Fans responding to our question about whether they are better off without Bale:
@johnjohnthe2nd: "Spurs are stronger for it, managed to spread the spending across the park. With Lamela and a LB we'll be almost complete."
@FergieTHFC: "Bale will be missed by all fans not just spurs fans, but teams have survived after great players left before"

1:33 pm
ERIK LAMELA NEWS:
When asked about Lamela at the Spurs press conference, AVB said that there will be "further news in the next few days". He also said that they were looking to strengthen in various positions, which means there could be more signings on the radar.

1:30 pm
It was fairly clear that Gareth Bale was on the way out, but after he flew back from Spain this week, people began to question if the deal was actually on.
Now that it has all been confirmed by AVB, and the deal is in the very late stages and close to being completed, what do you lot think about that as Spurs fans (or even neutrals/fans of rival teams)?
Let us know @mirrorfootball - will you miss him, or do you think your squad this year is stronger than last year because of all the additions?

1:27 pm
AVB has also said that he is not happy with Roy Hodgson for calling up Andros Townsend. Full quotes on that to come, but as predicted, it seems Andre Villas-Boas is letting it all out today, after what has been a difficult week or two.
So Bale's off, Townsend is into the England side but AVB isn't too happy about it.

1:23 pm
And as we mentioned earlier, the confirmation could have something to do with the numerous reports today that Erik Lamela has flown into London for talks with officials at Spurs.
With the squad they now have, Lamela will be a great addition even with Gareth Bale on the way out.

1:21 pm
Boas has confirmed that negotiations with Real Madrid are in advanced stages, but he also said Bale's behaviour has been unacceptable.
Villas-Boas said: "He is involved in a big transfer move to Real Madrid and in the end if it happens, we wish him all the best, but the fact that he hasn't turned up is not the correct behaviour...
"That is the position they chose to take and it's up to the club to decide if it's a fineable offence."
Villas-Boas confirmed that Bale is close to sealing a world-record move to Madrid.
"It could happen very, very soon," the Portuguese said.
It's a pretty sad end to what has been a great relationship between club, player and manager. It seems like Gareth Bale and AVB had a lot of mutual respect, but the tension has obviously got to the both of them.
But this is the confirmation we've been waiting for.

1:16 pm
Here's the news we've all been waiting for, Bale is on the way out:
AVB says that spurs are in the final stages of drafting Bale's contract with Real. "It's a dream move for him."

AVB: "This [transfer] can happen in a different way ... [but] Tottenham will accept most likely the biggest transfer in world football."

1:15 pm
AVB on Bale's absence: "I don’t think its correct behaviour".

1:14 pm
BIG NEWS:
AVB has said that Tottenham will consider fining Gareth Bale after he hasn't showed up at Spurs' training ground for two days in a row.
That means that he at least thinks Bale will be a Spurs player long enough for that to happen. With only five days left to go in the transfer window, that could be a very significant statement.
What do you make of that? Let us know @mirrorfootball

1:12 pm
Some clearing up on the Lamela front, people asking if "in the house" meant he is actually physically sitting in the press conference.
We meant he is in London, talking terms with Spurs.

1:09 pm
MirrorSport understands that Lazio midfielder Hernanes , Valencia's Ever Banega and one other playmaker have been contacted by Spurs with a view to a quick move.
Hernanes has so far refused to sign a new contract in Rome, and while Lazio president Claudio Lotito is reluctant to let his man go, the Brazil international is keen for pastures new.
"Until today no one has knocked on our door for Hernanes," Lotito told Corriere dello Sport. "Getting rid of Hernanes is not our intention; we intend to keep him."
Some more big news for Spurs right now.

1:05 pm
RECAP:
Gareth Bale not turned up for training for last two days
Before that, he was in Granada ready to meet with the Madrid squad after their away match down in the south
Lamela is (reportedly) with Spurs officials today and should be signing on the dotted line for around £30m, we think
That might open the door for Bale to cheese it out of White Hart Lane and hop on a flight to Madrid
Jan Vertonghen has given an interview to members of the press, but he didn't talk about Bale
AVB is up next, but no sign of him, maybe he's stuck in the toilet
Arsenal still haven't signed anyone

1:00 pm
Ignore the last post, the gallery seems to be stubborn and not working.
Still waiting on AVB to say some words, we think because of incoming Erik Lamela that the Spurs coach might open up a bit on the Bale situation.
Perhaps we'll finally get a confirmation.
What do you reckon? There was speculation yesterday that Bale could go to Manchester United. If he had a choice should he go to Man U or Madrid?
Tell us @MirrorFootball NOW, please.

