So, I have just been watching highlights of our FA Cup victory over Forest in 1991. Long time ago now, anyway, I was young and hadn't been supporting Spurs for very long. Living in Northern Ireland, I didn't get to watch Spurs very often, and looking back, I didn't know much about our players at all that took the field that day. I remember Thorstvedt, Mabbutt, Gazza and Lineker all very well and remember thinking that Samways and Edinburgh were rubbish at the time, but I can't remember if they really were or not. So what were your thoughts on these players? What about Paul Allen and Van Den Hauwe for example?

Line up Subs

Thorstvedt Nayim
Edinburgh Walsh
Van Den Hauwe
Sedgley
Howells
Mabbutt
Stewart
Gasgoine
Samways
Lineker
Allen

Hard to compare them to todays players and skill level. Gascoigne and Lineker were a class apart but I always had a soft spot for Mabbutt.

Paul Allen was a fucking ledge! Van Den Hauwe was nails too.

That was a good bloody team back then... FA Cup winners and 3rd in the league. Vinny Samways was a good player for us and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Abiding memories for me:

Gazza being hyper beyond belief and his subsequent suicidal tackle on Charles
Gazza going off injured
The amazing way that the team pulled it together because this really was supposed to have been Gazza's final.
Pearce's goal and a rather dodgy wall (or that's how it seemed at the time as I'm sure one of their players seemed to push and make a gap for the ball to go through).
Paul Allen setting up Paul Stewart for the equaliser
Justin Edinburgh winding up a very young Roy Keane
Venables' man management skills in coming on and geeing up the players during extra time. Cloughie left it to his assistants
Des Walker's own goal.

We came 10th that season. Maybe you are thinking of 1987.

After the semi it was the first game I truly remember watching. I then had the video of the whole game and the entire cup run which I remember watching over and over again.

Off the top of my head we our win away at Blackpool was courtesy of a very scruff goal, we beat Oxford thanks to some magic from Gazza and maybe a Mabbutt goal, we beat Pompey again thanks to one or two amazing goals by Gazza and don't recall Notts County at all.

Good times, criminal we haven't got to a cup final since.

Yes, I know. I got the league finish in 1990 and 1991 mixed up. Old age...

Ok cool, sorry I just have this abiding memory of people always saying our league form went to pot in the run up to the cup final.

The following season we really should have kicked on but got knocked out of the LC qf by CFC and ECWC qf by Feyenoord. Villa knocked us out at home in the FA 3rd round replay after we got more than a decent draw away at them.

I remember thinking that we were going to lose against Notts County but I think Gazza did his magic again albeit I'm sure he had hernia trouble by then.

So what do I remember of that day?

I knew a couple of Forest fans and, before the final, I remember them giving it large and singing 'You'll never beat Des Walker'. They were less than impressed when we pointed out after the game that we didn't need to beat Des when Des was happily knocking them in for us.

I also remember the referee before the game saying that you could tell when a referee had had a good game if you couldn't remember his name afterwards. That would be Roger Milford then, who failed to notice Steve Hodge push our wall out of the way of Stuart Pearce's free kick. Well done, Roger Milford, you bouffant loon.

But, most of all, I remember the confidence of my Dad saying at half-time 'We're 1-0 down, had our best player carried off and missed a pen. Still reckon we'll do it'. Nowadays, we can be 3-0 up in the 89th minute and I'm desperately hoping the fourth official won't show more than 3 minutes injury time.

And a perfectly good goal disallowed.

Crazy to think what would have happened had Gazza not done that stupid tackle. He was still Lazio bound, I think, but I wonder if he would have had all the same problems.
