Chiriches' ball skills undoubtedly improved when he moved to Benfica at just 17 years old, training alongside players like Rui Costa. An injury interrupted his progress in Portugal, however, and the youngster returned to Romania in 2008, moving to International.
When the club was demoted due to financial troubles in 2010, Chiriches switched to Pandurii Targu Jiu, and in January 2012, having made his debut for the national team, signed for Steaua. That's where his career really took off.
Last summer, there was reported interest from Barcelona and Milan, and Steaua's controversial owner Gigi Becali commented that he had no doubt that the player would easily walk into any team in the world.
Then came Romania's disastrous 4-3 defeat to Slovenia in a friendly in August, and those words came back to haunt Chiriches.
"He will never make it to Barcelona if he continues to make mistakes like that," fumed former national coach Anghel Iordanescu, while Gheorghe Hagi claimed: "He commits errors in the area where you just can’t do that."
Such criticism could have been a blow to a young player, but Chiriches proved to be mentally strong and went on to produce his best season to date. Not only did he help Steaua win their first championship title since 2006 in his first season with the club, the cultured centre-back also performed brilliantly in Europa League.

Really does remind me of Kaboul when he joined. The pure athleticism and strength and clear quality on the ball. Just needs to work on his tactical discipline and even then I am sure there will be some hair raising moments! Might just be me but he seems to start the game at left back in this recent match

He played LCB. Steaua's LWB (Latovlevici) is very offensive and most of the time is caught in front and leaves his position open and Chiriches was covering him.

I found the whole match with Vardar Skopje (Macedonia champions) from a couple of weeks, ago for the UCL qualifications, if you want to watch how he plays more clearly. But Steaua breezed trough the match because they were a class or more above Vardar so the adversaries didn't put him to much work.

It'll be done. Probably in instalments, as is the effing norm after all, but even if not, it's not a massive fee so we'll likely be able to rustle it up.

Yonoots - how many members of the Becali family are there? Found this other article with quote from a Victor Becali.
My tablet isn't letting me translate it. Does this give any further info?

His nephews actually own the club now. I think he had to transfer ownership as part of a bankruptcy filing.

Somebody ought to be negotiating the movie rights to this guy's life. His wiki page is great reading.

So, the main figures of Becali familly are: Gigi Becali - Steaua's owner and his 2 cousins Ioan (Giovanni) and his brother Victor Becali which are player's agents, they have a player agency firm (or how it;s called in English). The have under contract the best romanian players, most of them.
On that articles it says:
Victor Becali said that Spurs wanted to pay the 8mil Euros in installments till 2015 but Steaua wanted the whole sum.
"Transfer fee would have been paid by 2015. Steaua wanted all the money at once, but nowhere in this world is paid like that. Del Nido (Sevilla;s president) has paid the whole amount because he knew Gigi and it wasn't a large amount (2,5mil Euros for the Steaua's striker Raul Rusescu). The transaction is not done, because Steaua can say yes, but let's see if Tottenham still want it. We (the players agents, Becali bros) will suffer the most because we know their (Spurs) owner, their coach, but we assum it. "said Victor Becali, at DigiSport.
He also said that the player is affected because the deal wasn't made and he advised him to concentrate on the activity in his actual team and try to surpass this emotional blow.
Ioan Becali said Tuesday that Tottenham made an offer of eight million euros for the transfer of the defender Vlad Chiriches just like Steaua asked, club that will answer to the British team if they accept. End quote

So as far as I can see they didn't gave an official answer to Tottenham yet. Maybe there are still chances.
But Gigi Becali always makes me mad, always ruining things and affecting the moral of the players.
Some years ago, Jose Mourinho came personally to Bucharest to bring Steaua's CB and DM, Mirel Radoi, to Inter Milano for 6 mil Euros (if I remember correctly) and Becali didn't accept that amount. He ruined a lot of good opportunities for Steaua's best players. For Chiriches he refused 3mil Euros form AC Milan (last winter), 4mil from Sampdoria, 5mil from As Roma, and maybe others. He's very choleric, and when he's in stupid mode it's worse. When he's single neuron is mad, you can't reason with him.

we seem to be closing in on him...
not too sure how well he will settle, Romanian language is pretty unique. i don't follow Romanian football so not too sure.

but from utube clips, does look a bit bad ass... strong enough to hold off attacks, likes to play the ball out of the box like verts, and does look to have a decent range of passing. seems to be highly rated.

any one with a link of his mistakes and stuff? can only find the good, not the bad. all defenders will make mistakes now and then, he seems to go in strong with tackle, so i am sure will have given away a few pens.

He spent a season as a youth player at Benfica so it should be safe to assume he speaks some Portuguese. Perhaps he can get Sandro as his English teacher?
