When was our last successful transfer window?

I remember the window under Ramos when we signed Modric, Gomes, Giovani, Pavlyuchenko and Bentley. I honestly thought 'fuck me, we are onto a sure thing here'. And I think alot of Spurs and other fans thought the same. But that ended up horrible.

In other windows, we look to have bought well, only for it to go wrong. Keane, Defoe, Palacios and Cudicini arriving at one time looked promising. Crouch Bassong and Kranjcar (1 window?) looked safe and unflattering, but to some degree proved successful with Bassong starring last season and Crouch scoring very important goals in quest for top 4 and in champions league.

In your opinion, when was our last successful window? We are surely due one soon.

Measured on the season that followed or the players that were signed?

If the former, 09/10=4th, big success.

If the latter, 10/11=

Gallas=big success
Van der Vaart=big success
Sandro=big sucess

Measured on whatever you feel is relevant. We have had some dodgy signings, some wonderfuk signings. Some false dawns, alot in fact, and some surprise donkey's doing well.

I am not entirely in the Gallas a success camp. He started awful, came good, then just ok. Good in the box, but caught out of position too many times. If he goes 40 yards from goal to close down a ball, he aint getting back.

King today showed how good a real quality CB can be.

I think Gary Cahill is the next man to do that for us.

Did anyone really think that first window was a success? Losing Berbatov and Keane, and getting Pav and Wellbeck?

In terms of successfully addressing our most pressing needs, then when Ramos fixed our perennially leaky defence with Woodgate, Hutton and Gunter in Jan 08.

The first half of summer 08 looked superb, but then the bombshell of Berbatov and Keane ruined a lot of it; as did missing out on the final pieces, Arshavin and Veloso at the last minute.

Ramos and not Comolli?

I wish we could get some sort of consistency on this board.

I struggle to keep up with who is to blame for each thing.

Both. When a DoF system works well, the manager says what he needs and the DoF finds the players.

We had a proper 4-man transfer committee, serious strategic planning and a whole library of player dossiers back in those days.

You're guessing again Dan.

And we still ended up with David Bentley for £15m. Go figure.

Last summer wasn't exactly a failure. It's not many windows you get to sign two players of the calibre of Gallas and VDV, and if we hadn't we'd have been severely fucked this season, we just didn't address our most glaring weaknesses.

If we'd have just signed a decent striker in January we might, despite the other problems, have had a better second half of the season.

Don't forget Sandro, who may well turn out to be the best buy of the three.

I think technically we'd already signed him the previous window hadn't we ? But I get your point; Gallas, Sandro & VDV isn't a bad trio is it.

I think BC is right, we had announced the signing of Sandro in the January but he stayed with his club until the summer.

Summer '11 is going to be the biggest transfer window we've had. The final pieces of the jigsaw will slot into place.