12:56 pm
While we're waiting for SLOWCOACH Villas-Boas to get to the ruddy stage and tell us what time Bale's flight to Madrid is going to be taking off, take a look at this cool gallery that one of our super talented picture researchers put together.
Lets not forgot what he looked like as a young Spurs apprentice. Wouldn't catch him wearing a pink baseball cap back in those days.

*Tweet us @mirrorfootball if you wear a pink baseball cap so that we can mercilessly bully you. (that's a bit harsh!)

12:53 pm
Vertonghen didn't really say anything of interest, nothing about Gareth Bale, all about the game against Dinamo Tbilisisilisliiilisssssiliiibbii tonight.
We want a 10-0 aggregate victory on that one please, Spurs, none of this single goal rubbish like against Swansea.

12:48 pm
Jan Vertonghen has been saying his bit at the press conference, but we're waiting for AVB, the man who will have thousands of journalists around the world scrutinising his every word.
Andy Brassell has given his analysis on what Villas-Boas has done at Spurs over the past year, and he's got it pretty spot on:
"Whatever your opinion on Villas-Boas’ open brand of football, he is putting all his pieces in place – the highlined defence, the central midfielders who bring the ball out into the opposition half, and the wide attackers who can come inside and score goals in the shape of Nacer Chadli and imminent signing Erik Lamela. Now he has everything he wants, the coach must ensure that a Champions League is delivered."

12:39 pm
Pink hat:
Is anyone else a bit alarmed by Gareth Bale's backwards pink baseball cap?
Pink t-shirt - fine, we've all been there mate, you crack on with it.
Pink baseball cap - it's a lot to take in but we can let it go.
Pink t-shirt and pink baseball cap worn backwards - about time you do a David Beckham and take your fashion disasters to Madrid, pal.

12:26 pm
Erik Lamela is in the house, ladies and gents.
And you know what, Spurs fans, this can only be a good thing. Spurs have pretty much sealed the deal on £30m Erik Lamela, and he is seen as a potential replacement for Gareth Bale.
That leaves the door open for Bale to have his wish and go to Madrid, which puts an end to this whole sorry saga and means that Tottenham will have a whopping amount of money back in their bank account. Potentially having time to bring a couple more players into the hold.
This is the start of the end of what has been an intense transfer window!

12:11 pm
If you're Welsh, you might want to check out the Wales squad to face Belgium and Serbia. Looking good.
Take a look here

12:07 pm
Obviously with all this talk of Gareth Bale, Tottenham's clash against Dinamo Tbilisi is in danger of being overlooked slightly.
Considering Spurs are 5-0 up after the first-leg in Georgia, there really won't be too many questions fielded by the press about the fixture.
Instead - expect lots of questions about Gareth Bale, and also questions about Andros Townsend's inclusion in the England squad.
Townsend was congratulated by his team-mate at training this morning, and with half the world calling him the 'young Gareth Bale', he's got a lot of weight on his shoulders.
Remember - the young Gareth Bale was actually a cursed left-back who couldn't get on the winning side for love nor money.

11:50 am
Wales boss Chris Coleman has spoken to Sky Sports News about the Bale situation, he says:
"I think as we see it, it's just like before, until we're told that he's physically unavailable, then he's unavailable.
"It's not easy for Gareth, or Tottenham, but he's very much in our plans."
Not long to go now until this press conference kicks off.
Expect to see: Tension, AVB's beautiful man-beard, lots and lots of members of the press.

11:22 am
Hello Spurs fans, and hello to those who aren't Spurs fans but are curious about Gareth Bale's transfer situation.
The latest update is that Gareth Bale has been named in the Wales squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Belgium.
This is despite the fact that he isn't training for Spurs at the moment.
The match against Belgium is on September 7 and will take place in Wales, that's just five days after the transfer deadline, and it looks like Gareth Bale will be set to move late on in the window.
So will he really want to fly back to Wales just a few days after (potentially) joining Madrid? Seems like an unwanted distraction, especially considering that Wales can't really qualify for the World Cup at this point.
Would they be better off playing a few promising youngsters (even younger than their current crop of talent) with the intention of getting ready for the Euro qualifiers. They've got a good squad there, and the Euros won't be beyond their reach.

So Jan Vertonghen is talking and they talk about Bale's fashion sense instead of giving us his quotes? F****'s sake.

Sounds like Verts could well be captaining the side tomorrow. Kaboul did last weeks presser and captained the team.

Shocking journalism. I can appreciate the attempt at humour, but that's just disrespectful to Spurs and Jan.

This is, without a doubt, the worst piece of Journalism I have seen all summer. It's worse than Marca the way they are covering this conference.
