Imagine Newcastle fans talking about bottling it, they haven't won a trophy in 60 years.

Jesus wept, Villa and the Geordies have half decent seasons and talk like they are perennial top table merchants.

Berks.
They both have that mentality that they're back where their clubs should be and the last 10-15 years have been aberrations that shouldn't count.

I think a lot of people have forgotten how cocksure Villa fans were that they were going to get that CL spot before us when O'Neill was their manager and they were genuinely in the fight for a couple of seasons.

Yeah i could never stand Villa.

It makes my teeth itch that clubs who have spend portions of the last 10 years not even in the top tier of English football looking down on Spurs after having one half decent season.

i can accept it from the big boys who are more successful but from clubs like these lot? have some self awareness.

60 odd years without a trophy, the gall.

I'm just so confused how fans of teams like Newcastle and Villa have such a disdain for us. So weird.
Grand Old Team
  • Spurs take a wrecking ball to Fulham?
  • They're battering these
  • Thought our Richy had buried that, there. Unlucky, son
  • Richy's crossing game in particular has looked strong tonight.
  • Where can spurs finish?
    Hopefully above RS anyway
  • Missed a trick not luring that former celtic manager to everton
  • Best signing of the summer (Maddison) and worst signing of the summer (Bassey) both on display tonight
  • I love big Ange and the way he tries to play football but his style combined with our players could’ve been an absolute car crash
  • Spurs are so bang average.. they’ll struggle to get top 5
  • Totally disagree. Was never in doubt today as it should be against a side like Fulham. They’ll be top 4 and if they make it to January within shouting distance and bring in a top tier striker that becomes a pretty complete side which will only improve with more continuity
  • Put a top striker into that side ( sadly in place of Richy ) then Spurs will look even better.
However too early to judge if this iteration of Spurs is any less spursy than any of the others that have flattered to deceive
  • They could do a Leicester if they avoid injuries to key players. I'm not sure their squad is good enough otherwise. It's going great though
  • Romero and Van Der Venn look a good pairing at CB. That has stiffened them up imo. Also Kulusevski doesn't muck about and the keeper is an upgrade. They look all right.
looks to see who they are playing next....DOH!
  • Big ange is the man i love him more and more each week
So basically in Liverpool, if you have a semblance of self decency, any social awareness and an iq of over 50 - you support Everton.

Jealousy. We succeeded in breaking the top four cartel when they failed miserably. Plus the general tendency for everyone north of London to hate everything London almost as a matter of principle.

So basically in Liverpool, if you have a semblance of self decency, any social awareness and an iq of over 50 - you support Everton.

With Newcastle and Villa, it's jealousy that we've been relevant this last decade and a half and they've been a mess. Someone they think that we're the ones who think we're above our station.

Newcastle and villa fans seem to be getting bent out of shape over facts.

Howe lost 3 games in his first 9. Emery lost 3 and drew 1. It's not a slight on the fantastic work both manager have done.

As for the Newcastle fan saying we have been given a stadium. The club paid for that, every thing we have achieved is through our own means.

Howe has spent more than Newcastle earn.

Lol! They've been given a load of players who'd have avoided NUFC like the plague if it hadn't been for Saudi money.

Its fine to say this but

Brentford away first game, is a hard place for the majority of teams to go, they weren't in the bottom half then and finished top 10 last season.

Burnley away has historically been a slog fest. Think this fell nicely for us, wouldn't want to be going there in the cold depths of winter.

We absolutely dominated Sheff Utd and Luton and on other days could have won both games by 5. Same with Bournemouth that really should have been more too.

For me its the manner in which we're playing and winning, the league table doesn't really bare any huge significance just yet anyway. We're top, it's great, but it's only 9 games. Let's have a look again when we've played 15 games. We won't be far away from our current position.

Brentford have lost 3 out of 4 home games in the PL this season.

Burnley are shite.

60 years? They won the league cup in 96 and the Champions league in 1981. They've won the league 7 times, the last being in 1980. I'd say they've been more successful in the last 60 years than us if you're counting trophies.

They're a big club that have been in the doldrums for the last 20 years. But they've got a great manager, money and a very good team. I wouldn't dismiss them so out of hand.

European Cup (Champions League) 1 - Aston Villa winners - 1981 - Spurs - 0
English Champions (Premier League) 7 - last time 1980 - Spurs - 2 last time 1961
FA Cup - 7 - Aston Villa - 8, Spurs
League Cup - 5 - Aston Villa - 4, Spurs
Uefa Cup - 0 Aston Villa - 2 Spurs
Cup winners cup - 0, Aston Villa - 1, Spurs
Super Cup winner - 1, Aston Villa - 0, Spurs

Worth pointing out the rest of their league wins were between 1894 and 1910 and their last Fa cup win was in 1957

anyone that started supported them in the late 1800’s is definitely a bandwagon jumping glory supporter though

The keep on using longstaff and Dan burn as an example of not spending, yet ignore isak for 60m, Bruno for 65m.

Eddie howe has spent over 400m in 2.5 seasons.

tbf, I expected it to be a lot more. Putting aside the human rights concerns and just viewing them as "owners" with access to more cash than some small countries, that's not the big-spend I'd expected, that's actually quite frugal considering what it could've been.

Whether or not they got value for money or not, that's not really for me to say, but comparitively when held up against Chelsea and City, and Liverpool, who have spent nearly 900m euros since 2016 (best figure I could find), 400m in 2.5 years is really not that astronomic a number.

