A good deal for both parties. Trippier failed to achieve the high standards expected of a Spurs player and this was clearly felt not to be a temporary thing explained by injury.
Athletico are a great side, Madrid is a lovely place to live, we have some more money to spend and have freed up a squad place.
Generally a bit surprised by it but Poch and Levy know what they are doing. But I do think more than meets the eye. Very "clinical" goodbye message on the Spurs website.
Regarding the fee, it is worth remembering that we got him from Burnley for a bargain £3.5m because he had a release clause in his contract. This could have given him and his agent leverage to insist on a similar clause in his Spurs contract which has not been made public and would explain what we now view as a low fee in today's market. We signed Toby around the same time and back in 2015, his current release clause of £25m was big money for a centre half and £20m would have been top dollar for a full back.
Can only wish him well, he had some very good and important games/contributions for us over the years and was part of a very good side. Like many i wasn't happy with him last season, nor his failure to work out that passing the ball square on the half way line without looking was never a great idea. But all in all a very good servant to the club so a 'Thank You' is very much in order.
Would also add that if Rose does go, and for a similar fee, then that'll be £90m raised for three full backs with a profit of over £80m. If a club needs to raise funds with a sale or two, then absolutely brilliant to be able to sell full backs for that sum rather than a more irreplaceable player further forward like Son, Kane, Dele etc etc
Looking forward to Poch turning another ok ish player into a £50m International full back.
