian club, but make it clear his future appears to be far from Genoa. That’s mostly because there’s no option to buy, but also because of the fact they are rock bottom of Serie A, 11 points from safety with just nine games to go.

Glad he's done well, it's kinda sad that Samp won't be able to follow it up and give him a place long-term though. I do wonder where he would be now in terms of development if he'd had that surgery on his ankle earlier.

Hopefully he's built up a bit more confidence and form, and puts himself in the shop window for a good move for himself in the summer.

He did actually have ankle surgery back in 2018, after ongoing ankle issues during his first 1.5 seasons as first team player. I seem to recall talk of him opting against ankle surgery a few years back, but can't find anything on that now - perhaps that was after his further ankle injury two seasons after the 2018 surgery.

Having his recent op (Nov 22) earlier, rather than trying to persevere with less invasive treatment options for 2-3 months, would have allowed him to play for Sampdoria earlier. It may have helped Sampdoria avoid relegation, but it wouldn't have helped his development.

The old Winks, definitely. The one we loaned out, definitely not. The new Winks 🤷‍♂️
Perfect summary.
While I agree he had to go, it really saddens me that became a lightening rod for fan frustration at the end, and that this of the predominant memory for some. Old Winks was incredible.
