Vital derby clash for both sides at opposite ends of table

West Ham host Tottenham in a London derby clash, with both sides looking for a vital win at opposite ends of the table.

The Hammers are rock bottom of the Premier League after a dreadful start to the campaign, with just a point from their opening five games.

But Avram Grant's side will take heart from their battling performance in earning their first point at Stoke last Saturday.

They then followed this up with a fine 2-1 win over Sunderland in the Carling Cup in midweek to further boost confidence.

In contrast, Spurs go into this clash on the back of a 4-1 extra-time defeat to arch-rivals Arsenal in the Carling Cup.

Boss Harry Redknapp fielded an under-strength side for the defeat and - with his first-team regulars back - he will be looking for a reaction against the Hammers.

Fifth-placed Spurs already sit seven points off the title pace and will be looking to build on their 3-1 win over Wolves in the league last time.

Redknapp's side will also take confidence from their undefeated start to their travels in the top-flight this term.

Team news

Grant and defender Tal Ben Haim were involved at Sunderland after missing the Stoke clash out of respect for the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur and the centre-back could return to his starting place.

Fellow defender Lars Jacobsen is also back in contention after being cup-tied in midweek, while Herita Ilunga, Winston Reid, Danny Gabbidon and Matthew Upson missed out on Tuesday but are pressing for a start.

Robert Green, Mark Noble and Carlton Cole were dropped from the starting line-up against the Black Cats but should return to maintain their ever-present top-flight records this term.

Striker Benni McCarthy is pushing to play after working hard on his fitness, but midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger (thigh) is set to miss out again.

Fellow midfielder Valon Behrami is being assessed this week after a knock to his right knee against the Potters.

Peter Kurucz, Jack Collison, Zavon Hines and Anthony Edgar are recovering from knee surgery and remain on the long-term injury list.

For Spurs, Jermain Defoe will again be missing with an ankle injury suffered while on England duty earlier this month.

England colleague Michael Dawson is also out with a knee ligament injury, while Claudio Cudicini is set to continue between the posts as Heurelho Gomes recovers from a groin strain.

Defenders Vedran Corluka (back) and Younes Kaboul (hamstring) are both rated as doubtful, while fellow defender Jonathan Woodgate and midfielder Jamie O'Hara are definitely out.

West Ham are bolstered by the return of Matthew Upson, Danny Gabbidon, Herita Ilunga and Winston Reid, who all sat out the League Cup win at Sunderland.

Valon Behrami's knee will be assessed, but Thomas Hitzlsperger is still out.
Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has overcome a foot injury, while Rafael van der Vaart and Vedran Corluka are also fit to play.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Ledley King are doubts with knee problems, and keeper Heurelho Gomes is still sidelined.

West Ham
Doubtful: Behrami (knee)
Injured: Collison, Hines & Kurucz (all knee), Hitzlsperger (thigh)

Tottenham
Doubtful: Assou-Ekotto & King (both knee)

These far-from-friendly London rivals clash at Upton Park after a week in which they experienced vastly different emotions in the League Cup.

The beleaguered Hammers finally showed signs that this season is not necessarily going to be an arduous struggle with a performance against Sunderland that belied their woeful league form. Remarkably, it was the first time they had knocked out a top-flight team in the League Cup since 1997.

You also have to go back quite a way to find the last time they beat Tottenham. That match on the final day of the 2005/06 season still leaves a sour taste in the mouth of Spurs fans, as West Ham's 2-1 win over a Tottenham side suffering badly with gastroenteritis denied them a place in the Champions League.

Tottenham, of course, are now enjoying the fruits of Europe's premier cup competition, but manager Harry Redknapp has had to make some big calls on where his team are going to prioritise this season.

This meant a shadow side were dumped out of the Carling Cup by their bitterest foes Arsenal on Tuesday. There is no chance Redknapp will not take this weekend's game seriously, and after being out-gunned by the Gunners, he is sure to unleash his full firepower on the Hammers.

Head-to-head
• Tottenham have conceded only one goal in their last five Premier League encounters against West Ham.
• West Ham have not beaten Tottenham since a 2-1 victory at Upton Park on the last day of the 2005/06 season.

