After today's match, and another vital Rooney goal me and my housemate were discussing how good Rooney is and it clicked.. Is Wayne Rooney in with a chance to win World Player of the Year this season?

His goal today was his 28th of the season, 19 league goals as well, been scoring regularly in international games also. Surely if he can maintain this form and have a good World Cup he's in with a shout is he not?

Anyone else think he's in with a strong chance?

If Utd have a good run in the Champs League, and then England go on to have a good world cup, then he has a very strong chance of getting that award.

He has been fucking awesome this year, easily the premier leagues best player.

He's the complete player now I think. His heading has come on a lot this year and he has showed he can play up front on his own if he needs to.

If he keeps us his form he should get it.

In a world cup year, isn't the winner invariably one of the players from the winning team?

2006 - Cannavaro (Italy)
2002 - Ronaldo (Brazil)
1998 - Zinedine Zidane (France)
1994 - Romario (Brazil)
1991 - Lothar Matthäus (Germany)

Ah... the 1991 World Cup. One of my favourites! ;-)

But yeah, it usually all hinges on who wins what. If Man Utd win the CL or England the WC, he's got a good chance.

Yeah, unfortunately the first World Player of the year was in 1991. Had it been running in 1990, I'm sure Matthäus would have won it.

Essentially, it's how the players perform on the biggest stages of the Champions' League and World Cup that swings it. Hence why Henry never won it.

He is the complete striker now. His heading ability has greatly improved this season. Can he win the world player of the year? it's possible. But considering he is English, playing in England, i doubt it will happen. Sad i know.

But its' still early in the year. If Messi hits top form towards the end of this season, including the Champions League, then he is the best player in the world. However, Rooney is the best in the world on current form imo.

Rooooooooooooooooney! God i hope he shows this form in the world cup

I reckon we'll be like Portugal used to be with Figo, and pin all our hopes on Rooney.

Not saying anything interesting tbh. Just said Rooney has a chance, which is true because he has been in awesome form.

I don't particularly like the ugly sod but he knows how to kick a football, I'll give him that!

Not sure who else would be a contender for this award. Anyone have any ideas? Messi?

Messi and Ronaldo will be the obviosu favourites. If Real Madrid can find the right position for Kaka in their team, he stands a chance too. Just shows how good La Liga is aswell really.

Ronaldinho has hit top form again aswell. My only problem with him though is that he doesn't perform consistently throughout games. But he'll stand a chance if he keeps producing.

Players like that always stand the best chance of winning it, because they are more pleasing on the eyes. The likes of Drogba and Rooney are world class, but not always the most pleasing to watch. So they will find it hard.