I've always seen Spurs, Villa and Everton similar in terms of trophies over history. It's just that this century we've been a lot more successful in league positions. Villa got just above us in our worst form but its been years since they last did so. What you have to consider though in this century the landscape has really changed. Top 4 is so hard to achieve and we've done it multiple times. The trophies are largely dominated by a small number of clubs so league position is measured higher. It just shows how difficult trophies are with these 3 clubs struggling to win anything for so long. Yet for some reason it's largely us who gets mocked for it.

Palace fans on our match this Friday:

  • Didn't realise spurs are playing Monday night, then us on Friday. Seems a little harsh. Bet we don't look 2 days fresher though...
  • Nixon was reporting that Franca would be back for the Newcastle game and that Olise would be back for the Tottenham game. Here’s hoping.
  • Will be the same team that started yesterday. Roy’s a little predictable
  • Roy picks a team based on the opposition and what he sees in matches and in training plus he will discuss it with the management team. It's just lazy to say he's predictable.
  • Depressingly true. I predict a backs to the wall defensive borefest with no attempt to win the game.
he game will start 0-0 and Roy will pick a team that gives us a chance of it ending the same way
  • We always somehow have a habit of looking like the team who has had less rest. Somehow Kane will still score against us.
  • No chance but Son will make it up for him.
  • Most likely another 4-0 defeat!!
  • We are only going to score really from a set piece or wonder goal like Andersons at Man U. If we concede early like against Newcastle its pretty much game over.
  • It would be nice to start with 12 players.
  • Roy annoyingly never wants to take the game to the bigger clubs so expect the usual containment and try to nick a goal. We haven't scored in three of our four home games and chances are we won't again.
  • We've scored 2 goals since 3 September. Will be tough to add to that against a very good Spurs side without Eze and Olise
  • Spurs are very likely to score and this side will not be able to keep possession. It would be a training exercise for them. We have to have players who are capable of hurting Spurs.
  • The fact Spuds are playing tonight and then us on Friday is bonkers. Who came up with that arrangement?!! I'm not sure it'll help us much given their strength this season has been in the wide areas and that has been our weakness. It'll be interesting to see what Roy does to address that.
  • At least Harry Kane can’t score against us, shame they didn’t get rid of Son as well
    crying.gif
Can’t see anything other than a comfortable win for spurs, just hoping it’s not another good hiding like last season, especially coming after the Newcastle battering. I’ll go 0-2 to them
  • I'm going to say 2-1 or 1-0 Palace. Any team that is beaten 4-0 will spend the week in training working on defending so I expect we will be working on the back 6/7 staying tight and not expansive at all. The more the game goes on at a draw, the more Spurs will push forward and they will have to over-commit giving us a chance to catch them on a break. I also think Spurs are due a collapse in the next few games, hopefully against us and not Fulham!
  • Another 0-0
  • I'd take that in a heartbeat.
  • They came to us in 2021 having won their first 3 matches of the season. We beat them 3-0 in what was, I recall, one of our most dominant performances at Selhurst Park in recent seasons. I know it wasn't until added time that Edouard scored goals 2 and 3, but we had been all over them for most of the game. More of the same please.
  • 0-2 Spurs.
  • 0-3 Spurs if we're lucky, could be worse
  • That sounds horribly prescient.
  • Tottenham are playing well, but are not world beaters. Their right back is very impressive with driving raids into the opposition half so we will have to avoid the same mistake as Saturday when Trippier was given full run of the right side. The main creative hub is Maddison and I would be tempted to use Lerma to man mark him and nullify his influence. Their two centre backs and keeper are solid and don't give away much.
I don't think we'll win but will go for a 1-1. I don't think we'll keep a clean sheet as they play very much on the front foot and press high. Ideally you'd want to bypass the midfield but are forwards are not quick and powerful enough up front to play this way.
  • Simple, they score, we lose!
  • I think we'll struggle to cope with their pressing game and will be reduced to playing long balls which will end up back with them.
  • As we know Palace played on Saturday and Spurs played late on Monday night,we have a six day recovery period they have four days, this MUST be an advantage that Roy can manipulate.Palace will be smarting we also have Home advantage which is better than 40,000 Geordies screaming at you. My prediction is a 0-0 draw.
  • I predict that we'll be mullered.
  • My brother said something very similar to me after their game last night. My personal hope is that we do a stereotypical Roy job in stifling them, leading to frustration and perhaps a loss in concentration on their behalf. If by some miracle we can nab a goal from somewhere, there may be hope yet. This is the most optimism I can muster but not in alignment with my expectations.
  • Spurs, very good team and manager, fantastic ground but crap atmosphere. Palace, well we've got one out of four of those - arguably the most important
  • Got to hope that the 80 minutes played by Maddison, Son, Richarlison and the full match for Romero and Kulusevski somehow impacts negatively upon their fitness, preparation time and sharpness for Friday. Realistically it's our only chance
  • We can only dream of a draw in this one. If there is no Olise or Shlupp, we really have nothing to take the pressure off our backs. I predict pain.
  • 1-1 Our new guys and the walking wounded no longer wounded I am hoping that we will shock Spuds and we will get the draw we need for our hearts and mentality.
  • Well we've had two days extra rest than Spurs and they also have a few key injury worries. It depends on the team Roy plays. 2-1 to Spurs.
  • They're still comfortably beating teams that we're struggling to beat. Unfortunately I'm picking a fairly comfortable win for them. They've literally got nothing to worry about on defence, so can focus on their attacking patterns and Son will slaughter us. Hope I'm wrong, but picking 3-1 Spurs. Reckon we'll nick a goal from a corner or something.
  • 3-1 to Spurs if we play like we did against Newcastle. If we have some luck and take the handbrake off 1-1.