• The Hammers have kept one clean sheet in their last 17 league games.
• They have scored with just three of their 56 shots, giving them a success rate of only 5%.
• Their opponents have hit West Ham's woodwork eight times so far this season, which is more than any other team.

• Gareth Bale has created 13 chances in five league games this season.

Green is having nightmares in goal still. So we've a real chance to put a few goals past them. Both Crouch and Keane really need to get off the mark in the League.

Hopefully our slip up came against Wigan and we can now start playing to our capability. If we can I think we can demolish them.

STATS THE WAY I LIKE IT (UH-HA, UH-HA)....

Tottenham Hotspur

* Tottenham have scored with less than 10% of their shots this season. By way of contrast, Chelsea's success rate is 27%.
* Roman Pavlyuchenko scored for the first time in 13 Premier League appearances against Wolves on Saturday.
* Gareth Bale has created 13 chances for his teammates in five Premier League games.

West Ham United

* West Ham have scored with just three of their 56 shots, giving them a success rate of 5%.
* Scott Parker has won 18 of the 22 tackles he has attempted this season.
* Carlton Cole completed a poor 46% of his passes at Stoke on Saturday.

Spurs visit Upton Park for the sixth match of the 2010-11 Premier League season in fifth place in the table and unbeaten in all their away matches so far.

It will be the 236th game between the two clubs since the first meeting on 3rd September 1898 in the Thames & Medway League when West Ham went by the name of Thames Ironworks.

West Ham by contrast are in bottom place and have lost all their home matches this season.

Spurs have an excellent record against West Ham in recent times, winning nine and drawing two of the last twelve meetings between the clubs.

Spurs have done the 'double' over West Ham in the last two seasons and have won the last six consecutive matches.

Despite those impressive statistics, I expect West Ham to prove to be very tough opponents on Saturday and Spurs shouldn't make the mistake of underestimating their East London rivals.

Ex-Hammer Jermain Defoe, who has scored in the last three meetings and five in total against West Ham for Spurs is still injured and Spurs have found Premier League goals hard to come by in his absence.

With a bit of luck, Luka Modric will have recovered from his recent injury and will start against West Ham. I'm not sure if Heurelho Gomes is ready yet, so Carlo Cudicini will probably still be in goal.

Here's my guess at Harry's starting XI...

Cudicini

Hutton - Gallas - King - Bale

Huddlestone - Jenas

Lennon - Van der Vaart - Modric

Crouch

I predict that it will be a hard fought match with Spurs just edging it by the odd goal in three.

I reckon VDV will start but Modric will be held back until the FC Twente home game when both will play.

Got a bad feeling.....

For whatever reason I always have a bad feeling about games at west ham and then we always win. I think it's going to be difficult, it is after all their cup final. Just need to attack them from the off, shot at will at green!

Hard to say without knowing the exact team that we will field.. So i will go for a 1-1, or narrow 2-1 win to us.

The last time we lost to the Hammeroids was the infamous Lasagnegate game, which hardly counts. Prior to that it was March 2003, after which there was a mysterious break before we played them again in November 2005. Can anyone explain this?

Now, I haven't done this for ages, but:

25th September 1995

QPR 2 Spurs 3

A poor start to the season had seen Spurs gain only two points from the first four games. Both home games were lost but draws were achieved away from White Hart Lane. However, September brought a turn in form and five straight League and Cup wins. Sheringham was leading the way having scored four in the previous three games and he was on the score sheet again, scoring twice, one penalty. Things didn’t go according to plan early on in this Monday evening televised game. Spurs were a goal down at half-time and found themselves two behind a minute into the second half. The recovery started a minute later when Spurs were awarded a penalty which Sheringham scored. Spurs then gave a display of attacking class and Jason Dozzell equalised after 72 minutes, with Sheringham scoring the winner two minutes later. A concern for Spurs was the injury to Darren ‘Sicknote’ Anderton who had just played four matches after returning from a previous injury. Anderton was to miss almost the complete season but managed to return in time for the final few games and be selected for England in the European Championships.

Jason Dozzell! Woo-hoo!

Put those bad feelings to bed, boys.

West Ham's points total of 42 at the end of 2002-03was the highest amassed by any relegated club during a 38 Premier League game season.

They spent a couple of seasons in the Second Flight before regaining their Premier League status in 2005-06.But you probably knew that anyway.
