Us finishing 3rd, Newcastle 4th, Arsenal 5th, Chelsea 6th + losing Champions league final. (y)

The stuff dreams are made of.

We have the momentum and incentive now for tomorrow. It's huge! Villa are there for the taking!

Wow, I am now so nervous about tomorrow's game. Surely we can't throw it away now. We've had our wobble (and a pretty big one at that) we can now play our way to 6 points in the next 2 games. COYS....and thank you Norwich you actually deserved it today even though I am very biased.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but if we finish 3rd and Chelsea finish 4th or below, do we still have to qualify? I assume that the holders would go automatically into the group stage, thanks

I think they would have to qualify.

That's wrong. 3th in the League and the holders are going directly into the Group stage.

Looks like you're right. I also thought no nation could have four go straight to the GS but that appears wrong.

So you are suggesting that either the league winners or runner up must go through the qualifying stage?? Odd

That's from the PL web site

"The top four teams in the Barclays Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
English winners of the UEFA Champions League finishing outside the top four places (but who qualify for the UEFA Europa League through their domestic Barclays Premier League position) go forward as Winners to the group stage along with domestic champions, runners-up and third place.
No extra domestic place can be gained by winning the UEFA Champions League, therefore the team finishing fourth drops to the UEFA Europa League.
English winners of the UEFA Champions League who do not qualify through their domestic position go forward as Winners to the group stage, with the team finishing fourth dropping to the UEFA Europa League. In this case, the national association of the title-holder is entitled to one additional place in the UEFA Europa League."

Typical spurs would be to bottle it tomorrow. Let's see how much we have changed as a club. It's by no means an easy game and no away games are but the players should be so up for it (However they should have been against Norwich and Qpr!)

I was listening to the game on the radio in a Tesco car park, of all places! At 3-2 I turned it off in a bit of a rage!

Arrived home saw the scoreline and had a real Janince, from Friends, moment,....OH MY GOD....:)

I don't think we'll bottle this tomorrow at all, in a much better place to take advantage of this now.

All 4 through to the group stage? Will that not leave an odd number for the qualifying round?

This result will mean nothing if we don't go out and win tomorrow... I said the Bolton away game was massively important, to or row just became epic!

Win and were looking good again.

Third after all this would be unbelievable...

Come on you spurs! This is our time again!

The highest ranked team from every round below gets kicked up a round. Similar to what happens almost every year when the title winner also qualifies for the group stage in their league.

If Bayern Munich win, or if Chelsea win and finish top three in league
  • The champion of association 13 (Belgium) are promoted from the third qualifying round to the group stage.
  • The champion of association 16 (Switzerland) are promoted from the second qualifying round to the third qualifying round.
  • The champions of associations 48 (Malta) and 49 (Northern Ireland) are promoted from the first qualifying round to the second qualifying round.
If Chelsea win and finish fourth in league
  • The third-placed team of association 6 (Portugal) and the runners-up of association 7 (Russia) are promoted from the third qualifying round to the play-off round.
If Chelsea win and finish outside top four in league
  • Because of the restriction that no association can have more than four teams playing in the Champions League, the fourth-placed team of the 2011–12 Premier League, which would have entered in the 2012–13 Champions League play-off round, will be moved to the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League. In this case, the allocation system for the Champions League will be changed in the same way as above.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves. Just have to win tomorrow. COYS

We can't ask for anything more than for 3rd to be in our own hands, that is the situation we currently have thanks to Norwich today.

Massive two games for us, biggest two games since we played Arsenal and Chelsea back to back and I would argue even more important than both of those and the Man City away game that got us CL football first time.

The reason I say it is more important is that I think we are at a bigger cross road this time, missing out then wouldn't have meant a great deal as we never really expected to. Two years on we have several players who have grown in stature and reputation and would now by looking to leave if we do not have CL football, we have also grown in stature ourselves in that time and would have a more realistic chance of actually signing some players that could kick us on than we did last time (although of course we signed VdV)

Also this time would mean one or both of Arsenal/Chelsea missing out which could have an impact on our standing long term (could be a turning point between us and Arsenal or could stop chelsea having the chance to turn our players heads short term)

MAn City are more established now so they look like being a top four mainstay for years to come, last time it was somewhat unknown. Arsenal and Chelsea were both worse than ever this year and unlikely to be as bad again (Liverpool too are likely to be strong again next year) so you feel that if we do miss out on CL football this year we may not have the chance again anytime soon where as if we do make it we will have the chance to kick on.

coming third could see us retaining MOdric, Bale and adding some real quality to the squad, fourth or fifth could see us missing out.

Third is more important than fourth because we would know our status as soon as the transfer window opened and so would potential signings (further reason why we would be better placed to take advantage of CL football than last time)

Third place would be amazing and these two games are both winnable, if we do what we need to do we will be third and the rest can't sort themselves out and worry about what happens in the CL final.

I still have a lot of reservations that we will add real quality to the squad even if we finish third.

We may not, but we will have a damn site better chance of doing so if we are able to keep our best players and can budget for CL group stage money at the very least from the start of the window.

Plus all potential targets will know we have CL football and there will be no need to wait until the conclusion of the play off game.

Ok there's a good chance that our wage structure could prevent us signing any real big names or many real big names but we only really need to add one or two players of significant talent to the squad to really take us up a notch or two (imagine this team with an outstanding striker or two for example)

ITK (for whatever it's worth) has suggested we have targets lined up pending CL football, it stands to reason that it could be true.

I won't expect us to suddenly be making Man City type signings, but if we have CL football wrapped up as soon as the transfer window opens I think its possible we could add a player or two of the Hazard/Remy level instead of having to sign a Fletcher/Hoilett type and it could make a big difference to where we go from here (especially if CL qualifcation is the difference between keeping Bale, Modric, Adebayor etc)
