Ambition - develop youth while still challenging

Realism - Chelsea, City & United are all able to finance crazy salaries for top tier players so 'should' be untouchable leaving Arsenal our best chance to get top four but...

Bale to Madrid... Madrid sell Ozil to Arsenal
Suarez to Barca... Barca sell Sanchez to Arsenal

They've turned the corner and are now signing a marqué player in each summer window.

Honestly think our best hope is LVG messing things up at Utd

Normally I thoroughly enjoy what BC has to write, Spurger King too, but this time BC definitely went too far in his caustic comments

AMBITION: I would dearly love to see Spurs win the league once more before I kick the bucket however as football has become so business orientated I might just have to buy my season ticket at the Pearly Gates of Heaven

Personally my take is that we should look at the youth team for players to fill a squad role whilst trying to buy players that will improve our first 11 or sign players that our youth team cant provide like a striker

In terms of selling our best players, a good business doesn't strengthen its rival whilst weaken itself. If we cant keep a player we should let him go to someone who isn't going to our rival like a PSG. We have been doing this since the whole Modric saga.

The other thing is, Man Utd imo wont offer us a similar amount to what they will get from RM for de Gea

I've got a mortgage and I can now wipe my arse reasonably well after a number of years struggling to keep it off my hands, can I enter into this discussion?

This clubs ambition is to stay stagnant for the next 5 years until which Dear Leader has this false dream of being able to compete immediately with a new stadium without realizing that's not how it works. While every club continues to improve, we wont be able to improve or keep our better players. The clubs ahead of us will be so far ahead that we'll be stuck at that point. We may be a well run business but we are not a successful business. Its not like the owner doesnt have money either. He does. LOTS of it too. Too much, really. He just doesnt care enough to invest any of it in his club.

Lets hope new owners come in soon, continue the work on the stadium and training ground, continue with the clubs philosophy with the academy, and to invest in the clubs success in the present term as well as the long term.

excellent post. I'm of the same mind. I think our current owners have shown every step of the way that their definition of success is not the same as ours.

Success on the cheap doesn't come easy. When our planets aligned, Bale and Modric came good, and one or two signings of experienced players worked out, we had the chance to put a root down but no.

Our planets may align again. Wouldn't it be great if they did next season, thanks to Levy doing good business by the end of the month.

But even if they do it will be temporary, because they won't invest their riches to sustain our success. FFP still allows leeway for healthy investment in the playing side, but even after the stadium is up this lot will not change their business model. Enjoy the ups, while they last...

I don't believe this is true. The gap between the top 4 and the rest was much larger and seemingly less attainable 10 years ago.
And we closed it. We can do so again once the stadium is built

We need to stop making excuses and give finishing in the top four our very best shot.

We limped through the whole of last season. Did we really give the top four our best effort? Was that the best Poch and his team could offer? Was that really us throwing the kitchen sink away at Burnley busting a gut to make a march on the Champions League places?

Please nobody reply and spout the "but it was a season of transition bullshit" because Man United, Liverpool and Southampton all had similar concerns.

The sooner we stop making excuses the better. If the Europa League is such an issue, fuck it off entirely - play the Youth Team. If people saw an improvement in League form would anyone care? No they wouldn't, and we would probably actually enjoy it more watching our young players being given a realistic chance of making a career for themselves.

Come August, Poch will have his team and famed philosophy and the excuses must simply stop.

If we have a manager talking about Champions League qualification - and we do - then I want to see us make an actual worthwhile attempt at making it.

We allowed last season to be written off completely and as a fan base we let ourselves, eachother, the Club and team down.

I think that's both harsh and unfair. As I said on the condescending version of this thread yesterday, I don't think the new stadium is the golden ticket to on the field success. However, the stadium in itself is hugely ambitious, and would be a great legacy for DL and JL.

If you want to see owners that are happy to stay stagnant look at Kenright and Ashley. DL is at least trying to build something, even if his sheer tight-fistedness is costing us, both in terms of delays to the stadium and performances on the pitch.

Win the Europa League. Get that elusive CL spot, and more importantly, a European Trophy.

This has to be our focus.

People often talk about winning Europa as if it's easy. It's not. In fact, given our recent record I'd say it's considerably harder than finishing 4th.

It's definitely not easy but you can see the chance to win it is there consistently for certain teams like Benfica, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid. We need to make sure we are consistently going deep, and one time we may win it

Agreed, it'll be tough. But it's possible, especially if the club make it a target. It's winning a trophy. We need to start winning them again.

Those teams can all attempt to win that tournament without it impacting on their League form due to the uncompetitive nature of their League's.

Benfica could have a shocking season and not win a trophy yet will still finish 2nd and qualify for the Champions League.
