Tottenham in pole position to sign Thomas Waddingham

Tottenham are leading a host of Premier League clubs in the battle to sign Australian wonderkid Thomas Waddingham.

Waddingham has been in red-hot form in recent weeks, scoring five goals in his last nine games as he continues to impress in his breakout season with A-League side Brisbane Roar.

Very hard to judge whether he is good or just went through a short run of form. Brisbane are such a dull side on the field and chaotic club off it.

He might be good, but equally it might be a case of casting the net a bit wider after players like Irankunda showed there is young talent in the A-League. Not that it's a bad thing. His fee is around $5.5m so it's a worthwhile gamble for Bayern.

Brisbane are 8th out of 12 and have only won 8 of their 26 games. 5 of Waddingham's goals came in successive games but he hasn't scored in the last 5 - of which Brisbane have lost 3. Seems he has been nursing a knock though.

The Australia Cup they mention in the article is part of pre-season. They played 3 top level teams but also 2 lower league teams.

There are plenty of players who looked good or even potentially great when they were 18-20 or so, but played only a handful of times for the first team, before leaving within 2 or 3 seasons and gradually becoming names that are merely footnotes in football's history. I'm talking about football in general, not just our club.
