Not sure where else to put this - but it's interesting taking a look at our number of points after 19 games in past PL seasons. Amazingly after the absolute shitshow we saw in the early part of the season under Nuno, we've got our 4th best ever points tally at the half-way stage:

In every other PL season where we've had 35 points or more at the half way stage (as we do now) we've finished top four.
We weren't that bad points wise under Nuno in fairness. The derby defeats and the United loss were painful but we actually won pretty much all the games you'd have expected us to and paved the way for Conte to start with an easy run of fixtures.

I actually do think that we will have something of an advantage from a psychological perspective over Chelsea (and, if they should drop points, Liverpool).

Those clubs fancied themselves as title contenders and will now have to deal with the fact of their league matches being relatively meaningless as compared to the urgency they carried while the title race was still on. It's easy to let your levels drop in those circumstances, all the moreso if you put your focus on a different competition, as they will do so long as they remain alive in the Champions League.

We on the other hand will see the race for fourth not as a disappointing consolation prize, but as something to be striving for. We've got to take advantage of our matches in hand, and probably need an injection of a bit of quality and additional squad depth in order to do so, but we're in a very good position.

Reading this thread, I don't think I can recall a time when Spurs fans expectations/ambitions/hopes were so split up. You read some posts saying top 4 is nailed on after Leicester and we could get 3rd or 2nd place, others saying top 4 will be too hard, and even others saying we'll get 6 or 7.

I think it has to do with the roller coaster of a season we've been having, but mostly with the many games in hand we have, which is source of so much hope but also aren't particularly easy games and we could easily end up with just a few more points out of them if things don't go our way.

Bottom line is the fastest we can get these games rescheduled the better. We need to have a more precise view of where we truly are in this table.

In previous seasons this thread has had many midseason title changes from 'Race for the title' to 'Race for top 4' to 'the league campaign.'

When hovering around the top 4, we always have moments when we have a couple of good results and higher than 4th looks possible, then a few bad results and it all looks hopeless.

The interesting things with this season, for me, is despite Nuno being a poor manager our points tally at him leaving was pretty decent. Then there's the competition for 4th all being a bit crap as well.

Yeah but those title changes happened in the course of time. I was refering to many different views right now as we speak.

The bold part is actually the main reason which makes me hopeful we can actually achieve top 4.

Reason being that the squads are thin beyond the first XI. I'd give us a good chance now even though we've got a lot of tough away games, but if Kane goes down with a serious injury as he did in 2020 or 2019 then I'd instantly put us behind Arsenal, Man Utd and maybe even West Ham. If we lose Kane, Son and Bergwijn as we did in 2020 then we'll come mid-table.

Same risk for a lot of teams I suppose but I feel like we're particularly reliant on Kane and this shit always seems to happen to us.

Will be interesting to see which of our rivals does business this window, real opportunity for us to gain an advantage if we can bring in a few quality faces.

Interesting to see if Arsenal bring in a striker …

My expectation is title - will always be the title until mathematically impossible (even then id lawyer the teams above for points deductions for something) but failing that then expectations is 2nd until mathematically impossible and so on and on

The game tomorrow is huge in terms of confidence we have been ticking along, but a result would really give us something to build on. Then the Man City game coming soon as well, those two games, with big performances I would begin to think we could do top 4.

You keep harping on about this! He is not injured so stop being so "woe is me" negative. If Kane does get a long term injury I know who to blame! :cautious:

That Burnley result is big. With the team we have fielded, today feels like a free hit. Even if we lose, we are 2 behind UTD with 2 in hand, 1 behind West Ham with 3 in hand and level with Arsenal with 1 in hand. We are in the driving seat either way, especially with Son and Romero coming back, any new additions + no Europe (which is a factor for WHU and MUN).

Really wouldn’t be surprised if PL put the NLD mid week in final week of season to make it a top 4 play off

Funnily enough it's still in our hands to finish 3rd above Chelsea.

And 4th is still very much on.

So despite the miserable result yesterday, there's still all to play for.

Yep, so true. We have just come off a run of three away games in a row. The late conversions of 1 point to 3 at Watford and 0 points to 3 at Leicester plus West Ham and Arsenal dropping points have been pivotal to the point that the Chelsea game was a free hit and defeat had no negative effect on our top four challenge. Now we have to get our top players fit, get Adama (and a couple of others) in the building and with two tricky but more than winnable home games v Saints and Wolves to come it is looking very promising for us.
