May sound like an obvious question but have you checked East Coast Trains to Newcastle / Darlington / Northallerton and changing there? Can often work out cheaper

Yup. Tried going via Leeds, York, Sheffield etc. Cheapest option is direct from London to Sunderland. Train companies are just a joke. Bring back the old football trains, although Im too young to remember!

It is extortionate to go up that way I agree, well trains in general are. I go up that way a fair bit from Hertfordshire and alternate between driving and train. If there is a group of us going then its easy to split petrol costs etc and take a turn driving, but its a long boring drive on your own and often hit traffic round Leeds... Sometimes its nice to pay a bit more, sit back and have a few beers on the journey.

Cheapest I've found is for full adult a £60 return. That's if you book in advance onto the 08:11 from King's Cross and return on the 17:29 from Sunderland after the match. If you're under 25 you can look into getting a 16-25 railcard too, which actually puts it into the semi-affordable region of £39.60. This does leave you with about 3 hours in Sunderland before kickoff though, but you can find a pub and watch Arsenal vs Man City on Sky with a pint or two.

Car isnt the problem...long drive is. Id rather pay and have a few cans on the way. Sadly over 25.....
Other option is if you have a friend you're likely to travel to away matches with most of the time. For £30 a year you can get a "Two Together Railcard", which saves you a third of the ticket price (so already £20 each on the return to Sunderland meaning it's actually worthwhile even if you never travel with this person again). But it's only valid if you and the other named person are travelling together.

Apparently you can also get the card at 10% off with the code LONMID10 at checkout which brings it down to £27.

You could get a P&O ferry to france the day before for £1 as a foot passenger and then get the cheapest one back up north? You could probably do it cheaper than £70 and you get a nice boat ride and can buy the beer cheap as chips.

Stowing away is highly underrated these days by the way or you could find a friendly trucker and you'd only have to pay with your body.

Keep an eye on it as I think they release the cheaper advance tickets in waves. With over 9 weeks until the game they can't all have gone already (they only release them 12 weeks in advance).

Blame Daniel Levy for inflated market - that's about the sum he negotiated for Danny Rose to get there and back.
