Phil Ifill, he has to be there. I'm still convinced that he's got everything in his locker to be England right back for years..........

Mark Yeates - Played around the lower two tiers and somewhat of a journeyman after leaving us.

Gardner, I remember that guy who sat behind me screaming at him just to lump forward not dribble whenever he had it as he had the ball control of bambi on ice after a case of Stella Artois...

Thing about Gardner was, he was incredibly quick, I mean athletics sprinter quick, but as soon as you put a ball at his feet it all went to pot.

Gio I really wanted to do well, saw him in a few pre-season games and he was mustard, but he never seemed to impress our managers enough to get game time and settle in

Great thread, we always think younger players are going to be way better than they actually are...many West Ham fans were convinced that in Tomkins, Hines, Stanislas and Collison they had a future team of stars... I remember how we used to get told about this amazing young Arsenal team, with Jeremy Aliadiere and Arturo Lupoli, Henri Lansbury etc The reality is that to make is in the PL at one of the top eight or so clubs, you have to be a pretty exceptional footballer.

I believe Gio was victim of circumstance. Harry kept trying to play him as a genuine winger in a 442 when he had been coached all his life to play as a wide forward in a 433.

Our team was also set up to play to strengths of pace on the wing and balls were played into space for Lennon or Bale to run onto. Again this didn't suit Gio who was used to short passing possession football with the ball played to feet.

He is still a talent but just joined us at the wrong moment in our history.

I think Gio's problem was more that he wasn't very good and liked a drink.
