I didn't know that. I agree it really doesn't seem like something he would recover from. A bit selfish as a fan but I hope he doesn't try and is forced to quite again. Would rather know that we'll see a full match from Sinner.

He's pulled out. Sinner playing Hurkacz tonight.

Good to see Norrie in but a shame that two players have now pulled out. Norrie vs Ruud is a very interesting matchup though, I think both will fancy their chances.

Haven't watched the match yet - it clashed with a football game! - but well done Sascha. Beating Medvedev in 2 sets after finishing a long three setter against Djokovic after midnight is a great effort.

I know fuck sake! Saw a bit at HT and it looked like Zverev was more aggressive and you have do be against Medvedev. He showed he could beat him after their close match in the group stage but to do it in straight sets is fantastic. He has all the belief he needs now to win a grand slam after beating the two best players in the world back to back.

Really can't wait for the Australian Openow, hopefull Thiem and Nadal will be back for that.

Djokovic granted a medical exemption to play at the Aussie Open in the most locked down city in the world. Shocker

Apparently ...
Shortly after Djokovic’s announcement, the Australian Open confirmed he had received a medical exemption and they released a statement outlining the process. Two panels of experts were charged with reviewing the evidence, with the applications finalised by the Independent Medical Exemption Review Panel, a panel of experts appointed by the government. According to a Victoria State spokesman, the personal information of applicants is redacted in the process.

Still sounds dodgy to me.

Would have thought somebody with a history of respiratory issues would be extra cautious around not catching COVID but hey what would I know

Is being a looney anti-vaxxer considered a medical exemption now?

I don't think we're sure what is exactly Nole's stance on vaccines but, come on, not wanting to get the covid vaccine or being against mandatory vaccines isn't the same as being a looney anti-vaxxer. Also, he already is recovered from a covid infection, so he really doesn't need to get vaccinated, at least not for any health reasons, does he?

Anyway, the world gets to enjoy watching its best player and defending champion compete at one of the most important tournaments and the Australian authorities are just outing themselves as big hypocrites. So this is a win win for most of us.

Just because he’s had it before doesn’t mean he can’t get it (or one of the new variants) again…

Deleted the rest as this is the tennis thread and don’t want to de-rail it into yet another uninformed myths of COVID thread :banghead:

I read that one basis for vaccine exemption was having had covid in the previous 6 months; presumably as natural immunity will still be protective. He certainly had it at some point - the partying event in 2020 - but maybe he's caught it again recently. He's not likely to reveal another infection, but maybe that's why he missed the ATP Cup ... ?

The fact you referred to him as Nole, suggests to me you have a potentially biased view of his previous comments and how you interpret them as you are obviously a fan, which is fine by the way, but you should take that into consideration.

Djokovic is obviously a little out there with his 'spiritual world view' and as a fairly influential individual he should be more careful projecting dangerous narratives on the world. I read that he calls telekinesis and telepathy "gifts from this higher order, the source, the god, whatever, that allows us to understand the higher power and higher order in ourselves" and had a previous coach (Pepe Imaz) that taught him about telepathy and levitation and 'extremely long hugs'... OK

His actual comments around the COVID vaccine were; "Personally I am opposed to vaccination and I wouldn't want to be forced by someone to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel". Those first few words are pretty damning despite people saying he's not said he's "anti vax" and his comments relate specifically to the COVID vaccine for travelling. Yeah, it could relate to that, but based on his other opinions on medical things such as surgery etc. I'd suggest not and is his most likely on the balance of probabilities a general view.

His wife also has a few nutty opinions, sharing anti 5G videos at the start linking 5G technology to the outbreak of COVID and when it was debunked, instead of holding her hands up and saying she was wrong, simply doubled down. I get his wife isn't him, but let's face it, people with these opinions tend to be one and the same.

I can only think it's a recent bout of covid, cos if not ...

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Serbian player would be required to present evidence upon arrival that he has a genuine medical exemption from vaccination. The Australian Open begins on 17 January in Melbourne.

"If that evidence is insufficient, then [he'll be on the] next plane home. He won't be treated any different to anyone else. There should be no special rules for Novak Djokovic at all. None whatsoever."

What a shambles!

someone on his staff will be getting it

After the news that Novak Djokovic received an exemption from COVID-19 vaccination requirements to play at the Australian Open, Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said on Wednesday that the world no. 1 men’s player underwent “a completely legitimate application and process”. - Also on Wednesday, Jaala Pulford, acting sports minister for Victoria, the state where the tournament is held, said Djokovic’s exemption may be “frustrating” for the Victorian community but denied that any “special treatment” was given to the tennis star. - But Djokovic has since landed in Melbourne where he remains stuck at passport control after a mix-up with his visa application means he has been denied entry into the country. - A member of his team applied for a sub-class of visa that does not apply to people who have received medical exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccine, according to The Age and The Times.
